THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

THE RULES: Below is a list of episodes from TNG, DS9, VOY, & ENT directed by Winrich Kolbe -- Trek's SECOND most prolific director! FORTY-EIGHT episodes directed across 4 series (weird that the universe didn't somehow stop him at 47...)

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

Eliminating DS9 Season 6: "The Sound Of Her Voice"

What can I say? The central character heals feelings of isolation in and damaged ties between Our Heroes. She makes them reconsider how important friendships are, especially in bleak times. She manages to restore some hope for the future. She does all this while she is in the worst (lethal) predicament possible herself - isolated in both location and time (even though neither party finds out about that till it's too late). And she does all this while Our Heroes (or we, for that matter) never get to see her alive, we only get, well, the sound of her voice.

An absolutely awesome, awesome episode.

Once again. I'm spoilt for choice.
I'll plump for the bona fide TNG classic, Darmok. The use of metaphor and ancient battles to communicate was very different. What really sold it was Picard doing everything he can to interpret Dathon's speech. Stewart and Winfield were wonderful in the episode.

There really is a lot I love here, I could easily make half of these my next save. I think I'll go with "Thine Own Self." I think this is one of those stealth Great Episodes that doesn't get a lot of attention. The alien characters on the planet with Data are so well-drawn, and Troi's promotion is an unusually strong B story -- and also great material for Troi, which didn't come around that often.

I also always get a chuckle out of what an afterthought Picard is in this one, appearing for only one line in the last scene. Memory Alpha trivia: briefest appearance of a series lead actor in the entirety of the franchise! (Aside from TAS "The Slaver Weapon", in which Kirk does not appear at all)

I am always saving "Basics, Part I", and I'm going to keep at it here! Yes, it has problems, but it transports me back to a whole bygone era. It's such a classic 90's season finale cliffhanger. I love the last act particularly, I will often dial up just the last act and watch only that.

I wish more shows still did these kinds of finale cliffhangers. It makes for such a satisfying viewing experience. And "Basics" had the best cliffhanger moment of any of the Voyager finales (even "Scorpion", which has the air go out in the last minute, rather than building to a crescendo as "Basics" does).
