Game The Most Disliked Cardassian Episode

Though I will say, pretty much every last bit of the Garak-Ziyal relationship creeped the crap out of me. Dude! She's practically a kid! Did they have to try that hard to prove that Garak wasn't interested in Bashir?

Did they really try all that hard? He was reluctant and then protective, and as far as I can remember there was nothing predatory or otherwise explicit represented in their relationship. Indeed, they even touch on the unreasonableness of it all: They note that they're the only Cardassians on the station and are both exiled from their people, and that Ziyal is the daughter of his greatest enemy. By the time Ziyal is on DS9, she's an adult (barely), and Garak never takes advantage of her youthful attraction to him.

The closest they came to a romance was her making him promise to come back. Beyond that... uh... they laid on hot rocks somewhat near each other while fully clothed?

^^^No, there was nothing predatory or explicit about it, but I will admit that the full generation between the two of them weirded me out. Even if the actress in "For the Cause" was older than her predecessor, the character was still quite young -- barely an adult, as you say. And I did not see any chemistry between her and Garak, despite Andrew Robinson's best efforts.

Though TBH, I might as well admit that I never cared for storylines which paired either Garak or Bashir with someone else. When it came to those two, my "shipping goggles" were crazy-glued to my face.

The Garak/Ziyal stuff is so odd to me, mostly because I can't really make sense of what the writers were aiming for; ostensibly, it was intended to be a romantic relationship (and there is definitely a small segment of Trek fans who view it as a grand romance) but it gets fumbled so badly. Setting aside the politics behind the decision to pair Garak up with a female love interest, as well as the questionable practice of aging the character up to put her in a relationship (or, at least, re-casting older actors for the role), it is never fully clear just what kind of relationship it is, and this lack of clarity seems like a failure on the part of the writers rather than any kind of deliberate ambiguity.

While Ziyal's feelings for Garak are clearly romantic, Garak comes across as conflicted/ambivalent toward her attention, and at times even completely disinterested. Granted, he's a character who thrives on obfuscation; he plays his cards close to the vest (and also likely doesn't feel like he deserves to be loved) and maybe that's what the writers were aiming for, but if that's the case, it doesn't quite translate. His dynamic with her reads more paternal than anything else. If Ziyal had stuck around for the rest of the series, it likely would have developed into something more, but of course that isn't what happened, and what we got was two characters who do not seem to be on the same page.

At any rate, they really did Ziyal dirty in general. She had so much potential, but instead she got sent to an early grave so Dukat could tragically unravel and go full Space Aleister Crowley.

My fav Garak/Bashir moment was always Garak showing up in Bashir's bedroom in the middle of the night in "Cardassians", and Bashir's casual reaction. It's quite clearly not the first time Garak has let himself into the bedroom at that hour...

I always felt like I was clear on what Garak's feelings towards Ziyal were, but, given that it's so differently interpreted in the fandom, I suppose it must be more ambiguous than I originally thought. But I always perceived it as Garak seeing her feelings as hopeless, without any romantic potential between them (Garak is bi- or pansexual in my headcanon) -- just because he had enough life experience to understand that this sweet, naive young innocent could never be in a real relationship with a man of his age, who's had such a vastly different life experience as compared to hers. There's notes of wistfulness -- maybe it would be nice to be the kind of person that could be in a relationship with Ziyal -- but clarity that he wasn't that person, and never would be.

But there's also genuine affection and maybe even love for her, but only as a friend, and as his only in-person connection to another Cardassian. And the friendship motivates him to handle her romantic feelings gently.

The writers really tripped themselves up with that idea that they needed to make Ziyal into a paragon of perfect sweetness and innocence and light, in order for us to care about her tragic death. It doesn't make it more sad, it just makes her harder to relate to. Not to mention, the girl grew up as a slave in a forced labor camp! They never did the work of explaining how she came out of that seemingly brutal experience with such a sunny disposition and naive worldview.

AND the version of Ziyal that's a little more jagged, a little darker, would be a version of Ziyal that might have actually fit with Garak, so that's another missed opportunity.

I also agree I find it odd when people perceive Ziyal/Garak as a grand, sweeping love story. She kissed him once, and he was NOT into it!

As for my next elimination, I will save "The Changing Face Of Evil," for the awesomeness of Damar's speech at the end, one of the great DS9 moments.

"TACKING INTO THE WIND" is next for me. So many great episodes are already saved, and many still on the list.

This one is special because not only did it tie up A LOT of things, but continued other threads in the final arc. The acting, the pace, dialogue... everything about this episode was gold. One of Ronald D. Moore's best episodes.

I'll save Defiant.

Dukat and Sisko working together is a lot of fun as they track down the wayward Tom Riker. The realization that the Obsidian Order is building a fleet of ships seemed to worry Dukat a lot, which would then lead to Improbable Cause/The Die is Cas.

Saving Sacrifice of Angels. Dukat dripping with arrogance, but also with pathos, Ziyal's betrayal, Garak's ennui, great stuff from Damar. It's also a tight script--one of those ISB jobs in which it seems like it had too many stories for one hour, but still managed to work.

I'm saving The Die is Cast from season 3 of DS9 now.

This episode signaled the reveal of the Tal Shiar-Obsidian Order fleet, bypassing the station and entering the Gamma Quadrant to lay waste to the Founders' homeworld. It establishes the worshipful relationship between Garak and his father and highlights the fact that Garak's grown an incompatible-with-the-Obsidian-Order conscience while staying under the Federation's protection and interacting with the Bajorans on a daily basis.

