I really liked this write-up the Hollywood Reporter did a few years ago, the 100 greatest episodes from the first 6 series (this was pre-Discovery).

And it occurred to me that simply playing the full list would make a great elimination game. The selection of episodes communicates such an interesting point of view on the franchise, it really gives the first 6 series their due. It includes all the recognized greats, but also many less obvious highlights drawn from more obscure installments.

(episodes are listed exactly as they were by THR, so there's some peculiarities, like the 6-episodes of the Occupation Arc being one item, "Improbable Cause" being listed as it's own item though every other-two parter lists both parts, etc)

I'm going to be Captain James T. Obvious and pull "City on the Edge of Forever" It was one of a very few Kirk love stories that felt genuine and well-developed. Great drama, good character stuff for Kirk, McCoy and Spock, outstanding guest star in Joan Collins. It also had some effective humor and it has the distinction of doing a great time travel episode before it became a Star Trek gimmick.

A great action/adventure, a sympathetic antagonist, a Moby Dick homage before it became a Trek Trope, Decker kicking a redshirt 's ass using modified Kirk Fu, and great quotable lines throughout all wrapped up in a relatively unobtrusive allegory.

Oh now this list is a challenge, so many classics to choose from. I’ll save “Far Beyond the Stars”. It’s beautifully done, immersive and deeply emotional. Avery Brooks did an amazing and heartfelt job both behind and in front of the camera. I usually cry by the end, seeing Benny broken physically and emotionally by the brutal racism of the era is devastating. The message of hope at the end and the realisation that this is how far we’ve come is very Trekkian.

"IT'S ONLY A PAPER MOON" gets my next vote. Brilliantly acted by Aron and James. This was a highlight of season 7 before the final arc. Frankly, a highlight of the series, too. Definitely some heartstrings were tugged when Nog explains his feelings to Vic, and particularly now after he passed away, a few single man tears are shed for him.

We love you, man. And you are missed... but you are immortal through Nog.

Of this list, it's not the greatest of all time, and by no means the worst. How can it be hated so? Inserting characters into a filmed story made thirty years earlier is a daunting task, made more so because they didn't have the tools that cost roughly $1000 per year to license, or a one-time cost of $2000 if you bought the CS6 edition, if you kept buying the newest versions there was no cost savings but before I digress any farther...

The practical set re-creations were almost a 100% match-up. Some manufacturing processes just aren't done anymore (e.g. the plastic squiggly rectangles and trapezoids adorning turboshaft and horizontal corridor beams) but it still matches in impeccably. Even the coffee stain on the bridge floor was authentic...

Now, great effects are one thing but without a story to go along with them... "Trials", despite a "time orb" flaunting them through a lot of space, envelopes around and weaves into an existing story in a way that's both seamless and context unchanging - as well as being engaging and highly entertaining. They even got Mitzi McCall's (of Tattletales, Match Game, Kiddie Castle, Laugh_in, etc fame) husband (Charlie Brill!) back to reprise his role - which was great!

The closest of anything temporally dire happening is Dax bopping Kirk's noggin with a tribble but that's not going to change anything. Especially as the unborn tribbles it was carrying aren't sentient and thus couldn't trigger a catastrophic change in the timeline, much less any change had any of teh dain bramage occurred by said collision unto Kirk's forehead.

Did you know "tribble" is perceived by the spellchecker as "dribble", "gribble", or "terrible"? Me neither. What does "terrible" mean?

Speaking of "dribble", and hopefully no relation to "drivel", it also brought in some equality and showed women checking men out as well. TOS generally showed only men checking out women, which was one-sided and unfair because the 23rd century, much like the 1960s, were about sexual liberation. Roddenberry would have appreciated that, at least based on what was known from that 1976 album he made, "Inside Star Trek". Or by 1987's "Encounter at Farpoint" as Riker is checked out as well... at least before season 3 when nobody looks anymore but old Admiral Hansen starts talking to fellow old man Picard about how unlike Riker, he was having the hots for Sh-- oh good grief. Thankfully by INS, everyone says how those things aren't important any longer, but I suspect Troi and Bev, much like Geordi, wasn't getting any. Or maybe they were since it's claimed people who get it don't think it's a big deal or that it's overrated. Based on currently known and extrapolated data, HSV1/HSV1g transmission rates (up to 80% the adult population has it), it ain't that overrated, baby! And it's not that people watch this show for soap opera elements or who's banging whom... unless people are. Hmm, could Data (or "Datum" if TNG were scientifically accurate, but he was just "a bit player" in the show be an asymptomatic carrier?)

And that, Virginia, is why thinking into sci-fi continuity too much can cause headaches. and now, I'm going to go eat a whole half gallon tub of ice cream in less than two minutes, which is still slower than Al Bundy according to Peg.

The episade is always worth a watch, and definitely never to be put on any "worst episodes list". It succeeds on all levels. Woot!

Lots of my favorites already gone. I'm going to go with the obvious and eliminate The Inner Light. It's not my favorite episode of Star Trek, but it's my favorite episode of TNG. It's an episode which by all accounts should not work, because there's not really much of a plot to speak of, and pointing to the central conflict of the episode is quite difficult. But it works amazingly well because it examines the human condition in a very universal manner - letting us live through a life with Picard in a single episode which in many ways encapsulates what a rich full life can be. It almost feels "spiritual" in a certain manner of speaking because of how it taps into part of the psyche we all can relate to with its beauty and simplicity.
