Long overdue that Uhura - fourth in Command - gets to take command as she had one if not two times in TOS where she otherwise would have except for Commodore Twit conveniently being on the ship that week - which is a blessing in disguise since nobody would want to see Uhura be as much of an out-of-place as Stocker was and I'm sure there was one other episode where it should have been Uhura but I don't think it was Catspaw... But she finally gets to take command and she kicks heiney.

TAS Season 1: "The Lorelei Signal"​

From recollection and I recall this being in my top-5 TAS episodes, the story was contrived so that only the men would be afflicted (think "Sirens" of Greek lore, or "Psirens" if you're a fan of Red Dwarf - but without the naturally bawdy comedy, of course), but many stories are contrived because that's part of the point... and the point is that it's done rather well - going above the generic basics, to make the story that much more interesting in turn. Initially, I - like any good corn-fed hamster - was expecting one cliche after another, but this one didn't deliver -- very much a good thing!

The reason for taking men was to keep the Taureans "immortal"... but a tradeoff for the lack of men is their inability to reproduce via the icky way of doing it. Which makes sense, until they run out of men wandering by what with the help of a machine that ships pick up on so they visit and *oops* all males are toast. Only without the butter and marshmallows and those little chocolate bars and graham crackers... But I digress. Everyone being stuck with their proverbial blinkers on, nobody thinks of a better way to run the joint - except to reel in more men to kill, in quite the vicious unending circle.

Spock, with a longer lifespan, is also put to fairly good use.

The resolution is classic TOS interfering with other societies, and thankfully the leader of the Taureans is looking forward to-- eh, making a bunch of babies then dying of infirmity via old age? Well, no episode is perfect, but this high concept episode makes it easier to roll along with. Especially, as I recall, the episode really didn't hint at too much - apart from their bodies returning to normalcy and eventually aging, instead of having an immutable and boring immortality. What with the swinging 60s and disco 70s, it's too easy to guess that doing the oingyboingy is the intended inference, but where will the men be hauled in from? There's a nice role reversal from Rigel XII where Mudd was (illegally) hauling women around for lonely miners... Dang, is this galaxy a kooky place or what?

A shame live action Trek didn't do this as I've no qualms swapping this with "Spock's Brain", "The Empath", and a dozen or two other episodes.

A shame it's only half an hour long after commercials because this episode has a lot to explore and barely crams it all in. It does so well enough, enough to enjoy and appreciate, but I get the sense it had much more potential than what a one-off animated episode could do.

A shame TAS had a reduced episode count. A shame it wasn't done live as well, but as The Simpsons once pointed out, that sort of sweeps week event puts a big strain on the hapless animators...

Spock loves pointing out the odds. So glad that Han Solo isn't there...

Another episode that deserved to be a one-hour live-action piece, Stephen Kandel puts in another fun-but-zany adventure with Harcourt Fenton Mudd. A character that would be used in one of the potential pilot episodes. While "Mudd's Women" was not the second pilot, the script would still be used and Harry would be popular enough... Not wrongly so...

Stephen would later write for "Wonder Woman" (finding some neat-if-not-sometimes-cliched ways to bring in outer space elements into some of WW's scripts, but he also wrote season 2's premiere and it's done quite well) and had written for a ton of other shows before and since, with the level of plotting, intrigue, and/or camp being variable - which is inevitable for any writer. But his Mudd stories, hit or miss, always remain watchable due to just enough of a blend of characterizations and actors portraying them.

"No Small Parts" -- Lower Decks REALLY knows how to do a finale! This was such a stunning surprise when it first aired, the number of different levels it worked on. I am continually astounded by the density of Lower Decks, the sheer number of things they can do in their short running time.

The death of Shaxs was a total shocking gut-punch. The Pakleds AND Badgey are actually scary as villains. You feel sadness for the crew that dies in the opening. It offered the most exciting space battle to have yet appeared in streaming Trek. And it's also hilarious! The Spock Helmet appears! Just a brilliant piece of work.

"An Embarrassment of Dooplers" is great fun, especially when Freeman inadvertently discovers the solution to their duplicating problem and the Cerritos crew gleefully puts it to use. And it's just plain nice when, having been rejected from the big Starfleet bash, the senior staff and two of our favorite lower-deckers share drinks and enjoy each other's company in a cozy bar.

As much as I love Lower Decks, I do think the pilot is probably it's roughest episode to date. But, shockingly, "Envoys" comes out perfect -- it's hard to think of other TV shows that had themselves completely figured out by the 2nd episode. That show is run by geniuses.
