The Minority Report

Once Stephen Colbert shutters his show, The Colbert Report, to replace David Letterman, Comedy Central will fill the time with a new show, called The Minority Report, hosted by Larry Wilmore - he of the "Senior Black Correspondent" fame from The Daily Show.

The idea for “The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore,” as the show will be known, came from Mr. Stewart himself, who proposed that the 11:30 p.m. time period behind his nightly “Daily Show” was the ideal place for a new format, one that would “provide an opportunity for the underrepresented voices out there,” as Michele Ganeless, the president of Comedy Central said in an interview.

The idea is to have a panel of those voices led by Mr. Wilmore, commenting on the issues of the day — but in a comedic, scripted format, Ms. Ganeless said. “We are so excited to have a fresh idea for late night.” She emphasized that the panel would not simply address minority issues, but any and all issues, except from minority points of view.
Personally, I'm not so sure about the format of the show (I typically don't like "panel discussions" - which is one reason why I don't go out of my way to watch Bill Maher), but I've always enjoyed Wilmore's bits on The Daily Show, I think he's hilarious, and will definitely be tuning in to see what the new show is like. I'm especially keen to see the "underrepresented voices" that are highlighted in the show.

Could be pretty interesting considering how under-represented minorities tend to be in late-night television. I'll be sure to check it out. I never got too much into Colbert, honestly, it was too bogged down in shtick and over-enthusiasm by his audience. It just didn't "feel right." Be interesting to see where Larry takes his show.

I think its a great idea.

However I think John Stewart only came up with this idea because he didn't want his show to become an hour long.

This way at least we know it's going to be smart comedy and it's going to be different from the Daily Show. Unlike a certain British correspondent's HBO show which is basically the Daily Show. I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with.

And it means that for once we don't have to hear people complaining that they gave the job to another white male. ;)

Ancient Mariner, it was actually the panel discussion at the end of Politically Incorrect that I loved...Maher's stuff, was...well, whatever (i think that was before he was as bitter as he is now)

I'm not sure if Larry can carry the show, but i'm willing to check it out, especially if it's a variety of voices.

I'm glad Stewart recognized the disparity, and hopefully they'll make the show creative, so it gets its own following, and like Colbert, gets some recognition by mainstream media.
