Easily the best premiere episode of any Trek series, showing a far larger universe, in the vein of TNG season 2 with the mystique and danger, in a short span of time, and with nuance. And without space calamari in those glorious trendy 80s neon purple and pink.

Ben also quickly proves that the winner of every "Kirk or Picard?" contest was Sisko.

[Qonundrum]

"Duet" is one of DS9's finest -- possibly one of the franchise's finest. Amon Marritza is the hero Cardassia doesn't deserve, but Bajor (and Kira) needed to see.

The ending still haunts. An ending that, given the setup and execution of the episode's content, leaves an incredible gut-punch. If only they had the equipment to have healed his wounds - this is not the 1701-D by any means, something DS9 was quick and wise to show from the very get-go and that the Star Trek universe with all its planets and civilizations therein - wasn't as saccharine as 90% of what viewers had seen between 1966 and 1993. And certainly not as complex or multi-layered.

Easily one of the finest of the franchise, every plot beat is solid, every line of dialogue has some level of importance, and every plot turn is out of the blue yet feels utterly natural - never contrived. That's impressive in of itself. Adding a layer to a complex and hostile situation the viewers only knew the veneer of, this sort of thing was never done for the era of Kirk or Picard, yet feels like the spirit of Kirk's era - just for a next generation. It's raw, it's real, and with luck makes viewers wonder about the complexity of all those episodes from the past where Enterprise leaves the shiny happy people to their future where it's nowhere near as simple as that. Marritza was indeed a hero. Killed by an ignorant twerp who failed to notice that MAJOR KIRA of all people was walking with him and with no armed guards that one would otherwise expect for an actual criminal. The guy wasn't opportunistic. He was a damnedable idiot. This paragraph alone barely scratches the surface of the depth and power of that episode... if not the power and depth DS9 truly had.

I'll go with The Die is Cast next, which is an excellent conclusion to Improbable Cause.

The high-stakes story is s tense, especially with the all-out assault on the Changeling Homeworld. The torture inflicted on Odo by Garak is hard to watch, as well, especially as all he reveals is that he wants to return home.

Given the chance, I will always save "For the Cause" for that shocking moment when I realized I wasn't rooting for Starfleet. Maquis sympathizer here, and props to DS9 for fleshing out the opposition enough to make that possible. Eddington was somewhat under-written as a rebel at this point, but Kasidy came across as proud and principled -- and clearly sorry that she'd hurt Ben.

I'll save DS9 Season 5: Empok Nor

A dark, tense episode, in which Garak slowly falls under the influence of psychotropic drugs on a 'haunted' and (it turns out, not quite) deserted sister of Terok Nor (DS9), making him an extremely dangerous hunter.

Even so, at the end of it, I wondered how much of it was actually a repressed darker part of Garak's personality, hidden beneath that smooth exterior, and that the drug simply brought it out.

- Me too. Except the "left no impression" part, that is. I can remember lots of bits and pieces, but just not in what order or which episode. Oddish's quote explains it for me:
