Game The Most Disliked Ferengi Episode

Sakonna

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Next up in these themed elimination games: Ferengi episodes!

THE RULES
. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below is a list of Ferengi episodes from TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. Eliminate your FAVORITE or the one you deem the 'BEST.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

In the 2019 Least Disliked games, the winner was "Family Business", DS9 Season 3 (which I was very surprised by!).

Finally, a big thanks to @Farscape One for helping to put this list together!

Enjoy!

I will kick it off with a save for "The House Of Quark." This was the best way to serve "Ferengi episode", as a combo with "Klingon episode." That scene where Quark is attempting to walk the High Council thru the intricacies of a complex financial fraud never fails to make me crack up.

I wanted to save DS9 season 6 episode, "Who mourns for Morn" but it's not on the list . So I'lll just copy the list above, assuming it was there and I now deleted it :)

Great comedic episode in which Quark has to juggle between his own greed and those of (criminal) other parties. Initially he hopes to profit from the entire situation but it quickly escalates in a roller coaster ride, out of his control (much like in House of Quark).

(Or was it intentionally left out ? In that case I'll have to pick another)

Intentionally left off. I left off anything that struck me as a solo or two-hander Quark episode ("Who Mourns For Morn?", "Rivals", "Looking For Par'Mach In All The Wrong Places", "Profit & Loss", "The Ascent"). If it's a Quark showpiece, he had to be involved with other Ferengi in order for it qualify for the list. :bolian: Left off Ferengi B-stories as well.

OK, since my previous post is null and void, I'll eliminate "Body parts".

Quark finds himself in an impossible bind because he feels obliged to honor a contract that would require his dead body (literally), which is exploited by his nemesis Brunt.

Great quotes:
<after finding out he doesn't have Dorek Syndrome after all>
It means I get to sue Doctor Orpax for malpractice! ........and I'm going to live.

Garak (whom Quark asked to kill him): For a man who wants to kill himself, you're strangely determined to live.

<When he realises he isn't dead but dreaming:>
QUARK: I'm asleep. That explains why this place looks so tacky. I mean, The Divine Treasury? Please.
GINT: Don't blame me for your limited imagination.
<a little later, when Brunt shows up in his dream>
QUARK: What are you doing here? This is a private vision.

VOY Season 3: “False Profits”
VOY Season 7: "Inside Man"

Can't believe “Little Green Men” isn't saved yet. Easily one of the best “Ferengi episodes”. A clever way to take the ol' Area 51/Roswell conspiracy theory and make it into an hilarious sci-fi comedy. My favorite moment is when the Earthlings assume Quark must be the mother of the three Ferengi.

TNG Season 1: “The Battle”

Wouldn't "Move Along Home" count because the story is essentially a moral tale for Quark? But that is a secondary plot, I am seeing the difference now between that. That and I can't help but to plug that story because it's (IMHO) underrated. If not imperfect. But I don't want to start a battle, so on with the show:

TNG Season 1: “The Battle”

Picard gets a good character development backstory, and I'm a sucker for this type of trope. It's a decent use of the Ferengi as something other than comedy fodder too. Plus, we see (albeit shallowly) how the same person can be a hero in the flip side of one context but a devil in the other side of the same context. Then again, if the Ferengi started the whole thing... but again, I use "shallowly" because this could have been a season arc in of itself and the viewer can make all sorts of funky fresh fancanon going any way they like, which is where the fun truly begins. As for something as big as arcs, arcs can still be ultimately shallow just for the sake of preferential belief in a narrative; real research takes time but after a while you still need willing volunteers consenting within the ethical system that no analogue or simulation can predict.

What remains, am moving along now:
TNG Season 3: “The Price”
TNG Season 3: “Captain’s Holiday”
TNG Season 3: “Menage A Troi”
TNG Season 5: “The Perfect Mate”
TNG Season 6: “Rascals”
TNG Season 6: “Suspicions”

DS9 Season 7: “The Emperor’s New Cloak”
DS9 Season 7: “The Dogs Of War”
VOY Season 3: “False Profits”
VOY Season 7: "Inside Man"
ENT Season 1: “Acquisition”

Every time DS9 went back to the Ferengi-feminism arc, it was notably worse than the time before, but the beginning was not bad. I really enjoyed Pel and "Rules Of Acquistion." I wish they'd found a way to keep her as a running character while they developed the Ferenginar story, she would have provided a nice counterpoint to Ishka, and a stronger foil to Quark's misogyny.

