The Krotons

Pindar

Just watching the extras on this disk. The documentary Second Time Around covering the Troughton era is fantastic. This disk is worth getting for this alone. Touches nicely on the missing episodes they filmed at the BFI last year.

The Krotons were the first script from Robert Holmes and I think is rather under rated by fans, but I thought it was a good story.

It's a decent story, the TARDIS has a dematerialising safety mechanism on show and from the waist up the Krotons themselves were pretty good.

Both companions get a lot to do and the Doctor puts in a good turn.

This story features one of the best Zoe lines ever, "Of course he'll figure it out. The Doctor is almost as clever as I am.":p

I haven't seen the story but I have heard it. My friends bought me a BBC audio reconstruction of it for my birthday a few years ago. It quickly struck me as a strange release for audio. I didn't think "The Krotons" was ever missing. Am I wrong on this? Why would they release an audio for a story that still exists?

I am very much looking forward to picking up the DVD. I love those documentaries that do a comprehensive look at a particular Doctor's entire run. There's a really good one about Colin Baker on "The Trial of a Time Lord." And I also want to get the special edition of "Resurrection of the Daleks" for the "Come In Number Five" documentary about Peter Davison's tenure. Beyond that, probably my favorite comprehensive documentaries are:
"A New Body At Last" ("Logopolis"), which covers the tumultuous transition between Tom Baker & Peter Davison.
"The End of the Line" ("The Gunfighters"), which covers William Hartnell's final season or so from "Galaxy 4" through "The Tenth Planet."

"The Krotons" is not the best Doctor Who serial, though it's far from the worst. It's a pity that we still have that one while, say "Power of the Daleks" or "Marco Polo" are lost.

That being said, the second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe are one of the best Tardis gangs in the show's history.

I watched the piece on Jamie yesterday, an interview with Frazer Hines. He tells a slightly horrify tale of a prank he and Troughton played on Wendy which would have been a sackable offence today.

They undid her skirt during a break and ran off with it.

I guess it was a different age but it was a horrible story. Can't imagine something like that being seen as hijinks these days.

That was during rehearsals in a church no less and Wendy had fallen asleep.

From memory I think they released all the sixties stories on audio - lost or not. I suppose some may want them in order to have a full collection.

Zoe's bum

I watched the piece on Jamie yesterday, an interview with Frazer Hines. He tells a slightly horrify tale of a prank he and Troughton played on Wendy which would have been a sackable offence today.

It was during the '60s and it's show-biz. None of our familiar rules apply. But it's interesting how much fixation there is on her lower half. People seem to have absolutely no shame in admitting how fixated they were by Zoe's bum at the end of "The Mind Robber, Part 1." And on the bonus features of that episode, the guy who played ZeKarkus mentions that he got a rather good look right up her skirt when they were rehearsing their fight scene. I wonder what Ms. Padbury thinks about all this? (Although, her relationship with Troughton & Hines seems like the most friendly, innocent, & easygoing relationships of any Doctor Who cast.) Let's just hope she got some kilt-related vengeance later.

True enough

Let's just hope she got some kilt-related vengeance later.

The even funnier part was that it being a church after they woke her up she ran out of the room without a kilt and ran into the vicar, she curtsied and went on her way.

“One of the most embarrassing moments actually happened during rehearsals of one of the Cyberman stories, I think I’d had a late night and I came into the rehearsal room not looking my best. Pat, Frazer and I were sat down learning our lines for a scene, and I was wearing a kilt, quite a short kilt, and Pat and Frazer sat either side of me. I have to say here that we were rehearsing in a church hall, which is quite relevant to the story. So we sat down, and because I’d had a late night I sort of nodded off, and suddenly I got two elbows in my ribs, with Pat and Frazer either side of me, saying ‘Quick, quick, you’re on!’, and I shot out of my chair and they’d undone the kilt, so I shot into the rehearsal room in my knickers. I was so embarrassed, I ran out of the doors and bumped into the vicar. I curtsied and ran into the ladies toilets.

Nope - of the 50 stories from the 60's there were 14 stories which did not get an audio release.

Zoe never looked better than in this ep.

This was my first exposure to the Troughton era.

I thought she looked mich better in The Mind Robber in that jumpsuit.
That is a very very close second, for her worst look I would have to say The Dominators.
I liked her outfit in The Krotons, interesting to hear in the commentary that her outfit was made out of some kind plastic lined paper.

Only just read Phillip Madoc died earlier this year, thats a shame.
