[Bad Thoughts]

Saving Once More Unto the Breach. This is an amazing meditation on the meaning of heroism and a fitting sendoff to one of sci-fi's more memorable actors. Too much poetry in one episode

I can't let "All Good Things" linger here any longer. This is like a textbook case of How To Do A Series Finale Correctly, you could teach it in Series Finale school -- they just nail it.

Particularly impressive is how they pick up the badly done story of "Encounter At Farpoint", except now they do it well, while also maintaining perfect continuity. Neat trick.

[Brennyren]

I loved "Family." Being largely episodic, TNG so rarely did direct follow-up to the events of a given episode, this ep being an exception. And exceptional it was, with riveting performances from Patrick Stewart and Jeremy Kemp as the brothers/rivals who proved they didn't necessarily have to like each other to love each other. Theodore Bikel and Georgia Brown brought love and laughter as Worf's adoptive parents. ("I have all the schematics at home!" Of course you do, Sergey....) Really, the only weak link was the Jack Crusher video, which wasn't particularly interesting or convincing. Otherwise, this was a brilliant character-oriented episode.

There are and were so many episodes in this list which i not only find worthy saving from elimination. Some i like very much. And many of them serve very different goals.

For example what does "House of quark" (DS9, season 3) contribute to the mainarc? I want to save this episode because its broadening Quarks character and because it backes up DS9 season 5 "Looking for par'March in all the wrong places", which i also find a quite entertaining episode.

For me Quark is one of the most interesting and entertaining characters in all of Startrtek i know. "House of Quark" shows that Quark ist not a setup for other characters or storys (like keiko for example?). You can see, how writers and the production team are carefully developing a character which they obisously like and to this point already know very well. Great episode Very Fun moments and maybe the best "Quark story" in DS9 (which would be fun to discuss, actually )

I love House of Quark too. The sight of Quark helping the Klingons with finances is priceless.

I'm not going to cloak my feelings about this one:

TNG Season 5: "The Next Phase" (written)​

It's great to see Romulans properly conniving, and this time getting it a new point of view. A lot of shows and series let the viewer know in advance who the baddies are, but this episode adds the hurdle of de-phasing to be able to warn everybody in time, allowing for some great suspense - suspense never really lets up.

The waxing philosophical discussion of afterlife and funerary processes is highly engaging. Better than waning philosophical!

Even the incidental music is a home run, out of nowhere, after half a season of the new "the frog farting symphony" that was crass back then and hasn't dated well. So when a score from the season 5-7 era stands out, you bet it's going to get sopping with praise. (Each story deserved its own flavor and not be reduced to off-the-shelf cues in the way that diluted a surprising amount of TOS.)

Why wouldn't Geordi try to hit on Ro? They're already acting wonderfully like a married couple in this one...

Of course, the one character out in all this is Picard - who looks like a fool. First there was the Romulan spy from the "Data's Day" and now this. But Picard is human too, and not a Marty Stu. You know this would never happen in TOS, where Kirk would figure it out all by himself in 2 minutes and then nag the computer into self-destruct mode, regardless of whatever Spock or the rest of the crew were doing to assist.

I love House of Quark too. The sight of Quark helping the Klingons with finances is priceless.

Quark and Garak are my wife's two favorite characters on DS9. Shecsaid Quark was the real hero of the series. Not that I am disagreeing with her, but I half-joked saying, "Why not write a thesis on him."

I am kind of waiting for it, to be honest.

 

[Farscape One]

I would not be able to forgive myself if I didn't save a Data episode. Which is why "Data's Day" is my next save.

A wonderful 'day in the life' episode, it's perfect to have Data be the one to tell the tale because he is the ONLY person who can BE awake and alert for a full day.

We meet Keiko, who marries Miles. (When I was a kid watching this, I thought she was a bit shrill. But as I got older, I understood more the love and affection both have for each other. Fully got it once I got married.) They ended up being probably the most realistic portrayal of a married couple in scifi. Definitely in the franchise.

And the most important reason for the save? It's Data. And it's his day. So that makes it MY day, too.

[Brennyren]

"For the Cause" gave the to-that-point underused Eddington a pretty interesting arc (not to mention a famous -- or infamous -- speech), made Kasidy into something more and other than Sisko's love interest, and put Sisko himself into an unusual and difficult situation. Throw in (Moore did!) a well-paced, suspenseful plot, and you've got a winning cause.

"THE DIE IS CAST" is my next save. Great end to the two-parter, it was a game changer. The Tal Shiar were hurt badly, but the Obsidian Order was decimated, leaving the Cardassian government to go where it ended up. And it was awesome seeing the Defiant blow up some Jem'Hadar ships.

Great dialogue overall, but especially Odo and Garak.

The ending's a bit rough, but Sisko piling it on Dax and Worf over ritual suicide fluff more than makes up for it, reminding us of the sheer complexities of being commander of such a huge station - on top of everything else going on with the breakdown between the Federation and Klingon Empire. The story is about duty at its core, and not just Worf's or Kurn's, though Worf is still the most heavily hit... and has to be for the scope of the narrative.

Also, is Tony Todd not one of 90s Trek's best character actors?

I've always enjoyed watching this story, due to its tension and use of "Icarus vs Daedalus" peacocking theme. And the tragedy of the ending actually hits a homer since one is really hoping the kids would do this (unlike the Diamond Slot formation, which was ego on steroids AND meth. And math...)

Most acting is great.

Great incidental music as I recall...

In good ol' Trek fashion, the story's setup is contrived - like a red shirt newbie in a serious away mission ("Friday's Child"), but this one tries to obfuscate and is somewhat successful. Not completely; all the senior officers snuff it so the cadets are given command.

That said, what's really cool is that the commander (also doing drugs to compensate, shhh) is not going all "Lord of the Flies" (or even listening to Fad Gadget, the king of the flies!) but taking it seriously - which helps make the tragedy that much more palpable.

And Jake the Reporter also made for an engaging subplot, along with Nog's... there is a lot of meat in this story and who doesn't like meat? (Without meat, pew pew is just empty calories.)

Always a go-to episode. Even despite the silly cringey chant of "Red Squad, Red Squad, Red Kangs' The Best!"

Oh, and speaking of Fad and his music (and people think Devo had lyrics with multiple meanings?!),
