The Last Jedi Box Office discussion thread

It's sad it's been such a huge flop.

Oh look, Didny stock is in a free-fall.

Bob Iger better start working on his resume.

I'm seeing a lot of advertising for the movie; Not just the trailers, but a Nissan commerical, segments on local news (at least in Los Angeles), etc... Plus the fact that it's a new Star Wars movie, with Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill being a big part of it... So I think that will get a lot of butts in theater seats opening weekend. Now whether the movie is the next Empire Strikes Back or the next Phantom Menace will determine how it does after.

I'm thinking that if the movie is great, it will match or beat TFA in all categories:
$240M+ for opening weekend. $900M+ domestic/$2B+ worldwide

If the is not so good:
$220M opening weekend, $600M domestic/$1.2B worldwide

If the movie is somewhere in-between:
$230M opening weekend, $750 domestic/$1.5B worldwide

Regardless, this movie's going to make a cr@p ton of money...

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is now merely the third fastest grossing movie of all time."

Only in fandom land does such a benchmark equal failure...:wtf:

Obviously people calling it a flop or a failure are being ridiculous, but the film is coming in a bit below expectations. I doubt that Disney is thrilled about a $700 million drop from Force Awakens. The mixed reception to the film probably reduced repeating viewings from hardcore fans and scared away some of the general audience. The dour tone probably didn't help with families either. I'd imagine Disney is going to encourage Abrams to make the next film a bit more fun to course correct.

So yeah, the movie is a huge success, but there's lots of room for nuance there.

Four Oscars nominations, though all 4 are the "lesser" categories. Unlikely to affect box office in any way.

What more do people want from the box office? Seriously? If the film isn't for you, it isn't for you. But, that doesn't make it a "flop" or anything like that. Nobody is getting fired at Disney for TLJ's performance.

700 million below the original dude. That's definitely something to get fired over. This movie is a very serious flop.

I know the news coming out of LucasFilm is that Rian Johnson is starting his new trilogy, but I would be SHOCKED if he really gets to make it. I am pretty sure they might keep him as a figurehead, but nobody other than JJ will ever get to direct Star Wars again.

So, I should take your word over Disney's? Got it.

Which is all that matters. If they hit their forecast it is not a loss. That, and YoY growth.
