Game The Most Disliked Holiday Episode

Sakonna

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Next up in these themed elimination games: Holiday episodes!

The timing felt like it couldn't be better, with Easter coming up this weekend and First Contact Day the weekend we've just passed... :bolian:

LIST PARAMETERS: For anyone wondering about LIST PARAMETERS, putting that in the next post...

THE RULES.
The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below is a list of episodes with some holiday-theming or holiday-celebrating from TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, and ST, plus some movies. Eliminate your FAVORITE or the one you deem the 'BEST.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

In the 2019 Least Disliked games, the winner for this list was "Mortal Coil", VOY Season 4.

Enjoy! :bolian::beer::bolian::biggrin::bolian::borg:

LIST PARAMETERS:

Yes, I'm aware this list is more subjective than some of the others, but I still love the theme anyway. :bolian:

This list is mostly Trek versions of horror tropes or other forms of scary episode that aired at Halloween. With TNG and VOY this happened regularly enough that I always experienced it as intentional, and VOY started to explicitly advertise it.

"Magicks Of Megas-Tu" is meeting a devil and visiting the Salem Witch Trials, also airing at Halloween. A Christmas sequence is at the core of "Generations", "11:59" is very explicitly Christmas & New Years the whole time, "Charlie X" is set on Thanksgiving Day, "Dagger Of The Mind" is filled with flashbacks to the Christmas party, "Once More Onto The Breach" is a story of aging warriors airing on Veterans Day, "Death Wish" is throwing in a Christmas sequence to sell you that years Hallmark Voyager ornament, and "Mortal Coil" is some take on "It's A Wonderful Life" for air in December.

And then there's a huge pile of various Star Trek holidays that we either see created, celebrated, or extensively discussed in the rest of the eps on this list.

Are some of these holiday tie-in's probably coincidental? Sure! Are some of them very small? Also yes! I process them as holiday episodes anyway. I hope there are enough of you that agree (or feel like humoring me) to make a game. :bolian:

Starship Down -- Hamara?

That's a good one, added. Along with "Emissary", since that is what Ha'mara is commemorating. I remembered the holiday being discussed in "Starship Down", but I forgot it was also set ON the day...

I am going to start with a save for "Who Mourns For Morn?" and Lissepian Mothers Day. I currently love this episode more than is reasonable, due to it being a recent discovery. I had never cared for it before, but a few months ago I watched it with my dad and it suddenly clicked, we were both in hysterics. The comic chemistry had never ignited for me before, and it finally did in this viewing. It felt like discovering a whole new DS9 ep.

Saving Firstborn. Not the best Klingon episode, and maybe the festival is a little Renaissance Fair like, but it still tries to give a complete image of a Klingon celebration.

So many good'uns:

CAPTAIN PICARD DAY
TNG, Season 7: "The Pegasus"

There's suspense! Intrigue! Exploration! Riker has a backstory! That feels in-character! :luvlove:

It's also fairly early on in the gaggle of nasty Starfleet peeps we're encouraged to dislike (season 5 brought them in, e.g. the admiral in I Borg). Pressman, et al, are out there but they're part of a complex whole and not THE whole (e.g. what was told to us in "Insurrection", which fell as flat as it was trite by then. Granted, there are shows I'd put above that movie for sure...)

But for a season 7 outing, this episode felt surprisingly fresh and was exciting at the time. Phased cloaks - *squee!* Treaty of Algeron, which was already established in good faith... a shame there was no follow-up to this in DS9 or even VOY (tying into that episode with the EMH mk 2 and cool new prototype ship design hijacked by Romulans, hinting that there were problems afoot already. Then again, no casual viewer is going to watch two or three main shows to get important plot points any more than a casual Star Wars moviegoer is going to look up page #23 of comic #1478 that discusses Force Projection, especially after the expanded universe was decanonized but why aren't I talking about chocolate instead? There needed to be a chocolate holiday, in which case we'd end up with a dozen Troi Sundae episodes... "The Game" had the best bit by far with that amazing fudge spooning scene-- Hmmm, or a "Star Trek goes 4th wall with food" since 7-of-9 had the equally tasty cheesecake episode, Troi's chocolate escapades, Sisko's cooking and/or visiting his dad's restaurant ... Trek and food had a thing going on, every time someone was cooking food it was a fun scene. I gained 10 pounds just by remembering them all...)

And wow,
do I ever babble...

What remains lurking in that asteroid, with meatballs:

I'll disqualify Once More Unto the Breach. It was a fantastic send-off for Kor - and one of the only times that dementia was seriously addressed within Star Trek. It's probably second to only Soldiers of the Empire in providing a deep dive into the Klingon POV.

Oh this is an interesting list.

Gonna take off TOS “Catspaw”. It’s not the best episode but there’s something about the weirdness and atmosphere that I just dig. It’s one of those episodes that just wash over you, the characterisation has spark and wit and...it’s also got one of Trek’s very funniest moments:

“Comment, Mr Spock?”
“Very bad poetry, Captain.”
“...A more useful comment, Mr Spock?!”

The First Contact Day list should include ENT: In a Mirror Darkly part I, which begins with the First Contact gone wrong.

And I'm saving it right away, the actors were obviously having great time chewing the scenery. :D

Thanks! And I completely agree about "Catspaw." The best TOS eps for me these days are ones I can just sink into and let some weird 60's vibe carry me along, and this is truly one of the best examples of that.

The First Contact Day list should include ENT: In a Mirror Darkly part I, which begins with the First Contact gone wrong.

And I'm saving it right away, the actors were obviously having great time chewing the scenery.

Oh, also a good thought! Adding it to the master list for next time.

I will next save "Tears Of The Prophets", as I right now particularly appreciate it's sentiment of still observing the Gratitude Festival, even at a time when there was little to be grateful for...

I also liked it's courage in allowing DS9's penultimate season to end on such a downbeat, defeated note.

I had forgotten about the holiday in "STARSHIP DOWN". It gets saved. One of the best uses of the entire cast in the franchise. Always a rewatch.

Also, anyone else remember this INSANE comic?

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Spirit_in_the_Sky!

There's no topping this in terms of Trek holidays! A race of alien Grinch's are pursuing a Santa-Claus-shaped energy cloud. Wesley is nearly crushed by a Christmas tree on the cover. There's a hideously offensive bickering couple on the crew who are added to the action for some reason. All the alien races just so happen to have a Christmas-like holiday also held on the same day. Geordi and Data's party outfits are THIS close to fetish gear. The whole thing feels like the wildest fanfic ever.

I'll go ahead and save "Schisms."

It's not really a holiday episode in the traditional sense, but I'm a horror fanatic and this episode really scratches that particular itch quite well. There's something deeply unsettling about the concept of alien abduction, in particular the horror inherent in being violated and having no knowledge or awareness of what's been done to you. This episode captures that sense of fear and helplessness very well. I wrote this in another thread a while back, but it reminds me a lot of Fire in the Sky, a movie notorious for its disturbing alien abduction sequence.

The perfect episode for Halloweentime viewing.

This one always gets me turned on:

TNG, Season 5: "The Game"

I never met a chocolate I didn't like.

And the rest of the story is pretty fun too.

Merging a NIntendo Gameboy with Google Glasses led to some hilarious results. Actually, recalling those days when looking out the window of my parents' horse and buggy, I never really saw people affixed to their portable Atari Lynx consoles as they are to smartphones so this episode sadly hasn't merely withstood the test of time (smartphone games being as variation on a theme) or is a time capsule but predicted new technologies (the Glasses) as well. And not because the Lynx was a flop next to the Sega Game Gear. Of course, they needed more than just "disc in kinky cup" (how'd they get everyone moaning past the censors I will never know) to really sell the game that much more but the episode would start to get weighted down.

Always loved how the aliens looked like buttheads... And if Riker kept to her joysticks instead of becoming all 4-eyes, there'd be no episode. Just "Star Trek TNG - Commander Riker aka The Family Guy".

"Scientific Method" Though marred by a random technobabble-y ending, it's a nicely creepy installment. Seven saving the ship would go on to become such a routine occurrence, but this episode gets good mileage out of the FIRST time, when she's still a little distrusted by the crew.

Of all the things involving mint frosting...

TNG, Season 7: "Phantasms"

Yep. I was going to dive into Charlie X's big turkey (a great story, that one) but it's already taken. So I'll have to get at some of that yummy mint frosting.

The whole episode is a foray into warped metaphor, pardon the pun. Some of which were double entendres, some of which worked better than others but if Will doesn't object I wouldn't mind joining in with the good Doctor... or would she be the one to mind?

The pandimensional microbe critters make an interesting twist in explaining pretty much everything going on.

That and this episode was planned with Unlimited Data in mind. But as everyone already knows that meme, you might not know who was calling him:

"Mortal Coil" is super satisfying to me. I think I might only love three Neelix episodes, and this is one (also "Jetrel" and "Homestead").

First Contact was easily the best of the TNG movies, with a thrilling plot, emotionally-resonant themes, and tons of good character bits. (Two words: drunk Troi. Two more: "Assimilate this!") James Cromwell was perfect as a flawed and very human Zefram Cochrane; Andre Woodard's Lily Sloane was a powerful foil to Picard, and Alice Krige was at once creepy and sexy as the Borg Queen. And I mean, you really couldn't have a better story for First Contact Day than the actual First Contact!
