To me, the best Trek movie, with a perfect balance of action, pathos, humour (some good, some less good - drunk Deanna falls in the latter category) and suspense.

This is an EXCEPTIONALLY strong list. Honestly half of them are loved enough by me that they could all be my first save.

I think I'll go with "In The Cards", because it's a particularly audacious writing structure in this one. Balancing those two stories and those two tones, the fluffy fun caper woven into the dark specter of looming war and death, could not have been easy.

This may be the best script for Winn of the entire series.

It does have that hideous "Lions and Gigers and bears" line, but nothing's perfect.

I think it's a quite beautiful episode, and one that ends with a moving conclusion I often like to revisit in depressing times. I adore the writing of that final voiceover...

SISKO: "Captain's log, stardate 50929.4. Two days ago, this station felt like a tomb. I'd never seen so many of my crew depressed at the same time. But for some reason, it now seems as though a new spirit has swept through the station, as if someone had opened a door and let a gust of fresh air blow through a musty old house. Why this is happening, frankly, is a mystery to me. After all, nothing has really changed. The Dominion is still a threat, the Cardassians are still threatening to take the station, and I can still see the clouds of war gathering on the horizon. So why do I sense a new-found optimism in the air? But maybe I'm over-thinking this. Maybe the real explanation is as simple as something my father taught me a long time ago. Even in the darkest moments, you can always find something that'll make you smile."

[Seven of Five]

I genuinely don't know where to start.

Yesterday's Enterprise has it all, though, and is my favourite episode of TNG. It's such an epic story, spanning two Enterprises, and Picard deciding whether to trust Guinan's advice or not.

The use of Yar here was well done as well. When she learns of her timid death in the original timeline, it fires her up to go and help the Ent-C crew to fulfil their mission.

The attention to detail in the episode is great as well, as we get to see all the little differences between the two timelines.

Stewart, Goldberg and Crosby were awesome.

So many to want to save, and a few that deserve a tie game...

TNG Season 3: "Yesterday's Enterprise" (teleplay with Hans Beimler, Richard Manning, and Ira Steven Behr)​

It's a tight little drama involving a parallel timeline, loaded with so much greatness - by peeps who all went on to DS9 and it shows (and only in good ways!)

Yes, a little cornball season one liners still do exist- but they don't detract as much as they could (e.g. "This is not a ship of war, this is a ship of peace" and the even more and equally inintentionally amusing moment where Castillo wants Yar to call him "Richard" because his mother did... which, for all you fans of Jay Sherman and Jeremy Hawke out there, you know I'd be putting up a very disturbing clip of "The Critic", if only I could find it... On edit, I found a time index if nothing else: So if you do find the full episode of the episode "Miserable" (S01/E02), the fun begins at time index ~10:17...))

While the romance subplot is iffy, the rest more than compensates for it. And it's great to see Yar back! But while her reasoning to leave has Picard's undies in a knot, how much foreshadowing was put in for the creation of Sela? Because this is genuinely brilliant stuff.

The original 1701-C design was even better than what we got due to budget constraints, but by the time this episode was made they still weren't sure if the show would take off despite the best polished and tight scripts and production made to that point. (That's also why TOS movie outfits were cannibalized.)

It's one of TNG's finest episodes for sure.

Ah yes, much like the ill-fated 1967 movie "Casino Royale". Such a gallimaufry of incompatible styles, it boggles the mind to this day how it got even made (or a cult following, but I'll concede the Woody Allen segments were hysterically silly, as well as the bit with Valentine Dyall's voiceover as leader of SMERSH)...

But in TNG's case, for this episode anyway, having a gaggle of writers did coalesced their input into something far greater than the sum its parts, and with much style and verve. And much like with Yar, who else wants to see Castillo's aged 20 years on?

 

[Bad Thoughts]

Saving Rocks and Shoals. A very depressing, yet insightful episode. The suicide of Vedek Yassim is one of the most gut wrenching scenes in the entire franchise. It puts up some interesting moral questions. Interesting reparte between numerous characters, especially Nog and Garak. Special performance from Nana Visitor.

This is an EXCEPTIONALLY strong list. Honestly half of them are loved enough by me that they could all be my first save.

Sadly, some of Ron Moore's best writing efforts aren't even represented, like "In the Pale Moonlight."

 

[Farscape One]

When you want to prove that Ronald D. Moore is a very talented writer, show this list. He's more than just 'the Klingon guy' (he got that reputation because he wrote so many Klingon episodes), and further shows why BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (2003) was so good. That could very well have failed if someone else brought it back.

This is truly a hard list to decide, because so much is awesome. My first save will be... "OUR MAN BASHIR".

I don't think it's a surprise by anyone who has seen me in these games with this episode on the list. (And I have the suspicion many of you likely left it here on purpose for me to save it first. And I thank you for that. )

An undersung gem in the pantheon of TNG:

Mirasta Yale is an outcast of her own people, who Picard and crew take in - in an episode that's action-packed but still has that TNG approach at the same time, it was engaging from start to finish.

Big bonus: The episode has a near meta moment about never judging a society based on the content of its entertainment.

Bigger bonus: Carolyn Seymour nails it out of the park and reminds that she's great at playing goodies as well as baddies.

I'll switch series to mix it up a little, and save Tacking Into The Wind.

Moore comes full circle by having Worf kill Gowron, and also there's the fun scene with Ezri taking the Klingon Empire down a peg.

We also have Damar killing his friend Rusot, in the name of new Cardassia. And if that wasn't enough, Bashir and O'Brien discover Section 31's involvement in the creation of the shapeshifter disease.

Probably the best episode in the Final Chapter.

"The Defector" was a brilliant script, layers on layers and twists within twists. James Sloyan is formidable, yet easy to empathize with, as Jarok, and Picard is just The Man. It's Only a Paper Moon always brings a tear to my eye. It's a testament to James Darren and the late Aron Eisenberg that the producers thought they could handle having an episode to themselves in such a way.

It's hard seeing poor Nog trying to get used to life again after losing his leg, and how he struggles to speak to his friends and family about what he went through.

What an impressive body of work! Ron Moore should take a bow, talented writer! I think the strongest episodes here and generally the DS9 ones...not sure whether that’s because his writing got sharper or because DS9 is my favourite of the two shows.

Gonna save DS9’s “Trials and Tribbleations”. It’s just an utterly delightful episode from beginning to end, and perhaps the greatest anniversary show I’ve ever seen. It’s hilariously funny, joyously reverent while also quite tongue in cheek, and so marvellously executed, from the performances to the extraordinary visual effects. I smile just thinking about this ep. Ron’s love for TOS shines through.

"Trials And Tribble-ations!" Another one that must have been SOOOOOOOO hard to pull off, but it comes together so beautifully. Now, THIS is how you do a valentine to the fans (if only Braga and Berman had been taking notes for TATV...)

So instead I'll save... hmm.... "Rejoined"! Beautiful episode. Trek's best ROTW. At least Berman Trek managed to do queer issues well ONCE -- better than nothing!

It also does a really good job of laying in the Trill exposition in a natural way, so that a newer viewer would have some idea what the hell was going on here.

This is truly a hard list to decide, because so much is awesome. My first save will be... "OUR MAN BASHIR".

I don't think it's a surprise by anyone who has seen me in these games with this episode on the list. (And I have the suspicion many of you likely left it here on purpose for me to save it first. And I thank you for that. )

I almost saved it first just to have a chance too! BUT I could not do that, as it was not actually my favorite remaining at that time, and I must protect the integrity of the game.
