Game The Most Disliked Klingon Story

I see two really good choices now, but I'll stay on the more honorable route:

TNG Season 2: “A Matter Of Honor”

It's the school exchange program... in spaaaaaaaace!

I loved this story, which also was able to flex some muscles and start doing what would never be allowed on network-first television (TNG was direct-to-syndication). Yes, I refer to the fairly crude comment about Riker's culinary options being told to him after finding out the Ga'gh (not "Gag'h" since that looks like "gag horrendously") should be served live...

We also see a Benzite return, complete with cringing comment from Wesley Wonderboy(tm), and learn that when they deal with problems they have to figure everything out before telling the leadership in command. Picard shows his season 1 soiled briefs in response, since 24th century humans are a lot dumber (:rolleyes::guffaw:) have a different hierarchical structure and that's sorta why Mendon is there. Mendon is to learn from Picard, not vice-versa. Just as RIker is to learn from Cargon, not vice-versa. But if they do, that's of fascination too. (Riker's newly made pals seemed cool too, but I digress...)

At times, the plot is rough around the edges but it's very engaging, which makes up for it (for me, anyway.)

Lastly, being 1988 and all, you know Riker - deep down inside - was thinking "Cargon, take me away!"

"THE SWORD OF KAHLESS" has found its way off this list.

Basically, Klingon RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. And I love it! It's not often we see Klingons on a simple adventure or quest. And it's always a treat to have Kor. One of my favorite things about it is that the sword didn't actually magically make Worf and Kor turn on each other. It just happened due to differing ideas on what to do with it.

A very fun episode.

I dislike most of what Enterprise did with the Klingons, but not "Sleeping Dogs." This episode really works for me, it's a great, tense little piece of storytelling. I guess I always like the episodes that have characters trapped on disabled ships, trying to save themselves... this, "Juggernaut", "Starship Down"...

Oddly enough, given the situation of people needing to stay home, those kind of stories might actually work for the 'STAR TREK episodes thst relate to Covid' thread.

It's either left 'ere, or right 'ere, or

TOS Feature: "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"

The Klingons in this outing almost feel like a rogue group, not necessarily acting under the rules of the High Command. And showing Kirk has a reputation amongst the Empire that isn't all too cozy. (By now, the Organian treaty was long forgotten or the Organians just didn't care anymore or something.) Indeed, unlike the Romulans, the Klingons were well-served in STV.

The movie itself has flaws, notably the crass comedy - which the studio wanted, but the comedy in IV worked because the "fish out of water" trope makes it a natural, if not expected. Comedy within the native timeline is a bit harder to sell without breaking the fourth wall (but not impossible, noticing Tribbles everywhere in TOS and DS9...)

Once the comedy act is over and the movie takes a serious turn, there's a lot of suspense to be had and the movie feels so much more solidly constructed and even engaging; there is still a lot that does work, despite some massive clunkiness in other scenes. If Shatner had free-reign instead of being reined in with a mandate for comedy, V may have been loads better. What we got instead is a curate's egg and mix of suspenseful adventure, action, and an ill-fated attempt to utilize the styles of classic comedies "Airplane!" and "Blazin' Saddles". It just didn't work. Though the beans line by McCoy came closest to feeling natural and not forced.

It's no BOBW, but Redemption, Part One finally allows Worf to reclaim his family honour, putting in motion the conclusion to the arc that started in Sins of the Father. It's also always a pleasure to see Gowron and Kurn again. The episode marks the first appearance of the Duras sisters as well, who were a lot of fun.

I loved the WTF cliffhanger with Sela as well, as well as Worf leaving the Enterprise to take up arms with the Klingons. Will Worf come back to the Enterprise?

It turns out the secret to appreciating TAS was getting locked inside indefinitely. Suddenly the weird 70's slow-but-sometimes-suddenly-fast pace doesn't rankle. Saving "Time Trap", which was one of the TAS eps I liked even before the current sequestration...