A perfect demonstration of the blunder of unaccountable intelligence agencies, and how easily they're manipulated into an extremely costly mistake that bleeds the Alpha Quadrant dry of manpower, assets, and brains. The immense weakening of previously impressive secret police shows the hubris of an apparatus all too comfortable with being feared and dominant.

“Rocks and Shoals” is safe, it’s a killer of an episode. Dripping with tension, with Sisko in an utterly impossible situation. There were a couple other episodes that actually made you sympathise with the Jem’Hadar, but none moreso than this. Keevan the Vorta is a loathesome creature, and sadly exemplifies many of our politicians today. The Kira B-plot also packs a huge punch.

There continue to be so many good ones. "What You Leave Behind" wraps up the Cardassian arc perfectly. Seeing that Cardassian establishing shot in ruins, just as the Bajor shot was in ruins in "Emissary", makes for a very dramatically satisfying symmetry. Damar's final sacrifice. Literally every word from Garak, up to that perfect final scene with Bashir. It's all so good. (Well, except for most of the fire caves stuff, but I'm practiced at just not really focusing on those bits)

That scene where the Cardassian resistance crew cracks up when they're stuck outside Dominion headquarters and unable to get in is particularly brilliant.

Saving "Preemptive Strike." It was so brilliantly set up in regards to Ro's character, that there was really only one way it could have played out -- and, with a tragic and powerful inevitability, it did. Michelle Forbes did a standout job in showing Ro's doubts and deep conflicts. I had never been much of a Ro fan (didn't dislike her, just not a big fan), but I bled for her in this one.

Since @Farscape One saved the first half of this fantastic two-parter, I'll go with "By Inferno's Light" next.

Every time I revisit this episode, I'm on the edge of my seat despite knowing exactly how it all plays out. It's a tense one, with the conflict between the Federation and the Dominion kicking into high gear. Things take a dire turn as Dukat reveals his secret negotiations with the Dominion, selling his own people into a doomed alliance in a power play to gain control of the Cardassian government. Plotwise, there's a lot of moving pieces: Dukat's shenanigans, the Federation/Klingon/Romulan team-up, Changeling Bashir scheming, and the prison camp escape plot, and it all hangs together amazingly well.

STILL so many good ones! "Ties Of Blood & Water" has always been a standout for me. Another great example of DS9's gift for telling huge, galaxy-spanning epics, through the form of a series of small personal stories. There is so much information transmitted to us here about the new Dominion/Cardassian Alliance, but none of that is THE story, it's all in service of the Kira/Ghemor arc, which I find just so beautiful and moving.

It's one of DS9's most perfect final acts. Kira's incredible monologue about her father and Ghemor's deaths. And then the scene where Weyoun and Dukat come into Sisko's office, so pleased with their apparent victory. When Dukat smugly asks for Ghemor's body, I loooooooooooove that smile that crosses Sisko's face as he responds that's going to be impossible, Ghemor's funeral arrangements have already been made, and then the cut to Kira burying him beside her father. Just beautiful.

The episode is also quite clever in how it uses Worf to unfold all the exposition about who Ghemor is, and that scene where Weyoun downs the poison is a delight.

A Time to Stand is a powerful opening to season six, showing a disturbingly happy Dukat in charge of Terok Nor once more, whilst the Federation is falling apart.

Late to the game, with a lot of the best episodes already taken, but a lot left. I'll pick Second Skin. A great early DS9 episode which helped deepen the Cardassians, and it contained a similar late-episode "twist" as Duet, making us realize all at once that the actual target of Kira's transformation was entirely different from what we had initially believed.

I feel it often gets lost in the shuffle when the final arc is being praised, but "Penumbra" does a wonderful job of setting things up for the endgame. To focus on the Cardassian aspect of it, all the table-setting there is great... Damar's slipping deeper into alcoholic self-loathing, the Female Changeling decaying in seclusion.

I also always loved the way Dukat's description of his pagh-wraith possession contrasted with what Keiko and Jake had to say when it happened to them. Those two described cold sinister darkness coiled inside of them, while glassy-eyed Dukat describes a loving embrace.

It even has the tiny "Insurrection" tie-in!

"EMPOK NOR" gets killed off this list.

A very creepy episode, and a nice O'Brien one... a torture O'Brien episode without rrally torturing him. Though losing all of his subordinates except Nog must hurt badly.

I honestly feel that is the version of Garak that Andrew Robinson really wanted to play for the Mirror Universe. There's something about him in this episode that just fits there.

Damn, we're finally getting into disagreement territory. I can't agree with this one at all. I thought Empok Nor was a dreadfully dull episode that made no sense. :( I could see it taking place on DS9, a plot to retake the station or at least sow chaos, but I found it questionable that it'd all take place on an abandoned station. A series of very convenient events to facilitate a "horror" episode, but it just missed the mark for me. A team even slightly more prepared would have captured the Cardassians and given the Federation a bounty of biological and intelligence data that the Union would have very much not wanted them to have. It doesn't make sense that they'd be left there, trap or abandoned or otherwise. Too much risk with too little gain (which is to say, almost none).

Saving Things Past. Perhaps it's not the strongest episode: the only character work we get is from Dukat himself, which means that it reflects more his unique personality than anything else. However, the situation shows the conditions imposed by the Cardassians better than other episodes, including Necessary Evil (which is a better episode).
