The Maple Leaf Lounge

Ottawa Comic Con and Aero Gatineau are the same weekend this year. That will be a hell of a couple of days.

Airshow tickets go on sale Thursday. I'm buying mine for Sat and will pick up comic con for Fri or Sun depending on guests and their appearance days.

First they took all our manufacturing jobs, now we find out all the Parliament Hill cats went to Mexico too! Damn NAFTA!

Speaking of Tim Hortons, their latest new product is... flatbread pizza? Is it just me or does it feel rather random? I expect it to go as well as McDonald's foray into pizza decades ago. Pizza is never on my mind when I go to a Tim Hortons. It's just about about the last kind of thing I'd think of seeing there. So, it kind of makes me wonder what kind of decision lead to that.

Tim Hortons always comes out with so many items, that it's hard to keep track of them. And it seems that just as I get to something I really like, they either remove it from the menu or change it too much. That happened with the Loaded wraps. When they first came out, they were amazing with large chunks of chicken. Now the chicken is a mush and they aren't nearly as good.

I have to admit, that one left me scratching my head a little bit too. I haven't tried it, but some people who have, have said that they liked it.

Have they gotten rid of real eggs on all their breakfast sandwiches? Last time I was in a Tims I had one and all it had was that spongy white crap. I could barely eat the damn thing. :barf:

Yeah, I've heard reports that they're good too, but given that to make them require new equipment, ie new pizza ovens according to a news report I saw, it strikes me as an expensive gamble. And it's one that I doubt every franchisee would be willing to put money into. Franchisees are already complaining about the cost of having to constantly upgrade and remodel their restauraunts, and given how random the addition of pizzas feel like, it feels like a tough ask on the part of corporate, given that I doubt it will last long, with their history of menu items coming and going quickly.

Remember a few years back when Tim's said they were going to reduce the menu and get back to basics?

I think of that every time they do a new stunt like this

That's what I thought about when I first heard of the pizza. Seriously, I feel they need to slow down a bit with the product releases. There are the standard menu items including some that they've introduced that have become part of the basic menu, and then there are just so many of the timed exclusives. Then combine that with the relatively recent digital menu boards that cycle every 5 seconds, and it's such a confusing place to order from. And pizza feels like such a stretch to think it would ever become a standard part of their menu. For what started as a place offering coffee and donuts, pizza? Sandwhiches, soups and wraps are one thing. But adding pizza feels as odd as a pizzeria adding donuts and coffee to their menu.

So some random pixels with a maple leaf slapped on is a logo now?

Not to be really rude, but this quote straight from DND Communications...

""The icon was developed without additional funds or involvement of external companies," said Tétreault. "It was developed by DND's internal graphic design team, and this icon comes at zero expense to the taxpayer.""

...um, well, that's eminently believable. Again, I don't want to be rude (being Canadian and all) but I think it's very, very, very evident that no one was consulted on this and it was done with tenuous inspiration, zero budget, no strategy or design talent and probably a time crunch to boot. It's not great. Hope they don't try to create similar 'successes' for the navy and Air Force.

I've never personally been to Canada, but some of my favorite celebrities originally hail from there. Jim Carrey, Stephen Amell, Hayden Christensen, Nathan Fillion, Victor Garber, Elias Koteas, Kristin Kreuk, Martin Short, Howie Mandel, Catherine O'Hara, Christopher Plummer, Anna Paquin, Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Cobie Smulders, Donald & Kiefer Sutherland, Chad Kroeger, Bryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, Shania Twain, Shawn & Aaron Ashmore, Emily VanCamp, Michael J. Fox, and Paula Abdul...all proud Canadians.

Serial killer Robert Pickton in critical condition after prison assault

Convicted B.C. serial killer Robert Pickton has been hospitalized and is in critical condition after he was assaulted in prison on Sunday.

The Correctional Services of Canada (CSC) confirmed in a statement Tuesday that Pickton was the victim of a major assault at the maximum-security Port-Cartier Institution in Quebec.

Pickton was taken to a hospital for treatment. The incident did not involve staff, according to the CSC.

Not gonna lie. I'm having a hard time mustering any kind of sympathy whatsoever.

the cbc had an article yesterday on Canada Post's crappy delivery service where parcels are carded than being dropped off despite being home.

low and behold what happens today?

fuckwit cards a parcel I was expecting but not surprised at that.

Happened the same with the last parcel I expected from them - it was memory modules so bought on E-bay and with expedited delivery. Was small and would have fitted in my mailbox box without a problem.

Makes life hard for the staff who work the postal outlets in Shoppers etc cos they have to take the brunt of people's anger cos Canada Post can't do it's fucking job then wonders why no-one wants to use it's service.
