The Menagerie

It just occurred to me that without "The Menagerie" we might have a very different view of "The Cage". Is there anyone who thinks that maybe it wouldn't even be canon if we hadn't seen "The Menagerie" (two hours I could have put to better use)?

I suspect that "The Cage" would still be canon. It is filmed Trek, and there is no reason to believe that an episode that took place before WNMHGB would not fit into the overall storyline.

As for myself, I love "The Menagerie" so I am glad they worked it in. I think that "The Cage" is a great piece of stand-alone Scifi, and "The Menagerie" is first rate Star Trek.

In the early 70's I saw GR on his dog-and-pony show, telling stories and showing the blooper reel and his black and white version of The Cage. Yes, we all knew The Menagerie, but GR personally made The Cage canon.

"The Cage" became canonical the moment the special, "The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation to the Next" aired during the hiatus between Seasons One and Two of TNG. ;)

I didn't know they'd done that.

Will they colorize the b/w footage for the remastered Cage? It's just a few seconds showing other cages in the Talosian facility.

it wasn't "colorized" - they actually found the original color copy of "the Cage"

I actually miss the original version in B&W - Malachi Throne is really different as the voice of the Keeper. Vic Perrin dubbed it in for "The Menagerie" but according to Malachi it wasn't Vic.

In my collection of the DVDs (the 2-fors), you get both the B&W version and the color version.

No real difference IMHO. It's an interesting viewing for Trek fans, remarkably advanced for its day, but ultimately uninteresting TV.

Well, not EXACTLY the B&W version...the version combining B&W footage with color footage that was processed for The Menagerie. That was how it was originally released on VHS. More of a color/B&W version.

I'm confused. Is the color version of the Cage on DVD completely in color - that is, no b/w footage at all?

I seem to remember there were a few seconds of b/w "lost footage" combined with the color in the DVD.

"The Cage" was first released on sell-thru home video. After all those decades of Roddenberry showing the surviving all b/w workprint at ST conventions, someone thought to do a combination edit, restoring all colour scenes used in "The Menagerie" while morphing back and forth to the b/w footage where only that version remained.

In the huge publicity for the video release, the guy who'd once edited "The Menagerie" for Desilu realized he still had the snipped-out colour bits on reels in his basement. The all-colour "The Cage" was restored - and premiered on TV within "The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation to the Next" special, hosted by Patrick Stewart, during the hiatus between TNG Seasons One and Two, partly filling the gap enforced by the big writers' strike.

The all-colour "The Cage" was also released to home video, and also got added into TOS syndication packages at that time.

Both the b&w/colour compile and the all-colour version are on the Season Three TOS DVD boxed set.

To watch "The Cage" as if it were the old b/w workprint, simply turn down the colour selector on your TV receiver. The only major change will be the two voices alternating for the Talosian Magistrate. (There's also a minor editing glitch in the all-colour version, if I recall. A scene cut short?)

So you're saying that Vina had a pretend pike until the real one showed up 13 years later?

Two different realities. In one, Vina got her imaginary Pike immediately. In the other, she had to wait 13 years.

In the first one, the Menagerie never happened. Who knows? Pike may even have not been injured in the accident. We don't know anything more about that reality beyond The Cage.

It could well be that the Talosians were able to (more or less) seamlessly "splice" the invalid Pike's thoughts directly into Vina's fantasy of Pike...though she'd probably eventually realize the difference since her version of Pike wouldn't have REALLY been actively contributing to the illusion. :)

IIRC, Pike's line to Vina, during the picnic scene, something like, "You were like a wild little animal," is snipped from the all-color DVD version.
