I didn't realize until seeing this list what a big fan I am of Landau's work! So much of what is here is an episode I think is really good. And the ones I dislike I can recognize as being elevated in execution... there's a lot here that comes out better than could reasonably have been expected, given the scripts. The all-out failures are rare.

I'll start with a save for "Whispers", which has such a FANTASTIC atmosphere and feel. One of the cleverest Torture-O'Brien episodes, a very smart twist on the Trek trope of the crewmember possessed or replaced by an alien -- an ep from the POV of the alien intruder! And the way it unfolds is so wonderfully tense and spooky.

Particularly memorable are "O'Brien's" encounter with Jake in the hallway when he's on the run and asking Jake for help, and that creepy dinner with Keiko -- "But all I could think of, as I looked at her, was that this was not my Keiko."

Saving naked Picard ... uh, Chain of Command 2. I'm not as impressed by Landau than other directors, but this is one that shines: lots of tension, lots of smugness, lots of drama, carefully chose angles.

I'll start with "The Arsenal of Freedom".

This has always been a favorite of mine. It utilizes the entire cast very, very well, something that was not done on TNG very often. This stands out even more because this season had the most main characters than the rest of TNG. (9 leads, with only Wesley being absent, but given the plot and how so well executed this was, it can totally be forgiven.)

He clearly got off on the right foot in STAR TREK with how he directed this episode. Ending up with 45 episodes, you can easily see this happen when you watch this one.

(His busiest year was the 1994-95 season... 3 episodes apiece of DS9 season 3 and VOYAGER season 1.)

"Time's Arrow, Part I" I am always saving this one. This time, I'm going to praise the excellent production values in Past San Francisco. This episode looked great, they did such strong work with all those exteriors.

And that scene where the Devidians suck the life force out of the homeless man is creepy as fuck.

Qa'pla to "THE HOUSE OF QUARK"!

When I was younger, I would have saved this for the Quark story, which I still really love. As I've gotten older, and being married, I am saving this episode because of the O'Brien story. He just wanted to make his wife happy, and even if it meant rarely seeing her for what ended up being over a year, he did everything he could to give her happiness. And Bashir gave one of the bedt pieces of advice he's ever said when he tells him about profession vs. hobby.

There are a lot of good episodes here. It seems a better list than Cliff Bole's, but then I imagine a lot of that is the luck of the draw in getting a quality episode to direct.

After thinking about it for a little too long, I'll save Sarek as I don't think I've saved it yet (or for a while). :techman:

Nah, there are loads of reasons to save this. The episode looks at the elderly, and what becomes of what to be people like us before illness reduces them to nothing that resembles what they have been for the majority of their life. A frightening prospect, and one that is played by Mark Lenard so well. Seeing a Vulcan in the throes of such emotional outburst is frankly shocking.

Also excellent is Stewart. Picard is brave enough to take on the toll of Bendii Syndrome through a mind meld, and seeing him as a total wreck is very powerful.

Saving "Family" once again -- what the hell, it's a tradition for me! -- for the powerful performances of Patrick Stewart and Jeremy Kemp, the charming performances of Theodore Bikel and Georgia Brown, and the rare pleasure (for TNG) of seeing a follow-up to episodes that really, really called for follow-up.

I can never get this one out of my head...

TNG Season 3: "The Survivors"

The plot is bare bones, which means the atmosphere has to make up the difference. The atmosphere accomplishes this, and then some - and comes.

It's a unique horror/action story with a great twist.

The location work is simply magnificent. There's no feel of "20th century" whatsoever; kudos to the architect who build that house.

Really great acting from John Anderson and Anne Haney more than seal the deal.

It's definitely a go-to episode, as well as being exemplary of TNG's refined style that season three introduced.

Saving DS9 “By Inferno’s Light”. DS9 was at the peak of its powers and this episode changed the entire canvas. Lots of great moments, including Sisko’s exchange with Gowron: “Where the tides of fortune take us no man can know.” “They are tricky, those tides.” This began the slow build up to the stunningly brilliant season finale, one of the best runs of episodes Trek ever had.

Hey look, it's Cousin Oliver Olivia! Hey gang, let's go and meet her!

TNG Season 5: "Ensign Ro"

Except this show isn't "The Brady Bunch", despite being so in outer space.

Michelle Forbes is perfectly cast as the new thorn in the Enterprise's bush.

What's even more cool is how Guinan is the first to jump in and do the right thing. Here's a snippet of the episode:

(Troi and Crusher go to Ro's table)
TROI: Do you mind if we join you?
RO: Yes.
(Troi and Crusher move on, with Geordi watching the events and then opts for Guinan's free advice instead of paying for Troi's)
LAFORGE: I'll tell you one thing. If I find myself on an away team with Ensign Ro, I won't turn my back on her.
GUINAN: Perhaps the Captain thought she'd be valuable on the mission?
LAFORGE: That was orders. Had to be. She doesn't belong here. She doesn't even belong in the uniform, as far as I'm concerned.
GUINAN: Really?
LAFORGE: Really.
GUINAN: Sounds like someone I'd like to know. Excuse me.
(Guinan goes to Ro's table and sits down)
GUINAN: Am I disturbing you?
RO: Yes.
GUINAN: Good. You look like someone who wants to be disturbed.
RO: I'd rather be alone.
GUINAN: Oh, no you wouldn't.
RO: I beg your pardon?
GUINAN: If you wanted to be alone, you would've stayed in your quarters. The only reason to come here is to be amongst people.
RO: Who are you?

TOS was about differences in attitudes and getting along and even being friends despite them (something DS9 did a bit better but the more stylized and theatrical style of The Big Three's bickering is hardly without its merits, especially as more naturalistic acting replaced "theater" style that was the norm decades earlier!). But this episode pretty much reminds the audience how much of a clique TNG could be at times (with Ro being her own clique, as well as the Bridge Crew being theirs). Only this time it's used to great benefit.

I'll next save "Half A Life", a quite beautifully done episode. Everything is clicking in this one. The moral dilemma is compelling, Majel Barrett delivers one of her best performances, the ROTW actually works thanks to excellent chemistry and clever writing, and Michelle Forbes makes her first contribution to the Trekverse.

Deja Q is the funniest use of Q in the franchise, in my opinion.

Guinan stabbing Q with a fork to check if he's mortal is a brilliant moment, and of course in response to him asking what he has to do to prove his mortality, Worf utters, "Die." And the equally hilarious, "Oh very good Worf. Eat any good books lately?"

Removing Broken Link. It was between that and Sins Of The Father. Broken Link really gives depth to Founder society, and the way they reacted to the unprecedented act of internal violence. Then Garak's actions in the episode.

Number Six, where are you?

TNG Season 2: "The Schizoid Man"

(the title was in homage to "The Prisoner", starring Patrck McGoohan from 1968)

I forgot about the ending,. Where Graves-as-Data transfers his memory into Enterprise's computer. Only this time his soul did not travel with it.

The idea of a human soul being in a computer is very well-handled. Better than TOS attempt in "What are little girls made of" and in some ways better than the Doctor Who story "Four to Doomsday", which uses the same theme but in a different way. The journey of Graves as Data was surprisingly compelling. His unwittingly hurting Kareen being the catalyst behind his decision to vacate Data, having realized more than he ever bargained for (and good continuity with Data being strong, given how he pummeled Worf badly in a turbolift, in a tense scene in "Datalore", another wonderfully largely well-directed episode...)

The other issue is season 2's running theme/arc, exploring the what-if regarding Data being a sentient being and in an innovative take... this is rather an unsung little story and a good one.

Was "Graves" a bit of dark humor, given his corporeal body is floating in space but his soul and memories are just data in the ship's computer? And it's a shame they didn't hint at this in later episodes; even one where Graves had an insight that their computer banks may not otherwise have had recorded. But the information may have been categorized obfuscated, with the crew only knowing Graves put his brains in there to rest. (But on paper this would be a semi-naff development; sometimes a sequel is best not made no matter how noble. Even "Emergence" may have been better off not mentioning this. Then again, "Graves" is mentioned in that episode, albeit in its direct form of "place where corpse is buried", as an act by Data to mimic, so that may have been their attempt - albeit a slightly shrouded one.)

The plot is straightforward, but the themes it explores are meaty enough - I've always enjoyed the episode and even some of the quirkiness within.

"PROGRESS" progresses off this list.

Kira was definitely the standout character of DS9 season 1, and this episode was another pivotal one for her growth arc.

Excellent guest casting, great script ny Peter Allan Fields, and brilliant performance by Nana Visitor. And Les did a fantastic job making the episode actually feel like it's moving, not static... especially if you look at the dialogue on paper. (Very similar to why "MELD" worked so well, too.)

I love THE PRISONER! And it was a nice nod, Cutie.

I used to think that the whole reason "Emergence" happened with the computer getting that way was because of the Graves download. That episode explained the 'how', but I always figured what made the Enterprise computer special were things like that which happened to it, which for me fills in the 'why' blank.

I really enjoyed "The Forsaken." It was cool to see Lwaxana in a new context, and her three-episode arc with Odo is a wonderful one. I also think Bashir's asshole-ambassadors subplot is fun, I love that sequence where they're first trapped by the fireball in the corridor.
