I'll bid farewell, once again, to The Undiscovered Country, a top-tier TOS feature with a timely theme, great use of characters, and some terrific lines. I listed them at length in another round, so now I'll just leave one. "Well, I'm off to bed. Let me know if there's any other way we can screw up tonight." And for purposes of this round, I should note that Michael Dorn's Colonel Worf, despite (intentionally) coming across as rather different in personality from his better-known grandson, certainly shares the latter's determination and dedication to duty -- he knows from the start that his clients will be convicted, but gives them a solid, even spirited, defense nonetheless.

I love "Pathfinder"! The use of Troi here is pretty seamless (unlike her subsequent Voyager appearances), there's no better Barclay episode, and I get emotional at the end every time. Despite it's distant setting, Voyager tried sooooooo hard soooooooo many times to do tie-in's to other Trek, and mostly it was disastrous "False Profits" failures. But this one, effortless. It's a bonus TNG ep that also makes perfect sense as a VOY ep. So clever.

TNG “Relics” is just a delight from beginning to end and exactly how a crossover should be done. Warm, nostalgic and moving, it gave James Doohan a wonderful opportunity to shine, but also came with a decent enough plot (I really enjoyed seeing the Dyson sphere brought to life, such a neat concept). Everything that “Unification” should have been but wasn’t.

Saving Emissary. Patrick Stewart plays a calm, collected, dignified punching bag to great effect. It's nice to see the emotions that Locutus instilled in people (maybe we will see that again **ahem**).

"Timeless" was a genuinely moving story of loss and guilt, with decent work by Robert Beltran and Garrett Wang's best-ever performance as Harry Kim. Using LeVar Burton as Captain LaForge, the opponent to their scheme, let the audience understand that both sides were good people who had no choice but to be in opposition. And as the episode's director, Burton put together a well-paced and visually impressive outing.

My first save is Nepenthe.

It was easily my favourite episode of Picard, with a warm mixture of exciting nostalgia, and character progression.

Riker and Troi still together and happy was a joy, even if it was tinged with a bittersweet recent history with the death of their child.

Whoever played Kestra (another nice TNG homage) was a revelation, because she just had an instant rapport with Soji. They were soon sharing their stories about their toils they've faced.

[at Quark's]

Eliminating TNG Feature: “Star Trek Generations” (Kirk, Scotty, Chekhov).

This might be an often denounced movie, but I don't think it's that bad. Now, to begin with, I certainly don't like the way they 'offed' Kirk, in a cause that was heroic, but not something outstanding, considering Kirk's career. It felt somewhat arbitrary, and of course the real reason was he simply had to make room for Picard. That's the main thing I don't like about this movie. However, it's still nice to see both crews in the same movie.

For the rest however, it is a nice 'passing the torch' movie, in which we get to see some character depth of Picard, him being confronted with getting older, his own mortality and being forced to ask himself what it is he really wants to do with the remainder of his life. This runs like a thread through the entire movie. Starting with the death of his nephew, he is thrown back on his own, since 'there will be no more Picards to carry the family on' . We see him respond with grief and also some anger to his crew, who don't deserve it. He then meets this maniac (Soran) and at this point in the movie, it feels like he is just doing his job to bury his own grief - when he understands the danger this man represents to millions who can't defend themselves he does what he can to stop him. Then he gets cast in this what if scenario- the Nexus. What if everything was perfect and he would have had the life he secretly dreamt of? - Only to come to the realisation that it's only an illusion, and choices don't matter in an illusion. He then meets Kirk whom he has to make conscious of the fact that it's an illusion. Kirk at first denies this, but when he comes to the same conclusion he agrees to come with Picard, and at the same time gives him the mental toolbox to continue with his own life again: make a difference. After all, Kirk had had approximately had the same experience at the beginning of this movie, nearly 90 years ago (and also in an earlier movie). At the end of the movie, we see Picard has integrated his recent experiences : " Someone once told me that time is a predator that stalks us all our lives. I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment, ...because they'll never come again. ...What we leave behind is not as important as how we lived. ...After all, Number One, we're only mortal." All in all, it resembles somewhat the standard stages of coping with grief psychology talks about.

Aaaaand I didn't want to write this long a reason, but now that I did, I'm not going to erase it again Bottom line, I simply like this movie - for the most part.

I will save "Star Trek Into Darkness", which I have always loved, despite it's general poor reputation -- I actually thought it did an excellent job of balancing the imperatives of a big summer blockbuster with the essential Star Trek spirit. And I still vividly recall my audience cheering when Nimoy appeared on the viewscreen, which surprised me, as overall my read on that particular crowd had been "summer blockbuster audience" instead of "Trek fans."

I'll eliminate DS9's "Doctor Bashir, I Presume." Robert Picardo's Doctor was my favorite character on VOY, and bringing him on to DS9 to play Dr. Lewis Zimmerman working on the next generation of holodoc was an exceedingly clever way to get the revelation of Dr. Bashir's past going. And seeing him romance Leeta was a hoot.

[Farscape One]

Saving STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT.

I have a lot of fond memories of this movie... it was the first movie I drove myself to. (This was a week or so after I got my license.)

It's a great movie. It ties in history of the franchise in a perfect way.

James Cromwell, Alice Krige, and Alfre Woodard nailed their parts.

Great plot, acting, pacing, beautiful new Enterprise. Everyone got at least a little bit to do... which was more than can be said for the other 3 TNG movies. Fantastic directing by Frakes.

I never get tired of this movie.

[Brennyren]

"All Good Things" was the easily the best of the Star Trek finales, a consummately TNG story with interesting roles for each of the characters. Stewart, as he so often was, was brilliant, and deLancie, as he so often was, was his perfect foil. Can't say Colm Meaney (by then better known in DS9), played a particularly key role, but it was pretty satisfying to see him back where he began his Trek journey.

I'm going to make an out of left field pick, Oasis. This was one of the better season one episodes of Enterprise, with a real air of mystery and some heart at the end. Sure, it is a ripoff of a superior DS9 episode, but still, it looks better given what surrounded it.

The one that started it all:

TNG, Season 1: “Encounter At Farpoint” (Admiral McCoy)​

The story is two episodes smooshed together, but the Q subplot is far more entertaining. That and Troi being the only one to save the day since her empathic powers allow for far more of actual interest than "He's hiding the obvious, captain" Shame that didn't last.

McCoy's scripted line should have reflected Data rambling years, months, days. hours, seconds, nanoseconds, picoseconds; what shows on screeen would have worked a lot better. Their scene together is otherwise quite good.

The story looks phenomenal on remastered blu-ray too.

I weirdly find myself drawn to save "Firstborn", which I think is a OK episode overall, but I do really love that Riker/Quark viewscreen interaction. It somehow did not feel at all forced! It made perfect sense for those two to communicate in this story! And I always love:

QUARK: Don't bother, I voided them while we've been talking.

I think I totally know which one is gonna win this ...

anyway, I choose DS9’s “Defiant”.

Marc Alaimo must have had deja vu as the plot is pretty much the same as his debut episode as a Cardassian —TNG’s “The Wounded”. This isn’t as strong an episode, but it’s still a good one, with plenty of action and suspense. It’s actually great seeing (a) Riker in DS9 and there’s plenty of intrigue and foreshadowing with the Obsidian Order twists and turns. Can’t remember the name of the female Obsidian Order overseer, but she would have made a great recurring villain!
