The Kobayashi Maru... a test of character... how would you do it?

I wonder if you can fuck with the computer? As in how adaptable is actually to cadet actions. Could you confuse the system with a sufficiently strange/unusual tactic/response.

"Maru is John Doe aboard your ship? He's my brother, I need to know."

":::AFter a moment of process::: Yes John Doe is aboard, help us Enterprise, Help us."

"Good, tell that son of a bitch I'll see him in hell!"

I think that the computer is probably programmed to counter or respond to any Cadet tactic that he or she might attempt in an attempt to get some sort of edge over the program. Well aside from not responding to the signal which I'm sure has been tried before...remember that this is a test of character in a crisis situation and that your professor or teachers are monitoring your reponse and grade you subsequently with how you respond.

I think that I would cram...request all previous Kobayashi Maru simulations and study the strategies used in them and attempt to create my own solution to the program. I'm kind of like Captain Sheridan from B5 in that anything can be beaten...its just a matter of finding out a proper solution.

The fact is that the Klingons will most likely not harm the civilian freighter because there's no honor in it as long as the Enterprise doesn't enter the Neutral Zone. Oh, they'd probably seize the vessel and make a big show of it, but the crew would most likely eventually be released. Again, there's no honor in killing civilians.
Keep in mind that the Klingons of Kirk's era weren't the least bit concerned about honor. That didn't start until TNG. In fact, the TOS Klingons were rather found of killing unarmed civilians to achieve their goals.

There would have to be a way to beat the thing. Any computer and/or computer simulation can be confused if you try hard enough. And in confusion you can craft a victory.

As a test of character, it's flawed; the cadets know it's some sort of test or simulation, so they're going to take actions consistent with what they know of what their instructor(s) expect of their students. Now TNG's pysch-test (from the episode, where they make Wesley face his greatest fear by staging a fake station accident and forcing him to decide to leave a man behind to "die"; can't recall the episode title) is a far better "test of character".

Hell, me being me, I'd probably get together with my classmates plan some smartass stunt. "Helm set course for <name of instructor's homeworld or Earth>, weapons arm phasers and photons FULL POWER! I want that planet burned to a cinder!! Give me a B- in advance-navigation will you son-of-a-bitch!"

That brings to mind how Riker may have failed it.

"What do you mean this simulator doesn't have a joystick?!??!?"

Self destruct at the first sign of the Klingons... I also like to punt on first down.
