The Most Disliked Episode of TNG, Season 7 - 2025 Edition...

Frightscape One

Admiral
Admiral
Welcome to our bi-yearly 'Most Disliked Episode' games! Now that the 'Least Disliked Episode' games hosted by BlueStuff (who inspired me to create these games, so thank you very much for paving the way) have concluded, we can begin the opposite side of that coin.

Here's the game. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. I'll provide a list of the episodes for each season and you need to eliminate your most favorite or the one you deem the 'best.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed. Finally, leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you feel they would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win. Pretty simple. Enjoy!

TNG season 7 had the worst issue a series could have... burnout. Overall, I find this to be a less successful season than any season, including season 1. However, there are multiple gems that make the rest of the season worth it.

And I'm going to start with the finale, "All Good Things...".

This was a brilliant way to conclude TNG. The perfect finale for the series. I'm sure I don't have to go into any more details.

I'd feel ghostly if "Descent pt 2" was at the top of my list. Thankfully it's not.

"Phantasms"

A surreal and creative outing, and Freudisms galore, what's not to like?

The Maquis in Star Trek are often portrayed sympathetically (even the name comes from Second World War "good guys"). The episodes in which they appear tend to show moral problems and are not clear-cut. That Ro, herself from a planet occupied and brutalised by the Cardassians, should be attracted to the ideals of the Maquis, is not a huge stretch of the imagination. There's an interesting juxtaposition between her father-figures, Picard (who showed faith in her after her problems in Star Fleet) and Macias. Her choice of which one to betray is a real dilemma - Ro could have gone either way and it would have still felt "right". Removing "Preemptive Strike"

The beginnings of a potential directorial career that sadly never went anywhere,

"Genesis"

proved Gates McFadden really had a knack for direction, also elevating an iffy script considerably. Honestly, roll with the premise, it's really Worf it... /badPun

Great closeup. Plus, her scream when Worf spits acid on her is genuinely chilling.

I forgot, season 7 had something approaching "incidental music" instead of some frogs farting on a log in a bog and making sog(gy). Long overdue...

BURRRRRRRRRRRRRP!! :guffaw:

Also, when tying in video clips of the episode, autofill decided, for "Beverly", to add on "Hillbillies". That's still a popular show, apparently...

One of my favorites of the series, this was a great acting showcase for Brent Spiner. A fantastic mythology story, with a dark mood and a creepy atmosphere.

And a rare occasion where we get to see Picard's archaeology knowledge come in handy.

I have defended this episode and "MOVE ALONG HOME" probably more than any other in the franchise, and I will ALWAYS continue to do so.

NINJA'D!

Season 7 really goes where TOS might have gone before,

"Masks"

definitely feels like a homage to TOS while doing something different with a new angle.

This episode requires Brent Spiner to carry the weirdness that would be worthy of the 60s original show, and he pulls it off with aplomb. Some love it, others hate it, I like it and found it oddly easy to roll with.

It's one of the better Geordi stories,

"Interface"

is surprisingly watchable. Plus, it's got the wonderfulness of Madge Sinclair and a charming twist to the aliens-of-the-week involved.

"Sub Rosa"! I've talked so much about everything I love about this episode over the years, I don't know what more I can say. A favorite!

Can't wait for the "Sub Rosa" Beverly action figure that's coming.

Okay this has gotten a little bit tougher quicker than most other seasons not that there are an abundance of bad episodes in season 7 per se just a lot of pretty forgettable ones.

I'm going to save Firstborn, a decent enough episode. Left a few dangling threads but at least STO picked them up and then for some reason them having Alexander's destiny to die as K'mtar saving Worf anyway irked Michael Dorn to the point he refused to work on the game again.

This episode gives is the 'why' of Lwaxana. Losing her first daughter explains so much of her. And the sequence in the mind was nice and creepy.

Whlie not perfect,

"Gambit, Part II"
as with part one, did feel like an attempt to expand TNG late in the day. it doesn't quite work, but it doesn't quite fail either (Apart from cheezy incidental muzak and a 50w light bulb passing as an analyzing beam). Definitely watchable...

The baddie is not played by Brian Doyle-Murray, either.

There's still quite a few I like here. I find "Thine Own Self" such a charming episode. It's very "regular" but also perfectly executed. Both stories are quite satisfying

Also nice that we get essentially no Picard because Patrick Stewart was off doing a play, providing space for the rest of the cast to shine.

May as well save the second half of Descent. It's fine enough.

Beat me to it. It's almost the worst of this season, but the worser ones got saved and it's all subjective. Descent pt 2 was just a slogfest, with poor music, poor acting, contrived scenes, nonsensical capers... as part one didn't even need Lore, part two only shows how much worse things got by revolving the story around him, along with his pointless experiments that didn't align with the Borg and the Borg never collectively figured it out. Even that subplot of the Borg thinking Lore was sincere had nothing substantial under it. Even "Liaisons" is better, even if it is a retread of numerous ideas told in TNG (and TOS) before.

Still, this one's not the worst of the season... but it didn't leave much positivity as a season premiere at the time.
