The Legend Of Korra

Not a bad little show. I just started this and finished book 1 and 2. Since it's only two dvds per volume it's nice to just chill in the evening and binge a disk.

I like all the characters but am finding some a little grating like Mako's brother and to an extent Korra. She's the star but she can be a bit annoying. Love the 3 kids they are funny, and not quite what I expected. Asami was done to bring in the male and female viewers of course and they made her hot for that reason. Spirits was a good series but the ending 3 episodes wow, you could do a drinking game with the number of times Tenzin said "spirit" which I guess is part of the episode but it kind of grated a bit. But so far enjoying this little show. It's fun

It’s a great show.
And in some respects surpassing Avatar - The last Airbender even, imo.
Asami is probably morphing into one of your favorite characters eventually.

Do the thing, Ju Lee!

Poor Ju Lee.... But they seemed joined at the hip anyway.

Asami Sato is good but I think she was in there to attract viewers. I like her but I like the banter more. My favourites are the 3 kids they are just funny. I thought I'd like Korra but I don't that much.

Asami looks that way because 1) to distinguish her from Korra's more athletic, tomboyish silhouette, and 2) she was originally conceived as a honeytrap working with the equalists. They ended up liking the character so much they decided to keep her around and make her an innocent party.

Good thing too, she's easily the most interesting character on the show.

I loved Legend of Korra. I really liked all of the characters and loved the worldbuilding.
"Do the thing Ju Lee", is one of my favorite lines.
As an animal person I got a big kick out of Pabu, and Naga.
I was pretty happy with how they connected it to The Last Airbender, there was enough there to solidly set it in that world, but not so much that it overwhelmed what made the show unique.

"Do the thing Ju Lee" is one of my favourite lines too and Varric kind of has this whole Jeff Goldblum / Ian Malcolm vibe going for me when watching the show.

Legend of Korra is such an awesome show and i know it's heresy but i think it's better than Avatar ( though i have to mention that i have not seen the entire Avatar show).

The two parter in season 2 showing the origins of the Avatar with its different and distinct art style was one of the best parts of the show but as the show progresses it only gets better.

I am such a fan of the show that i even bought a Pro Bending boardgame via Kickstarter, that has many teams as miniatures including the famous Fire Ferrets :D

That sounds cool. I just finished season 3 and that was great. Do not understand why Nikelodeon canceled it in the middle of season 3. Thank goodness the dvds have all the episodes.

If you want to see what happens next there are the comics, which are written by one of the showrunners. So far there have been two trilogies, Turf Wars, and Ruins of the Empire. Turf Wars actually picks right up after the last shot of the last episode.

I have the box set which had all of season 3 and 4 episodes... Just odd that they made all the episodes but never aired the final half of season 3 and season 4.

I'll have more to say later as I process

I completely forgot that the last season and a half was just online, not on TV.:brickwall:

Yeah there are 4 full seasons in the set just if you watched via Nikelodeon they cut off the whole of the last season and half of season 3. The set is still out there, not sure of overseas prices I am in Australia.

OK edited here: More thoughts

The Legend Of Korra

Some more of my thoughts.

OK I went into this right off the bat without seeing the previous series so it was just this series I am basing all my thoughts on so if anything I say sounds wrong it's just based off what I have seen so far and my own personal opinions / thoughts.

First off I have finished the first 3 seasons and the final one begins tonight. So far I really, really have enjoyed the run. Season 1 to me felt the best so far and it had a good story that ran the whole way through with Amon and the Equalists. That was a cool story and nice payoff with the ending of that. Didn't catch on till the end that Amon himself was some kind of bender. I mean well he had to be with the way he could take away people's powers but at first it didn't really click. I had first thought there was some other kind of explanation, or that he had outside help from Asami's father somehow from his company.

It's an interesting world they have created, not quite Earth though the planet they are on is called Earth. They seem to have a lot of things we would be familiar with like cities, paved roads, and even cars. I love the car Asami drives, that's a cool car. They even have jeeps that look more or less like jeeps in our world so it's not that far off. They have giant airships, and I wish we had giant airships like that today of a similar size. Airships are very cool. But yes the world they created is fantastic and they haven't really gone too far over the top with that setting, and it fits in with the story they are trying to tell.

