The Least Disliked Episode 2023: ENT Season 1

BlueStuff

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Our addictive biyearly game of rapid elimination returns - now with more shows than ever. It's generally a lot of fun, providing a chance to mentally revisit those episodes you may not have thought about in a while. With that in mind, why not play again?

So, here's the game. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. I'll provide a list of the episodes for each season and you need to eliminate your least favourite or the one you deem the 'worst.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed. Finally, leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.
Pretty simple. Enjoy! :bolian:

First pick! I'm spoilt for choice. At least the first season wasn't as bad as the dreaded second and also had the ongoing conflict between Earth and Vulcan peppered throughout it.

Terra Nova was a particularly mediocre episode with no redeeming aspects, so it's the first pick.

Broken Bow because it made me dislike Archer and Trip right away, if it hadn't been for T'Pol babysitting them they would have screwed everything up. I also wasn't a fan of the klingons being involved and how first contact with themes portrayed, a single klingon crashing into a cornfield and getting shit by a dumb hick is not how I imagined it.

Unexpected is a pretty stupid episode, and it features a holodeck. Not the best use of your imagination there guys, just a few episodes in your prequel.

Funny how each of the ones already eliminated are exactly ones I'd pick first.

My first vote is "FUSION".

I think this made Archer look bad to his crew. His XO is basically raped, and his action? Archer gets him mad and has him kicked off the Enterprise. How about putting him in lockdown until you can get a Vulcan ship to pick his ass up and send him to prison? By not doing something, he made it look like others can do whatever they want with the crew, and that's a poor look on a leader. It's the same reason why crime is so high in Portland, San Francisco, Chicago, and other cities where criminals aren't actually prosecuted... lack of consequences is just another way of giving permission to break the law.

I’m removing Two Days and Two Nights. I don’t hate it but it is a bit too goofy and disorganized. Since the nature of Enterprise is people learning to do their jobs I think adding in making them look sillier wasn’t helpful in season 1. It played into the screwball “aw schucks” problem Enterprise sometimes had in establishing their characters as professionals. Also, Micheal Dorn just needs to stay away from Risa.

Shran is a legend, but the episode Shadows of P'Jem unfortunately, is not. The Andorian Incident deserved a better follow-up than a boring hostage plot. and Archer's face falling on T'Pol's breasts in an attempt to escape. High school humour in a desperate attempt for ratings?

Taking out "COLD FRONT".

Because I HATED the Temporal Cold War. (It's the one thing from the show I would change/eliminate. Even before the awful theme song.)

Shockwave I - like @Farscape One I'm not a fan of the temporal cold war. Like T'Pol and the Vulcan Science Institute, I really don't like time travel.

Rogue Planet is another mediocre episode, so it's gone. It's one of those I fell asleep to on first viewing, but then by the time I saw it again, I wished I'd fallen asleep that time too.

Fortunate Son. Archer basically lets off a bunch of pirates who have been terrorizing the freighter crews by shaking his finger at them.

Also, who taught those Nausicans how to fight? The way they were bunched up, a single World War I era grenade, thrown into their midst, would have turned them into cat food.

Withholding a cure which you have is no less "playing God" than using it would be, and more people end up dead; I can't see that as the better option. I hate Prime Directive episodes in which our protagonists use the principle of non-interference to talk themselves out of saving lives, and "Dear Doctor" is near enough to the same thing.

I think Enterprise doesn’t get enough credit for some of the creative ideas it has about early mission oversights. I like the concept and the acting is well played in parts but I’m removing Strange New Worlds because I find it a chore of an episode. It would work better if it were the sort of show where the stakes were higher that in their delusion they did irreparable harm they had to live with. But I just get impatient for the cure because they won’t.

Desert Crossing is another boring episode, so it's gone. There are some interesting moments when Archer and Trip visit the planet, but it's lost in a dull story.

Also re-removed Rogue Planet from the list as I removed it earlier, but it's reappeared. Die Rogue Planet, die!

I always think it's funny when they have a rogue planet... and it's habitable. Without a sun to warm them, planets turn into frozen balls of rock. Think Pluto, just bigger.

Actually, a rogue planet could stay warm enough for life for a very long time. During an early stage of planet formation, planets have very thick atmospheres, which are mostly destroyed by radiation from their stars - a rogue planet that left early enough wouldn't have lost a lot of its atmosphere that way. A planet with a large moon would have tidal heating. A rogue planet the size of Jupiter could have a moon like Io that has volcanic activity because of the gravitational forces - that could be enough to keep the moon warm enough to sustain life for a long time.

I like "Sleeping Dogs" - once I'd accepted that the Klingons were going to be on Enterprise a bit earlier than I thought they made contact with humans - it's quite a fun episode, but there are others on this list that are better either for character development (I love Hoshi's character arc this season) or that are more important to the overall show storyline.
