Game The Most Disliked Episode Written By Ronald D. Moore

Removing Take Me Out To The Holosuite.

Trek has never been great with comedy episodes. But for us to believe that not only a Vulcan is hell bent on proving human inferiority, but he considers baseball the way to prove this, is completely absurd. And all of the humor just missed, to the point of being insulting to the audience's intelligence.

It's like if you took a children's sports movie and made all the characters adults.

Removing Doctor Bashir, I Presume. Understandably, the change in Bashir's backstory is hard for some to swallow. Personally, I think it sorts its self out by season 6. The episode is an interesting examination of children and the expectation of parents, how what domineering parents can damage their children by setting their life paths for them. And holy f! That was the only acting credit ever for the woman who played Bashir's mother! Lots of anger, lots of heartbreak, lots of soul searching. Oh, and there was Nog and Leeta.

"The Search, Part I" was a super-exciting season opener.

The Defiant was a great addition. I remember being so annoyed when it was first teased that DS9 would be getting their own ship -- I thought it would be a stupid accommodation to fans who couldn't stop moaning about how Trek HAD to be on ships, which would undermine the awesome station-centric storytelling that I was into. Obviously my fears were unfounded, and now when I catch reruns from the first two seasons and see all the ridiculous things they had to do by runabout, I see why the Defiant was essential!

The writing in that scene with Quark's Karemma contact is particularly fun.

I was going to save "Relics" next for those very reasons. (I think Brannon Braga was offered to write the episode, but passed to Moore due to him being a huge TOS fan.)

"Thine Own Self" is taken off this list.

A very underrated episode, it's the best example of why Data is a heroic person. Despite losing his memory, all he does is try to help a village.

And the Troi subplot is great, too. (I always found it amusing that a throwaway line from the previous episode, "Lower Decks", had Riker make her a Commander and him a Captain while they were going over performance reviews. It was all in jest, but I found it amusing considering what happens the very next episode.)

I think in my first post I forgot we were removing the best and not the worst. Oh well, somebody else would have gotten that one. :)

A lovable little filler piece,

DS9 Season 6: "The Sound of Her Voice" (teleplay)

I wish Lisa had survived. (I did a more in-depth reasoning/review in the previous thread where I saved the story from temporal hell.)

I've often felt that "Strange Bedfellows" is one of those final-arc highpoints that no one ever really praises (except me, repeatedly :bolian:). You don't realize it at the time, but the final scene of the series between Kira and Winn is here, and that scene is one of the series highpoints for me. I put it with "root beer!" and all the other famously great DS9 moments.

I think in my first post I forgot we were removing the best and not the worst.

I wondered that when I read it, but I thought "maybe this is like one of my so-bad-it's-good eliminations?" where it is the outrageous quality of the terribleness that makes me LOVE it. :bolian:

Tapestry is a wonderful episode, and I think I've saved it more than once now in other contests.

It's still good seeing Picard become more appreciative of his past. Q is a hoot as well.

Of the few remaining, I think I'll save Paradise Lost from DS9 Season 4. It wouldn't be a Star Trek series without some sort of fringe Starfleet conspiracy, and it was nice to see the Sisko family interact together. Also, Sisko is rarely put in the position of interacting with mainstream Starfleet, and this was a good indicator of how isolated he is from the "meta." Any generic Starfleet officer would never be able to pull off what he did. So this episode shows that there's more than subject-matter expertise in play... Sisko himself has taken on a larger-than-life air of authority, much like Picard.

How was "Chain of Command, part I" still there? Ok, it's not the culmination, there aren't 4 lights yet, but it deserves to be removed for the setup and suspense alone!

Jeez, this is STILL a really strong list.

I have a great time with "Disaster." I always like this kind of episode ("Civil Defense", "Starship Down"). Very straight-up space adventure, and they make it fun by sectioning the characters off into interesting groupings.

It wouldn't be a Star Trek series without some sort of fringe Starfleet conspiracy

"Barge of the Dead" has been on this list long enough! While I didn't care for how the ending equivocated on whether B'Elanna's experience was real or not -- IMO, when you build an episode around this kind of concept, you should have the guts to commit, dammit! -- I liked how this episode not only built on Klingon mythology, but also told us so very much about the relationship between B'Elanna and her mother. After this ep, I could believe that B'Elanna would name her daughter after Grandma Miral.

It really is!

Maybe I should've saved this one earlier, it's stronger than I remembered: Redemption, part II. The "Data in command" scenes warrant saving it alone, the Worf part is icing on the cake.

Pulling "Star Trek Generations". Yes, it was a bit of a disappointment when compared to overall expectations. But, it still had Kirk and Picard meeting, a great crash sequence, and some TNG philosophizing about the meaning of mortality.

Saving Life Support. What can you do with a wooden actor? Turn him into a piece of wood. Perhaps the best Bareil episode in terms of performance, and it manages to generate sympathy for an otherwise unliked character. Winn also developed more dimensions than a simply power-hungry woman.

The Darkness and the Light was very effective at building a mystery, as Kira is desperately trying to find who is responsible for the deaths of her friends from her former resistance group. They even went to the trouble of bringing back Lupaza and Furel, and they had quite a shocking death.

I feel the paranoia in the episode peters out towards the end, but I do love it overall, and Nana Visitor is game as always.

"The Bonding" was sold to TNG as a spec script, and was, in fact, the script that got Ronald D. Moore hired as a writer on TNG. Which means that it's this not-especially-distinguished (but still a bit touching) episode that led to the creation of every other item in this round. I vote that's a good enough reason to save it.
