Game The Most Disliked 2-Part or Double Episode

Hey all! It's been two years since our last cycle of themed "Most Disliked" elimination games, so we're due for another run, and the start of three weeks of double Trek seemed like perfect timing. First up: double episodes!


THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

THE RULES: Below is a list of every 2-hour, 2-part, or double episode from a Star Trek series.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome, you do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

And I'll take the first save/elimination for "All Good Things..." TV doesn't pull off that many perfect series finales, and this is one! The interweaving of past, present, & future is a brilliant device, powerfully executed. They do such a good job of honoring the series and providing a sense of closure, despite not being able to really close anything because of the movies.

And it was a great end to the Picard & Q arc. For 28 years, anyway...

It's good to see these games return!

My first elimination is "THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR".

In many ways, it was like second pilot for DS9. But it was PERFECT. The story, the action... EVERY character had great beats and moments. It seamlessly brought in Worf without him fully taking over the show. (I'm looking at you, VOYAGER writers.)

My next elimination is "WHAT YOU LEAVE BEHIND".

This was an excellent finale. While a couple elements were flawed, such as the reuse of so many shots in the battle, it can be forgiven because everything else worked beautifully. It was the right kind of finale for the show.

TNG and DS9 had different types of shows... one was truly episodic, the other more serialized. Each did justice for their respective shows, which is why I always put those two finales neck and neck with each other.

I might just be excited for TIME TRAVEL from all the Picard season 2 trailers, but I now find my mind going to "Future's End." It's just pure fun. Gorgeously produced -- it really makes you wish Berman Trek got to real locations more!

The only complaint I ever have is that the Torres/Chakotay plot in Part II has pacing issues. Otherwise, pretty flawless. I think this one is endlessly rewatchable.

[Farscape One]

Despite DS9 being my favorite series, I have to say "CARETAKER" was the best series premiere the franchise ever did, which is why it us my next save. A good deal of credit for why is the Maquis background was established on DS9 and TNG the tv season before, so less time was needed for the exposition.

Very well done pilot. I don't really have a negative about it.

(Except that the potential was not fully utilized... but that's not the fault of the pilot.)

Saving TNG, Season 3 & 4: “The Best Of Both Worlds”

I don't think I really need to explain this one, but here goes. Put the TNG series into a higher gear, showed us how chilling the Borg could really be (a faceless enemy that simply would take you over) with whom no discussion was possible because they wouldn't let the pursuit of their goals be hindered by anything and didn't even acknowledge pretty fundamental concepts (to us) such as death, or resistance, or free will. With Picard transformed into the nemesis, Riker had to 'throw the book he wrote' away to beat him, and to save him. Great tense moments all around. With an amazing resolution (at the time), even if it was clear this could only work once.

"Improbable Cause/The Die Is Cast"
"Improbable Cause" in particular is one of Trek's most perfect scripts. There's not a line or a moment off in that one. It's also one of DS9's clear level-up moments, the series is notably improved after this two-parter. Fantastic character work all around. Perfect direction (THAT CAVE SCENE! was there ever a better use of that damn cave set?)

They did advertise it as a two-parter at the time, and Memory Alpha lists it as a two-parter. I often defer to the MA judgment when it seems like it might go either way. But I agree that one is a bit nebulous (in some sense, it is also simultaneously a three-parter w/ "Tears Of The Prophets").

Avery Brooks knew how to get the best shots as director. "IMPROBABLE CAUSE" is a great example. "FASCINATION" was the best use of the Promenade set in the series.

(I've always loved that episode because it's fun, but the camera work really is icing on the cake.)

I always knew I was in for a special treat when I saw his name as director.

I agree about Tears (and Call to Arms + the first 4 episodes of the next season). Strange that only Favor and Sacrifice are considered officially 2-parters.

TNG, Season 6 & 7: “Descent” - I liked seeing Dr Crusher being a leader. It would have been interesting to see more of her being in charge of the bridge in Season 7 and the movies. It was cool that she became a captain of a medical ship in AGT and I think it was an interesting career move.
