The Maple Leaf Lounge

Ahh ok, that explains it! Sorry for jumping ahead. I don't know if you also have the data, but it would be interesting to see the airlines that serve those routes.

I've been cobbling this together as I go, not really setting up a citations list yet, and I should have done so long ago.

Anyone else watching the game? I have it on in the background as I work. Quite the start. Don't want to post more details in case people are watching on demand later after work.

I"m not much of a football fan, so no. But I did go out to dinner at a restauraunt on Sunday when the Grey Cup began, and I was glad I had a reservation because it was very busy due to the Grey Cup.

that reminds me of the last time I was in Toronto...it was May '19 and there was an NBA game going on, Raptors vs. Bucks. I'd just checked into my hotel and I was eating at the Boston Pizza (near the Skydome) and it was FUCKING.LOUD. Probably just as loud as it was at the arena. Complete with "referee sucks" calls and everything!

What can I say, we Canadians can be loud!

That reminds me, several years ago, we went to Ottawa and it turned out Ottawa was one of the cities hosting the Women's FIFA world cup, and it was quite a fun experience seeing and interacting with all these international players in the breakfast lounge of our hotel. This was in 2015.

And it seems that the United (?) Conservative Party of Alberta has taken some of the worst lessons possible from the Parti Québecois of late, in my opinion.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/alberta-sovereignty-act-analysis-wherry-1.6671036

the right-wing in this country and hit a new level of stupid.

not sure that some people fully comprehend just what powers this would give - not the Alberta legislature but to the cabinet it's self (so they could change things without the consent of the parliament).

must be very confident of winning the election because these powers would then exist for the ndp if notley becomes premier next May.

I wonder how long it will be take before there law is challenged in the courts but the united facist party would probably choose the ignore the ruling anyway.

and speaking of right-wing stupid, on my msn news feed earlier today was a piece from fox news about trudeau is tyrannt. Never mind the they've got the likes of tucker carlson frequently polishing the apples of orban and putin.

The new firearms act HURTS the Province of Alberta! We are HURT!! DAMAGED!! We're not playing with you anymore!

they've been shitty since trudeau first became P.M.

and that's all it is - petty politics.

take away gun control and the carbon tax (which the province was given the option to take it's own steps) and things haven't changed much from when harper and co ran the show (kenney was fine with the transfer payments then).

I'm in Quebec this weekend and a gun company is advertising a 10% discount on firearms in protest of the new legislation, with the promo code "Poly", days before the Polytechnique anniversary....

iimmoral scum is a good description of the gun makers and the gun lobby.

I'm surprise this would happen on Canadian soil. Shame on the gun company. :wtf: This is the kind of thing I'd expect south of the border, but not here. We're better than that.

Our homegrown reactionaries are determined to ensure that we will never be better than that, I fear.

That's part of the point of organizing the Convoy Crowd, the occupation of Saint Brigid's by the self-proclaimed "United People", the campaigns against 2SLGBTQ+ peoples' rights, and now this firearm-marketing scheme.

Agree 100%. That's just disgusting. I'd say they should be ashamed of themselves, but they obviously have no shame.

But this... I just can't agree with this. As @DEWLine points out, recent events have objectively proven that we are not better than that. This seemingly widespread notion that Canadians as a whole are somehow morally superior to our American neighbours is something we need to start disabusing ourselves of, quickly. You will find all ends of the spectrum on both sides of the border.

Noting that it's been almost five years since The Rick Mercer Report went off the air on TV. Mercer himself will be interviewed today by Piya Chattopadhyay for The Sunday Magazine on CBC Radio One about the changes in the political/cultural landscape that he's seen in that time. That will be interesting.

Has it really been that long? Wow. It feels like he's been a permanent fixture on TV. I remember him going way back to CODCO. Then when This Hour Has 22 Minutes started, many of the same actors, characters and skits carried over, and I think it might have even been with the same production crew. Then Mercer left the show and started Rick Mercer's Monday Report, eventually morping into Rick Mercer Report when it changed days.

I saw him in a movie cameo recently, which was interesting because it was this big hollywood movie and not a Canadian one, so when he showed up it was so unexpected, I couldn't help but notice who it was.

You know, I certainly wasn't intending for it to sound divisive, and I wasn't trying to imply anything. I was just hoping to strike a more hopeful tone overall, ie in the sense of wishing humanity would be better than that. But then we see things like what the gun company are doing that run contrary that constantly dispel that illusion. Maybe I should have worded it differently. I'm not always the greatest at expressing things. So, I'm sorry if I struck a nerve.

As an American, I didn't take any offense at it. What you said was absolutely true.
