The Monster in the Dark

Inspired by Kegek I decided to jot down a quick Halloween tale of my own- apologies for the lack of polish...

Fear. It is not something I have ever felt before.

I have fought a hundred battles on a dozen worlds, but all the soldiers I fought beside are dead now, killed by the monster in the dark, and I am alone for the first time in my life. I have never felt so isolated, so cold.

I see movement to my left, turn and fire, my weapon’s ray illuminating the darkness- my IR filter compensates so I am not blinded.

There is nothing there. But I am certain I saw something…

I move down the corridor, my gaze shifting left and right, the tip of my weapon following, ready to fire the moment I acquire the target.

There is an alcove on the right, stairs lead up into the darkness.

Perhaps the monster is up there, perhaps not. I continue down the corridor, eventually coming to a loading bay.

I pass the remains of one of my comrades and fight the fear that that will soon be me.

The loading bay is huge, cloaked in shadows that even my IR filter doesn’t allow me to penetrate.

I know the monster is here, even before I detect the three heartbeats that confirm it.

“You’re all alone now,” calls the voice from the darkness. The monster’s voice. “The last one.”

I turn in the direction I think the voice emanates from, and fire three times, three lightening flashes in the gloom.

“So predictable, don’t you know you can’t kill me?”

The voice seems to come from the opposite direction now. I turn to look and…yes! There is the monster, stepping out of the shadows.

For the first time I see it, see the goblin like countenance. My weapon tracks but I cannot fire, fear stymies me. The monster is right, I know the stories, it cannot be killed.

And then the Oncoming Storm smiles and lifts the hat from his head. “Have you met my friend, Ace?” he asks, and too late I realise that the real danger is closer.

I turn but before I can fire everything goes dark…

* * *
Ace smashed the Dalek’s eye stalk with her baseball bat and then retreated, ducking low because she knew what was coming.

“Vision impaired! Vision impaired!” screamed the Dalek as it spun on its axis. “Exterminate! Exterminate!”

The blue death ray fired again and again, as the Dalek whirled like a crazed dervish. “Vision impaired! The Doctor must be exterminated! Vision impaired!”

Ace peered out from behind a packing crate, careful to keep her head down but unable to take her eyes off the pathetic sight of the crazed Dalek.

And then a sudden movement to her right, and she saw the Doctor push the bottom half of a dead Dalek towards the still dangerous one.

She desperately wanted to watch this, but she knew the nitro 9 planted in the Dalek hulk would make too big an explosion, so she closed her eyes and ducked behind the crate.

The explosion echoed around the room like a thunderclap inside a bell, and for an instant daylight seemed to fill the windowless room.

Then the shaking ended and it was over. She jumped to her feet and ran out to find the Doctor stood by the remains of the Dalek- what remains there were- prodding a gelatinous green blob with his umbrella, a mixture of distaste and pity in his eyes.

“Wow, that was well wicked, Professor,” said Ace, an infectious grin on her face.

The Doctor looked up and smiled, though it was a sad smile. “Come on, Ace. Let’s get back to the TARDIS and leave this place to the dead.”

Thanks!

The shame is I can't tag it as a

Dr Who story

as it might give the game away too early!!

True, though I got the gist of it, despite having watched virtually none of Doctor Who in any incarnation. Interesting. :)
