The Last Jedi Box Office discussion thread

There is a reason Disney has consolidated their resources on the MCU, Star Wars, live action remakes of their animated classics and POTC (to a lesser extent).

For every success, there is a:
Lone Ranger
Tomorrowland
John Carter
Prince of Persia
Mars Needs Moms
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Alice Through The Looking Glass
Finest Hours

Even your middle of the road successes like Tron Legacy, Oz The Great and Powerful and the first two Narnia movies were considered disappointments by the House of Mouse. Tron Legacy was supposed to be a 3/4 of a billion dollar movie. While Oz and the 2 Narnia movies were supposed to do Harry Potter numbers at the BO. The only one that came close was Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe at $745 million.

Franchise IPs are the name of the game now. I suspect Disney's shareholder's want as little risk to the portfolio as possible.
Yup and the reason why such things are preferable from a financial standpoint is that the thing doesn't sink or swim based on the box office, it's supported by a *huge* merchandise revenue stream. It won't even matter if the Solo movie looses them money because they'll still sell toys, t-shirts, lunch boxes and lego sets by the truck load. A huge box office take is nice of course, but it's not the point of the exercise.

Yeah, they're so mad at Johnson.
Yup, so mad that they gave him a whole new trilogy to make so that he could sit there and think about what he did! ;)

And you are absolutely wrong. The PRC's glorification of the Taiping as well as trying to co-opt the early Nationalists like Sun seems to show the opposite.

No, the previous poster's right; this kind of rebellion's not the kind they want to see happen, since the one shown in the movies is against a centralized totalitarian government, and it probably hits too close to home for the CPC (Communist Party Of China) to be shown.

John Carter led to several people losing their jobs...
This is too easy...

John Carter
Worldwide gross: 284 million
Only 79 million in the U.S

The Last Jedi
Worldwide gross: 1.3 Billion.
611 million in the U.S

BIG difference.

By the way, both Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi made far less than A New Hope did. Guess those were flops too.

Flop.

if Disney fired Rion Johnson I am sure there are plenty of other studios who will line up to sign a director who did 1.3 billion dollar box office movie. I don't think Rion Johnson is worried if he is fired.

Yeah but to be fair the majority of the movie going public hasn't been watching what the academy has been selling for some time now.

Some of those best picture nominees actually look good this time around though.

Actually pretty awful for a mainline Star Wars story, which is the last ever movie starring Carrie Fisher.
It is only exceeded by TFA - which was the first new SW film in almost 20 years (and the first in over 30 years starring members of the original cast).
It finished in the top 10 all time... that's also not too shabby.