TNG Season 3: “The Price”
TNG Season 3: “Captain’s Holiday”
TNG Season 3: “Menage A Troi”
TNG Season 5: “The Perfect Mate”
TNG Season 6: “Rascals”

Ishka - portrayed by Cecilia Adams, as I recall. Daughter of comedian and actor Don Adams, she had an untimely demise and died before he had. :(

Cecily Adams, yes. She played Ishka every episode after Andrea Martin did it the first time.

(She was also the wife of Jim Beaver, aka Bobby Singer on SUPERNATURAL, who also played one of the Starfleet officers in the medlab with Klaang on Earth in "BROKEN BOW".)

The "BAR ASSOCIATION" is closed from this list.

It was a good growth episode for Rom, who really needed to get out of his brother's shadow. The B plot with Worf was handled well, too... I still laugh every time I think of them in the holding cell.

Why don't more people realize three times is not the charm?

TNG Season 3: “Menage A Troi”

While the comedic element wasn't my thing, it's arguably needed a a counterbalance for the sense of threat from the Ferengi biologists to Lwaxana and Deanna did become eerie and grizzly as they were to be murdered as guinea pigs to help the Ferengi learn the genetic link allowing telepathy.

Business as Usual is one of my favourite episode for Quark. I love the seriousness of the mess he gets himself into with his new business associates, but also that he puts things right - in his own way.

TNG Season 3: “The Price”
TNG Season 3: “Captain’s Holiday”
TNG Season 3: “Menage A Troi”
TNG Season 5: “The Perfect Mate”
TNG Season 6: “Rascals”

DS9 Season 7: “The Dogs Of War”
VOY Season 3: “False Profits”
VOY Season 7: "Inside Man"
ENT Season 1: “Acquisition”

Eliminating VOY Season 3: “False Profits”. One of those lightweight eps that's good for a laugh, and doesn't take itself too seriously.

TNG Season 3: “The Price”
TNG Season 3: “Captain’s Holiday”
TNG Season 3: “Menage A Troi”
TNG Season 5: “The Perfect Mate”
TNG Season 6: “Rascals”

DS9 Season 3: “Prophet Motive”
DS9 Season 3: “Family Business
DS9 Season 5: “Ferengi Love Songs”
DS9 Season 6: “Profit & Lace”
DS9 Season 7: “The Emperor’s New Cloak”
DS9 Season 7: “The Dogs Of War”
VOY Season 7: "Inside Man"
ENT Season 1: “Acquisition”

I suspect I'm choosing the wrong one to save.

TNG Season 6: “Rascals”

Some of the story is hokey (whether they be Human or Ferengi) but the notion of reliving childhood and the Guinan/Ro interaction makes up for every nitpick and then some. The kids do a decent job acting too! And, go figure, the Miles/Keiko relationship becomes sufficiently disturbing as a result and becomes a pattern for them on DS9.

What's left, albeit with incertitude:

TNG Season 3: “The Price”
TNG Season 3: “Captain’s Holiday”
TNG Season 5: “The Perfect Mate”
TNG Season 6: “Suspicions”
TNG Season 7: “Bloodlines”
DS9 Season 1: “The Nagus”
DS9 Season 3: “Prophet Motive”
DS9 Season 3: “Family Business
DS9 Season 5: “Ferengi Love Songs”
DS9 Season 6: “Profit & Lace”
DS9 Season 7: “The Emperor’s New Cloak”
DS9 Season 7: “The Dogs Of War”
VOY Season 7: "Inside Man"
ENT Season 1: “Acquisition”

Yes! Pel was a great character and it's a missed opportunity they never brought her back.

My next pick to save is going to be “Family Business”, because it introduces many cool things from the show: Brunt and Kasidy Yates have their first appearance and it's the first time we're visiting Ferenginar.

TNG Season 3: “The Price”
TNG Season 3: “Captain’s Holiday”
TNG Season 5: “The Perfect Mate”
TNG Season 6: “Suspicions”
TNG Season 7: “Bloodlines”
DS9 Season 1: “The Nagus”
DS9 Season 3: “Prophet Motive”
DS9 Season 5: “Ferengi Love Songs”
DS9 Season 6: “Profit & Lace”
DS9 Season 7: “The Emperor’s New Cloak”
DS9 Season 7: “The Dogs Of War”
VOY Season 7: "Inside Man"
ENT Season 1: “Acquisition”

Captain’s Holiday is one of the more fun TNG eps. I wish they’d use Vash again.

TNG Season 3: “The Price”
TNG Season 5: “The Perfect Mate”
TNG Season 6: “Suspicions”
TNG Season 7: “Bloodlines”
DS9 Season 1: “The Nagus”
DS9 Season 3: “Prophet Motive”
