The "know what really grinds my gears?" thread

Uber-generic indie music. Gods, I don't even know where to start with it. I suppose, first would be the fact that they all sound alike. Every week, I'm having to listen to a dozen different groups who fancy themselves as "indie" and I'll be damned if I can tell one group from another. It's called 'nuance!' I suggest you look it up!

Then there are the singers. Truely gifted vocalists are hard to come by, I understand that. But most people can carry a tune to some degree. So why is it that most of the lead "singers" in this genre are these hacks who can't go beyond a range of half an octave and insist on performing in this bullshit not-quite-singing-not-quite-spoken-word style? All it does is prove that they should march back into obscurity and back into their day-jobs where they belong. Now that I think about it, the same goes for the guitarists, bassists, and drummers. They too can't seem to pull more than a few basic chords even after nearly a dozen tracks.

Which brings me to the thing that grinds my gears most of all; the people that listen to them. Not only that, but listen to them and are convinced that their musical tastes are refined because of it. Just because most of these groups are (rightly) unsigned doesn't mean the rest of the class should be subjected to your skewed preferences during working hours! Keep that shit on your f**king Ipod and let the rest of us work in peace.

I remember that summer Stone Temple Pilots came out, in pure blatant imitation of Pearl Jam - right down to the vocal inflections and intervals. But nowhere near the intensity. I was downright pissed, and annoyed at people who dug them. But, that was also the summer that Beck had "Loser". The music biz is always looking for sound-alikes that are a step or two above Generic Indie, but I think the real deal always has a shot. Especially today. Back then, there was very little high speed internet, CD burners were still pricey, and music labels were (and still are) gigantic Ivory Towers where very few ever had a prayer of being heard.

Ooh, I'll add one that ticks me off. When people think that STP sounds like Pearl Jam. I love both bands, they aren't all that similar with the exception of one song.

closed minds . . . the "I know my opinion is the only correct one so I don't even have to listen to you, you're wrong and stupid for thinking differently" type of person

People who say "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less". Honestly, does it hurt to use a bit of grey matter for once?! Cretins.

That used to annoy me until I decided that it could be an abbreviation of "As if I could care less" which makes a lot more sense.

I still prefer "I couldn't care less" though.

Kind of on the same page, more on the same chapter;

When people insist upon using an apostrophe at the end of every word that happens to end with an s or getting their "to", "two", "too" tenses confused.

Methinks is a regional thing. Mason-Dixon thing?

It doesn't "grind my gears" so much as mildly amuse me and arouse a minute amount of quickly evaporating scorn, but I don't get the numerous thread titles that say variations on "Am I the only one..." and then follow it up with something that's either blindingly obvious or likely to be shared by a huge number of people. For example:

Am I the only one who knows that Darth Vader is Luke's father?

Am I alone in thinking that Elton John is gay?

Did anyone else see that movie that made 600 million dollars at the box office?

Have you ever eaten pizza, or is it just me?

Am I the last person on Earth who still drives a gas-powered car?

Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else.

So stop acting as if you've made some amazing scientific breakthrough that will simultaneously cure all disease and cause all the people of Earth to share in a prolonged synchronized orgasm that brings about world peace because you happen to have just realized that you're part of the Pepsi Generation. You're not the only one, I assure you.

Am I alone in thinking that Elton John is gay?

I remember telling my mother last year which celebrities were gay. She was genuinely shocked at quite a few that were obvious to everyone.

When George Takei came up though all she said was "Chekov better not be gay too!"

Bills really get me going.

The one that really gets me, people who THINK they know all the answers to my problems. That they have the right to tell me how to spend MY money. The ones that want to tell me I am doing it wrong all the time.

Stoners really grind my nerves.

When my parents try to tell me how do do *insertmenialtaskhere* the *correct* way for the BILLIONTH FREAKING TIME! Seriously I am 21 years old now I know how to cook, bake, clean etc. LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE UNLESS I ASK!

When I show some friends who come over who I thought would appreciate some of my Star Wars/Trek models and the work and detail I put into them, they ask, "are you gonna blow them up?"

:cardie:

"Are you nucking futs? Do you know how long it took me to build and paint that? Do you know how much that kit cost?"

Or

When they see a model that's all built up but unpainted, they just ask, "are you gonna paint it?"

Uhhhhhh...:wtf: Get the fuck out of my house.

The friends who don't talk to you, hang out with you, or anything until they need something. I have a group of friends who I can never get a hold of or hang out with until their computer is having issues or they get locked out of rooms. Annoys the hell out of me.

And people who ride my ass when the roads are icey.

Alright, point taken. :rommie: But PJ blows STP away.:klingon:

Another peeve of mine: coming to a 4-way stop, at which another vehicle as already stopped, and they refuse to move.

People who can't drive at night but insist on doing it anyway. That hacks me off.
