The Least Disliked Episode 2023: ENT Season 4

BlueStuff

Rear Admiral
Our addictive biyearly game of rapid elimination returns - now with more shows than ever. It's generally a lot of fun, providing a chance to mentally revisit those episodes you may not have thought about in a while. With that in mind, why not play again?

So, here's the game. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. I'll provide a list of the episodes for each season and you need to eliminate your least favourite or the one you deem the 'worst.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed. Finally, leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.
Pretty simple. Enjoy! :bolian:

First Blood.

These Are the Voyages is the worst finale that they could have come up with. Shoehorning TNG characters into ENT's finale might have been interesting if it was a one-off episode or something, but not their finale.

Don't get me started on the lack of Archer's speech at the end of the episode, especially after poor Trip died in a hokey way just to make sure Archer would make his speech. :wtf:

I am SOOOO GLAD that "THESE ARE THE VOYAGES..." was killed first. Die! Die! DIE!!!!! DIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

My first pick now for this season is "STORM FRONT".

I am very happy that the first thing Manny Coto did was to rid the show of the Temporal Cold War, and am eternally grateful that he did.

But it was resolved in the second part, sadly. Instead of just one episode. But given how the budget for all episodes this season was slashed almost in half, I get why they split it into two parts.

(Ironically, it was likely a factor in how they told the stories this year, with the mini-arcs and two-parters. Which was why this season was the show's best. There's something to be said about limitations forcing creativity.)

I'll finish "Storm Front" off.

Honestly, I'd have been happy starting season 4 back in the "present" with two lines of dialogue tossing it all away. "What a relief that we finally ended the Temporal Cold War and got back to our own time! And I can't believe Future Guy was...."

That was literally the ONE question of the TCW that interested me -- who is Future Guy? -- and this HUGE DRAWN OUT TWO-PARTER doesn't even resolve that!

How some of you all feel about the Temporal Cold War is what I think about the Mirror universe every single time it appears after the first Kirk encounter. The cartoonish preposterousness of it is the only part which survives and is less and less fun every time they trot it out. It doesn’t even change to multiple universes apparently. I relish removing In a Mirror, Darkly I.

The prevailing sentiment often seems to be that "Terra Prime" serves well as a series finale, but it's not a view I'm able to share. It really feels like an episode of television produced by people who know they've been cancelled, the spark is not there. And the final beat being crying over a dead baby? I will actually take TATV over that!

It's interesting, I'm realizing a lot of my feelings about Enterprise are shaped by only watching the majority of it many years after the fact, when I already had some degree of awareness on fanbase sentiment for every single episode. I grasp now why the Xindi arc is so much more fulfilling coming immediately after season 2, as compared to after 15 years of praise.

I like all the remaining episodes. I really do. Season 4 was this show's best. (A statement that seems to be true of all Berman era shows... season 4 of TNG and VGR were the most consistently good seasons of those shows and DS9 season 4 was the closest to a perfect season the franchise ever got.)

However, I must vote. Well, I don't have to vote, but I feel compelled to since I already took out two episodes.

So my next elimination is "AFFLICTION".

I may be in the minority when I say I really liked that the writers were able to explain the Klingon difference of TOS and later movies/shows. It was creative, and a nice nod to "TRIALS AND TRIBBLE-ATIONS" in making both O'Brien and Bashir being right with what they thought.

I just like the story/plot of the other arcs/episodes more.

One more vote before work. I too enjoy all these episodes so it is a tougher choice. But I’m going with the Forge. I like it and Soval gets so much more interesting. But as the first episode of the arc it’s more story setting than anything and I really just like the others more. My only criticism of it is that Soval tells Archer not to trust the evidence, they find out T’Pol’s mother is with the group, Archer himself seems skeptical of what the Vulcans are saying…and then he still seems totally committed to the idea that it is the Syrrannites when he heads off to encounter them. Would have made more sense if he was seeking them out because he didn’t believe it at that point.

I'll get rid of the other part of the Klingon story, and say goodbye to Divergence. Definitely some interesting character moments throughout, but the explanation of the difference between TOS and present-day Klingons was just unnecessary.

I will put "AWAKENING" to sleep.

Sakonna was right... that cave set was a little suffocating. (But as I said before, such things were needed to amortize the costs of each episode by making the stories arcs instead of one-offs. It's not a coincidence that 3 of the 5 standalones this season took place almost entirely on the Enterprise.)

Hard choices. All great ones.

I will take out "DEMONS" because I just can't bring myself to takimg out a Brent Spiner episode.

(For now, anyway.)

Luckily, his very nature precludes ambition so he wouldn’t hold it against you ;)

I’m going to take out Observer Effect. A great episode I just think the others are greater. Still, single best moment for Travis is when he isn’t Travis.