More than a couple goodies remain, now that I peeked,

TNG Season 6: “Birthright, Part 2”

Is saved.

While it's not my favorite story because there is at least one unintentional and/or mixed message, I did like Worf teaching of Klingon lore and legend with time-honored practices and I think that was the part of the story that was meant to be the most important, by far. But, as a whole, it could have been a more refined and positive-themed story, or having both parts cover more nuances more completely and evenly instead of Bashir being the O'Brien-wannabe and salivating over Data's dream-covered fluff (which retroactively makes a form of sense later on in DS9 based on a revelation of his character).

Found a cure for the "AFFLICTION".

I'm probably in the minority, but I really enjoyed them writing in the explanation of the Klingon foreheads. The fact that it is a combination of what Bashir AND O'Brien said makes it even better.

I may as well complete the set and save Redemption, Part Two. ;)

With the Klingon civil war in full swing, it's interesting seeing Picard trying to be neutral, despite knowing about the Romulan interference in the proceedings. We get to see more of Sela, and I love seeing Data in charge of the Sutherland, with big fleet of ships creating the tachyon net to catch out the Romulans.

I love seeing Worf giving his best to be among his people - the one thing he has been craving so much whilst he grew up in Starfleet. He just didn't quite do it though.

It's a once in generation opportunity!

TNG Feature: "Star Trek: Generations"

It's nice to see the Duras sisters get some closure, even if there's rough edges in the script and they feel thrown in just as crutches to prop up Soran's half-baked machinations with. Like STV, they're a rogue group, but somehow Klaa seemed a more menacing adversary. As usual, both are well-acted. Gwynyth Walsh had been in Sliders, The War on the Worlds, and other shows of the late-80s through today. Barbara March may have left the industry but still made an impact with a palpable performance.

I saved part 1, so I will bring together the "DIVERGENCE".

For pretty much the same reasons as "AFFLICTION", but an added bonus... the Columbia and Enterprise maneuvering like they did in the beginning. That was really cool.

I'm going to say goodbye to The Vulcan Hello. It introduced us to a new, relatively unexplored era of Star Trek, and more importantly, for the purposes of this thread, to a new age of Klingon society and design. And right off the bat, too. A close-up of T'Kuvma's face, our presumptive antagonist, a speech chronicling his views of the Federation. Fuller and team wisely focused on the Klingons as the lynchpin for this season, and this introductory episode (introductory for so many reasons) helped redefine the classic aliens for our present day.

Woof. Late to the party, and not that much of interest left.

I'll go with Apocalypse Rising. It's not the best Klingon episode DS9 did at all, but it's fine...and seeing Sisko, Odo, and O'Brien as Klingons is funny.

"Rightful Heir" is taken out of the will.

Kevin Conway was a great choice to play Kahless. And it was a good focus on Worf's spiritual beliefs, something we never really dealt with before.

I'm saving Battle at the Binary Stars, the second part of what I thought was a pretty strong pilot, Georgiou was a great captain, the klingons very alien. The more I think about it the Discovery klingons are the only version I actually like (questionable make up choices in season 1 aside).

Birthright, Part One, is quite a good story. I like the parts about Data's dreams, as well as the build-up over whether Mogh had been alive all this time or not. James Cromwell is entertaining as the Yridian that tells Worf about his father.

I just wish that the Data portion of the story had continued into part two. ;)

Could "Ethics" be considered a Klingon story?

Maybe! Definitely too late to add it now, but I'll make a note in my master file to give "Ethics" a rewatch before posting this list next time...

There's still a few here I really like. I'll save "Into The Forest I Go." I remember feeling in this ep that they'd really gotten a handle on their new take on the Klingons, switching to English for the dialogue finally unshackled the actors, everyone was figuring out how to work thru the cumbersome prosthetics... then all the Klingons blew up. :) It was effective!
