HAPPY FIRST CONTACT DAY!

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked. :bolian:

THE RULES: Below is a list of holiday episodes from TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, ST, PIC, and LD. (Everyone except Disco & Prodigy!)
(And below that is a post outlining the parameters for this list in more depth, if you're wondering)

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome, you do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

In previous years this list has prompted some "how are these holiday episodes?" questions, so here is my thinking on the topic for anyone wondering.

Berman Trek regularly produced scary episodes that aired immediately preceding Halloween. I always experienced it as intentional, and VOY started to explicitly advertise it.

"Magicks Of Megas-Tu" is meeting a devil and visiting the Salem Witch Trials, also airing at Halloween. A Christmas sequence is at the core of "Generations", Data performs "A Christmas Carol" in "Devil's Due", "11:59" is very explicitly Christmas & New Years the whole time, "Charlie X" is set on Thanksgiving Day, "Data's Day" is set during Diwali, a key scene in "Blaze Of Glory" is reminiscing about the Thanksgiving dinner they were at a year ago, "Dagger Of The Mind" is filled with flashbacks to the Christmas party, "Once More Onto The Breach" is a story of aging warriors airing on Veterans Day, "Death Wish" is throwing in a Christmas sequence to sell you that years Hallmark Voyager ornament, and "Mortal Coil" is some take on "It's A Wonderful Life" for air in December.

And then there's a huge pile of various Star Trek holidays that we either see created, observed, or substantially discussed in the rest of the eps on this list.

Are some of these episodes set on a holiday in an incidental way? Sure! Are some of these holidays totally made up, even in-universe? Also yes! I find it a fun theme anyway, I enjoy the diversity of ways in which we have encountered holiday celebrations over the years of the franchise, and I hope others agree. Thanks all! :bolian:

For my first pick, I'll go with First Contact. I love it so much = action, drama, tension, humor. The TNG cast were pretty well serviced in this one, and of course, the great James Cromwell, Alfre Woodard and Alice Krige are all wonderful.

Right instead I'll save Once More Unto the Breach. It was a suitably exit for Kor, and a great look at how the warrior race deal with aging.

That’s quite a varied list. A lot to unpack, but at least Someone To Watch Over Me isn’t in there this time.

"First First Contact" is an incredible finale that I have watched about eleventy billion times since it first aired, less than a year ago. There is not an off line in the whole thing. Unbelievably exciting and suspenseful, especially for a cartoon, while also still packing in the humor.

- "First First Contact" would have been my first save too (if I'd got here early enough, that is). So instead, I'll do something I very rarely do and save an episode of TOS: "Catspaw". I'm not really a TOS fan, but I watched "Catspaw" not too long ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's such a shame that Sylvia didn't faintly cry out "I'm melting. Melting! Oh, what a world!" when she was dissolving along with Korob :rommie:

I'm saving "Scientific Method". It's a cool concept, it uses all the main characters and the aliens realise messing with Janeway is a bad idea.

Saving "STARSHIP DOWN". Episodes that feature the entire crew are always a favorite of mine, and this was an awesome episode. It also marked the first time Sisko and Kira truly become friends... and nice touch later when her suggestion becomes permanent.

In recent years, I have discovered the joys of "Who Mourns For Morn?" for the first time. An absolutely hysterical episode.

Though I am a bit appalled they didn't even give the actor billing! For an episode like this, you bump him up to a proper guest star and let his name actually appear on screen, even if he's still not going to have any lines.

I'm saving “Day Of Honor”. B'Elanna is my favourite Voyager character and she gets some good character development here. Neelix was really sweet and it made me realise Neelix and B'Elanna almost never get scenes together. It's a shame that Tom doesn't say 'I love you' back - I think it's the start of their relationship being a bit one-sided. The Delta Flyers podcast about this episode explains how they did the floating in space scene - they built a couple of rigs for the actors to stand on and they could move the rigs, the background and the rigs are black so you can't see them.

Well in light of that teaser trailer for Picard season 3 that just came out, I am right now feeling particularly fond of the first Trek episode I ever saw, which hooked me immediately: "The Game." There's still a lot of great ones to pick. I am torn between saving a Data episode, because I'm sure everyone knows my love of his character by now, and horror... because I love horror.

So why not do both at once? "Phantasms" was a creepy episode, and a great concept, using Data's dreams as the warning AND solution to the story.

And who can forget one of the best Worf's lines ever, with his mouth full.
