The Last Jedi Box Office discussion thread

Isn't it obvious?

Now, now no spoilers ;)

The most obvious one I keep seeing on the net is the casting of Kelly Marie Tran despite the fact she's a born n bread American from California and her parents are Vietnamese.

Disney thought that the Chinese are stupid and would go see anyone who looked Asian. They were wrong.

You have no evidence for that but your own belief and even if that was true then why not just cast a Chinese actress or at least someone of Chinese descent...

Thank you for playing this round of racial profiling and next week we will discuss why was John Boyega casted...

Spoilers, he impressed in his audition.

Star Wars (TLJ) seems to do fairly well domestically (USA). It is currently 6th highest grossing film in the United States over The Dark Knight and under MArvel's The Avengers.

But then Star Wars seems to not do as well internationally as other films, With 40-50% of its gross being domestic, rather than the likes of Avatar or Age of Ultron were basically two-thirds or more of the gross is from the international market.

You fancy explaining the Ethnic pandering line? while I grab my popcorn...
Isn't it obvious?
Asian-Americans have historically been the most underrepresented group in big Hollywood movies and I can only thank Kathleen Kennedy and Co. for doing something about that. Especially after that inexcusable disgrace that was Ghost in the Shell.

As for ethnic pandering, I call bullshit. Of all the big Hollywood blockbusters that made serious bank in China in 2017, Spider-Man Homecoming was the only one that featured a prominent Asian character.

Are we talking about Rose? I am not sure how casting a Vietnamese-American actress is suppose to pander to a Chinese audience unless one thinks all "Asians" are homogeneous and that an audience in China would have similar views on race as Americans.

That's what Disney thought and they are wrong.

Not to derail the thread, but Major was not Asian in the manga. That is directly stated and the film follows this perfectly.

Have you actually seen the movie? It's literally Asian woman's brain in a white woman's robotic body. It couldn't be more offensive if Trump himself wrote it.

Couldn't it have just been that we they decided to include an Asian main character because they had been rather underrepresented in the franchise up to this point?

Yes - they wanted the publicity from adding an Asian character. I suppose I could be wrong about them thinking that this would affect box office in China. As admit it damn it, I was wrong, I was wronggggggggg.

Yes, I saw the movie and that's exactly how the manga is. It is stated that while she has an Asian name, her body is not.

And in the manga, the Major’s ‘body’ is certainly given plenty of focus.

(If anyone is ever confused about the fine line between nudity and exploitation, one quick look at the various incarnations of GiTS will clear it right up.)

Sacrilege it may be, the manga is possibly the worst version of GiTS. Something being in it, does not mean that thing is good. And any good adaptation is supposed to drop shit that probably won’t work for it.

*Asian-American

That isn't to say I defend the casting choice, just that most(all?) of the fury seems to be coming from this side of the pacific.

Japanese audiences didn't give two shits about the casting, or the movie in general for that matter. But that's hardly even relevant, this entire discussion stemmed from my remark about Asian Americans being underrepresented in Hollywood.
