Next up in these themed elimination games: EPISODES DIRECTED BY LEVAR BURTON. I never realized he directed this frequently! Trek's 7th-most-prolific director.

THE RULES. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below are the Star Trek episodes directed by LeVar Burton. Eliminate your FAVORITE or the one you deem the 'BEST.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

Much thanks and credit to @Farscape One, for having the director credits literally memorized. :bolian:

I have "Ex Post Facto" on right now and am LOVING IT and am thus tempted to save that first, but the truth is I really have to go right to the first one on the list, "Second Chances." I always thought this episode was delightful, that scavenger hunt scene is so sweet and emotionally the whole story really works. Not to mention, this is a script that must have been astoundingly difficult to execute, so for a first-timer to nail it this way... it's impressive!

So many I want to save first, but I am saving "TO THE DEATH" first.

This has always been a favorite of mine. It delves deep into Jem'Hadar culture, and you realize you DO NOT want to be friends with them. But damn they are the best soldiers ever. And Weyoun's first appearance! And his last appearance... until his clone next year!

Wonderful episode, and always a rewatch.

The Pegasus is a very fine episode of Star Trek.

Terry O'Quinn is perfectly cast as Riker's former mentor, and I love the genuine bond between them as Riker struggles to do the right thing and admit the truth of what really happened.

Captain Picard is a joy to behold, as well. :D

There's no time like the present:

    VOY Season 5: "Timeless"

The direction is pretty much first rate, and it's got Harry Kim at his finest. There's great acting by all - even Chakotay's wood! - and a pretty decent plot on top of all that, but LeVar made a near-goldmine into premium platinum. It's one of VOY's must-see episodes. One of the top-5.

    A couple highlights:

This gets me every single time, but also note it took the whole episode to build up to make that awesome little moment so much more poignant.

(And it's true: VOY did reuse the "Here I am from the future to change the past in the present so there will be a better future because I sucked in the past" routine a number of times... and each time it's been awesome. Especially "Endgame", which takes the theme and sprinkles on top some steroids, meth, crack,. coke, MJ, adderall, ritalin since it causes hyperactivity in those who don't have ADD, and others. :D )

Saving STAR TREK: KLIN... I mean, "SOLDIERS OF THE EMPIRE".

Probably the closest the franchise got to a backdoor pilot within a series, this was a superb look at the various minds of Klingons. Great acting, great story, and a great victory... of the Rotarran and General Martok against the Jem'Hadar!

    PREPARE 3 BARRELS OF BLOODWINE!!!

I can sum up Burton's direction of this episode in one word...

    Q'APLA!!!

    Saving Bar Association - Rom stands up to Quark due to unfair working conditions;
and the thinly veiled masturbation conversation between Rom and Leeta always makes me laugh. It's just a fun little episode.

Usually people tend not to say "faster" unless they're like really bored or disinterested or something, but

VOY Season 6: "Live Fast and Prosper"

Flows along like a branch upon a stream - smoothly and surprisingly fast because it's an enjoyable thing to do. It's not a deep story, but it's not needing to be. It's fun, and that's all it needs to be. Roll with the improbable premise and the actors and direction make it all shine. (Could the story be better? 99.9999% plus 0.00001% need to since there's always one story somewhere, never in plain sight, that is somehow inexplicably perfect... which is why the percentages above don't add up because nothing ever does...)

    ...it's a shame Orek isn't Orac...

Also, this is something easier to do in VOY because of being nowhere near the Federation. The swindlers doing ill-tailored outfits and oversided pips and comm badges are pretty much perfection as well. Nice attention to detail for a troupe of troublemakers who weren't.

If directors do casting, props to LeVar as well for hiring the fake-Tuvoc, fake-Chakotay (wood and all!), and fake-Janeway.

Like train heist caper tropes, it's easy to enjoy these doppelganger tropes.

Best. Teaser. Ever. "Yeah!" (Oh so 90s... even the 80s were in envy over that audible exclamation at the end... Remember, say no to drugs but yes to anchovies' awareness! Mmmm, super salty fish swimming on tomato sauce )

"Homestead"! A great end to the story of Neelix -- now that I think about it, he might be the ONLY Voyager character who gets a great ending.
Unless you count "Picard" for Seven Of Nine.

It was also fun that they suddenly remembered Neelix's ship was on board. It feels like that was something they should have been using all the time in episodes!

I need to crow on about this:

    VOY Season 4: "The Raven"

It's another episode with Seven stealing the show for sure... Only six episodes into the fourth season, which may have been a tad fast, but Seven is such a good character and so well-acted that it's more than enough compensation. We sorta knew, given what was already told, so maybe a long delay would have been overkill as well.

I loved the direction in this episode. Even the incidental music's volume is perfectly placed. It's low key and gives plenty of room for that not-unimportant fluff like what the actors are delivering. So many shows make the music too loud on a volume level, and/or in content. There's a time and place for - forgive the use of the term - bombast, but even I - a green newbie - know enough not to chuck it in for its own sake. This episode and what I recall was eminently done.

Were the Bomar really necessary to facilitate the plot? If for no other reason than "Okay, you may pass to save your three months but you can't stop anywhere and there will be checkpoints and you can only go 30MPH but we're not going to say why, nah nahnee nyah nyah, and if your nasal mucus is any hue other than clear you are in oh-so-much trouble!" Seven can still run off to a shuttle and find the ship that somehow made it to this area only for her and parents to get assimilated...