Season 2 was good too with the theme of spirits, though they amped up the threat from season 1 to world ending, which seems to be the thing a lot of TV shows do to keep people watching. I mean I get it you have to write a weekly show that keeps people hooked so you have to have some kind of ongoing story but really must everything be world ending or fantastically over the top evil that means some huge fight in the last 2 episodes to resolve the problem that started in episode 1? Every genre show seems to do it but I guess that's why we keep watching.

However having said that I liked season 2 as well but maybe not as much as the first season, that one for me will be the best. Moving onto season 3 well that was a change of pace and it seemed less stressful then the previous two seasons, but still there was a larger threat which was revealed later in the season with the bald guy wanting to destroy Korra and destroy any kind of government, and very nearly did destroy Korra, but as our plucky lead character I knew somehow she would survive I cannot lie I liked all 3 seasons and what did that for me was the writing and dialog. Loved all the banter between characters and stuff that happens in the background that isn't connected to the main story.

As for favourite characters I'm not going with Korra. I liked the three kids, Suyin Beifong and her sister Lin Beifong, Asami, and Bolin. I also liked Varrick who for some reason I can't fathom kept making me think of Ian Malcolm played by Jeff Goldlum, and his sidekick Zhu Li. I also liked Kya, and Jinora, though I wish she had been older because as a kid it just doesn't work for me that she is as smart as she is, that just doesn't work for me when watching the show.

So far this show is a solid 8/10 for me. I like the thought of people being able to bend elements to their will so does this make people in this world elementals of some kind, though some of the explanations you get in the show don't really help make sense of that, but I like that there are different kinds of benders, and there is this whole eastern mysticism mixed into the story to explain everything.

Yeah, I loved the whole Avatar world, and I know you didn't watch The Last Airbender, but as someone who watched at least some of both shows, it's was really cool seeing how the world evolved between the two shows.
I would love to get another series at some point, that brings us forward again, to something closer to the modern day, just to see that evolution continue.
I also got a kick out of some of the crazy mashup animals that they introduced over the series.

The Avatar is the most powerful bender on the planet, so it's pretty much inevitable that they'd face some pretty big threats.

One of the things I loved about the benders, was how each type of bending was based around a different form of martial arts.

Hey good points there @JD but you manged to wrap your post in quotes and quoted yourself :)

I noticed the whole martial arts thing too and liked that. A lot of karate style moves and things I have done myself there so it was neat sing that but done in a fantastical way.

Yeah, when they were developing ATLA they consulted with a few different masters to develop distinct styles of Kung Fu for each element. IIRC it's Tai Chi for water, Hung Ga for earth, Northern Shaolin for fire, and Bagua for air. On top of that I think they got a specialist who knows a very particular style meant for blind fighters, just for Toph's style, with the distinct "palms up" stance.

I assume for Korra they took some cues from western martial arts for certain elements. MMA, kickboxing etc. for the pro-bending style.

OK Season 4 was also good, but I don't think it was great. For me season 1 was the best and 3. But some of the humor in season 4 was good. I like that they didn't take themselves seriously at all and that was fun. The episode Remembrances was a really fun episode and they broke a bit of 4th wall there with all the circles of people's heads popping into the conversation. I enjoyed that. The story with Kuvira was good, but on the whole not great. It felt a little like things we had seen before in other shows.

I go back to my previous thought where I said genre shows have on fatal flaw, and that is that they continually have to keep upping the stakes every season to keep the characters busy or on their toes. Wouldn't it be cool if a show just did a few episodes where nothing terribly exciting happens and we just have fun for a while with no world ending threats for a break. I wish they would do that but with shows like this I don't think you can or people drift out and lose interest. So if I had to rate the series and the seasons as a whole here's how I'd do that.

Series 8/10

Season 1 7.5/10
Season 2 7/10
Season 3 6/10
Season 4 7/10

And those are my thoughts on The Legend Of Korra.

You really should watch ATLA if only for this reason, and it's a good one. I liked Kora for its own reasons, it was its own show. Avatar was really something else entirely.

The real hero of Avatar was Katara. No one will ever convince me otherwise.
