The Least Disliked Romance-Of-The-Week

Time for an episode elimination game about the genre that I think we can all agree Trek has ALWAYS done best: Romance Of The Week!

THE RULES. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below is a list of ROTW episodes from TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. Eliminate your least favorite or the one you deem the 'worst.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

WAIT 4 HOURS and leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

PLEASE NOTE THE ABOVE RULE CHANGE: The games have been running a bit fast, so adding a time element this round to slow it down...

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel they would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

As with most of these other themes, ROTW has expressed itself in a wide variety of ways over the life of the franchise. Compiling the list, I started to feel like I was sitting in a jury box on "Star Trek: SVU" -- Trek has mixed romance and mind-control/alien possession A LOT, and closed many of those eps with the suggestion that maybe it wasn't really the external influence causing their behavior, maybe they SECRETLY had these feelings -- so figuring out which of those episodes belonged and which should be excluded was tricky.

I ultimately settled on excluding anything where one half of the "romance" is an alien trying to seduce the other character so they can use them as food ("Sub Rosa", "Man Of The People", "The Muse", "Favorite Son"), because those never felt consenting. But if our character seemed left in a wistful place of "we might have been amazing together, if you weren't an evil alien queen!", those would stay. Episodes about long-running pairings they played with multiple times were also left off ("His Way", "Blood Fever", "Data's Day", "Ferengi Love Songs", etc). The few two-parters with ROTW elements were listed as single items. Romances between one-off guest characters were excluded, but recurring characters that got ROTW's made it on.

The back and forthing with this one was a lot of fun, though it did take a lot of figuring out on this one. Kudos to Sakonna for some creative thoughts on several matters. (And you already know what my first elimination will be. )

I'll get the ball rolling with "Cost Of Living". The romance, which was Lwaxana's upcoming marriage, felt like such a minor thing in the episode I feel it doesn't deserve to be called a romance of the week.

"Unforgettable" was literally designed to have no lasting impact -- not that most of these did, but here the intent was just a little too blatant. The episode was actually self-resetting. Add in the utter lack of chemistry between Beltran and Madsen, and you hit depths of fail rarely plumbed.

Interesting. It didn't strike me as belonging because of the backstory nature of the Jennifer material, but I think I may have been viewing it in too linear a way. It does tell the whole story of their romance in one episode, and it is the only time we see (Prime Universe) Jennifer. It's early enough in the game, so adding "Emissary" to the list below.

We disagreed on whether Zefram Cochrane counted as a recurring character or not. I admit "Metamorphosis" Cochrane doesn't exactly fit seamlessly with James Cromwell Cochrane.

Meanwhile, I am going to eliminate "The Way To Eden." Turns out, I had never seen this episode before watching it a few days ago, to see if it qualified for this list. It's terrible! My god! Why does it have so many bad songs?!? What is the point of them? The plot is so sloppy and lazily constructed. And the Herbert chanting. The whole thing is just so stupid.

This is my favourite episode to eliminate, I'd have done it myself if I'd have been paying attention.

I wouldn't consider Jennifer Sisko a ROTW being as she was actually married to Sisko. It's not the same. Also Mirror Jennifer popped up a couple of times later in the run.

Right, the list. Aquiel is gone! It's a terrible episode, and it sticks out like a sore thumb in the same season we get the far superior Lessons.

But Jennifer is arguably a recurring presence in Sisko's life. Not some one-shot romance-of-the-week that is never mentioned again.

I did also include longer relationships in cases where the audience only experiences the story in the defined parameters of one episode ("The Inner Light", "11:59", "Homestead", maybe "Rejoined" depending on how you look at it). It could definitely go either way, but since Jennifer is dead at this point and their relationship progresses no further beyond "Emissary", it does fit those parameters.

But it is definitely gray, the whole thing is a bit of a subjective exercise in "what is ROTW in a Star Trek context?" and figuring out how to draw those lines -- maybe I'll lob them all off when re-running the list in the future.

I wouldn't consider Jennifer Sisko a ROTW being as she was actually married to Sisko. It's not the same. Also Mirror Jennifer popped up a couple of times later in the run.

I see Prime Jennifer and Mirror Jennifer as distinct and parts of different (though related) stories/relationships (I have "Resurrection" on as a ROTW with MU Bareil, but nothing with Kira & Prime Bareil, for example).

Meanwhile, eliminating "A Simple Investigation." I always thought this was an insane missed opportunity -- a few episodes earlier, this could have been THE great installment of the Odo-becomes-human arc. It would make a lot of sense for newly human Odo to have this kind of fling, and it would invest a lot of poignancy, Odo exploring the humanoid behaviors he has previously disdained and being swept away by it. But placing it right after he becomes a shapeshifter again just makes it feel very... why?

And there is no great ep of the Odo-becomes-human arc! They needed to do more with that. It could have been this!