And what's with the wall plaque she discovers? Looks like a last minute "Oops, we forgot this detail" and then forgot the detail with the little catchphrase and "made in shipyard" text underneath. It's almost campy, a big plaque reading "THE RAVEN" and in a serif font and background emboss of a bird that makes me think of a Mel Brooks movie. Except the acting is treating all this as serious and to the point a bit more detail on the plaque would have cemented the dialogue's gravitas - it all seems like a little but in the end can really do more. It's a weird juxtaposition as shown.

The raven imagery seems a little contrived. It's in many ways a lovely metaphor, and I probably missed the point of it as well. Apart from it being a connection to the ship with the same name, forget the horse with no name.

As is Federation guns having no effect as they pew-pew her - what if any of the Borg technology is communicating its adaptations back to the Collective? (Which turned out not to be the case as later episodes proved.)

    Oh look, a clip!

Nice CGI, two decades before Terragen but Lightwave was a utility at the time... (keeping in mind all of it was rendered as 480i and on much slower hardware)

Even nicer, Jeri Ryan nails it out of three ball parks with the dialogue (which is already fairly sharp on its own) but, dayum, she really took her time in understanding and relishing Seven's background and the result is purely magnificent. I never knew about the actors' routs against one another but on screen not only is it not visible, the Seven/Janeway double act is still one of the entire Trek franchise's finest and most articulated and strongest pairings. Picard and Data were good, Kirk/Spock/McCoy make for a light and fun trio, but Seven and Janeway are the strongest and the most relatable and taking similar tropes and augmenting them with much detail and depth that makes them their own. (Also, Data is an android, but Seven had her very human childhood violated, resulting in stilted personality development and it's nice to see the crew work with her.. It feels so much more authentic by comparison. But it's like an invisible illness in many cases... even the best cold reader can be stumped. )

    Teaser time!

CGI had matured enough to put on the small screen some big screen scenes such as the shuttle's hull break hallmark moment. And it's about time they add emphasis to "Staaaaaaar", only not as long as with TNG's rendition - nicely refined and honed. :techman:

Definitely much teasing, though this one might have been a trailer:

It's a very good episode for Trip as he tries to do the right thing, only for it to backfire horribly. It also has one last, great performance from the late Andreus Katsulus,

I always found it quite fitting that he directed "COGENITOR" given his READING RAINBOW series. (That was gling to be my next save.)

    Saving "DREADNOUGHT" next.

It was a cool story, and had a rising tension that worked the whole way through. Great Roxann Dawson showcase.

This episode is definitely a Q-Tee,

    VOY Season 7: "Q2"
The third and final Q episode in VOY is so flandersized - all the superficial attributes but little of the detail therein (even lil' Q's sentencing is just a "remember this highlight harking back to TNG/S1? At Peppquidge Farm, we do!"), though having to raise lil' baby Dennis The Menace Q they're still having to deal with the unknowns of child-rearing just like the pesky humans all Q seem to hate.

But it's fun as all heck. I just watch it as a guilty pleasure. After the silly civil war allusion, there's no way it could get worse... then again, Tony and Jeannie got married too and had a revival movie 15 years later...

As usual, LeVar's direction is right at home with the Trek franchise, also elevating what's a very iffy script at times into rather a more consistently entertaining one despite the Q having been turned into a veneer of its former self. Yes, it's an iffy script - VOY never wandered into child rearing and TNG had a ship full families either with children or making lots of them so that one almost seems to be a better episode to have done the pro-Qui-ation with... but now VOY had a big chance to do it with.

Naturally, these little recaps include a clip show - So here's little Dennis the Menace Q - who is rather well-acted, which helped:

Oh look, Aunt Kathy censors herself! :o
It's actually a nice color scheme for the warp core engine BTW, complete with Torres getting wound up over it...
But woah dude, no 808 State or 2 Unlimited? Not even Utah Saints, Garbage or EMF? Dude, the scene needed better rave music choices... then again, it wasn't 1991 any longer either but even "I Love You Better" by The Monkees would have been a better fit for the rave, now that's a warped perspective...

Also, just whizzing them to the corridor outside and not even with a Dell, much less not adding funny clothing... or arguably better yet removing it... This show was doin' it for ENT all the time... :( Oh wait, he does do that eventually... just not with Chokotay like how I wanted...

An overall plot summary might be this:

(If you giggle even once, no matter how tiny a guffaw, then it's worth a watching no matter what. Even if you laugh at it. His teenage voice cracking thing is icing on the cake. And to think, JohnQ and SuzieQ did it to make lil' DennisTheMenaceQ! What a... qonundrum! :guffaw:)

I always liked Indiscretion. I don't think it was as strong as the follow-up, Return to Grace, but I did appreciate Ziyal being introduced.

Many tense scenes with Kira and Dukat appeared in the episode, and I always loved Visitor and Alaimo when they appeared together.

I can endlessly ride for all segments of “The Augments” trilogy. Enterprise’s best three parter. Also fun that he got to direct Spiner in this.

Saving "SIMILITUDE"... even though Sim himself wasn't saved. Well... a piece of him was, anyway.

Great episode. Acting was on point, directing was great. Great first script by Manny Coto, and equally great directing by Burton.
