The Klingon Journalists

Drago-Kazov

Fleet Captain
Did we ever see a klingon journalist the series, movies or the books or comics?

Are most klingons even literate? i mean they are a feudal society, but on the other hand they have to operate all kind of tech.

Do different houses have their own press outlets? Does the chancellorfund a an independent press core to promote the intrests of the empire as a whole? (QCC) What could had happened to the press when Martok a member of the proletariat became chancellor?

I can't recall ever seeing any reference to the press from outside of the Federation. Even Jake Sisko worked for the Federation News Service, which sounds like government run instead of a free press.

:borg:

It sounds more like a press agency to me.

As for Klingon journalists, I must admit I had never thought about it before but Klingon journalism would make for an interesting topic to explore in a novel or a fanfic. I suppose they live pretty dangerously because every time someone they had done a story on felt insulted in their honour they might end up with a duel on their hands.
I'm currently very much in love with the show The Newsroom so when I read the thread I wondered what the Klingon version of this show would be like, with a Klingon Will McAvoy.

Federation News Service doesn't have to be government run anymore than the American Broadcasting Company is a government-run agency. It could be just a news agency that serves the Federation.

I've never heard of a Klingon news service. The closest agency serving the role in Klingon society would probably be the Klingon Intelligence service.

Preachy, with a touch of 20/20 hindsight and more murder. Klingon Mac would be fending off daggers from wily up-and-comer Klingon Maggie and, of course, Klingon Jim and Klingon Don would have to stab it out. Klingon Neal would still believe in Big Foot.

Klingon Charlie would have stabbed Klingon Leona Lansing already instead of holding her car door open for her. The new format of the Republican debate would consist of a "no duels in the studio" rule. Klingon Sloan would be even deadlier than she is now.

Hey, this is fun.

ETA:
By the way, I found this a very Klingon thing to say for some reason, so Will's already halfway there:

Will: Y'know what, how many women did you date before you finally found the one?
Charlie: It doesn't matter how many I dated before... I didn't date anyone after.
Will: It probably helped that she didn't pull your heart out, throw it into an oven preheated at 450 degrees, bake it in a light honey glaze and serve it to you on a bed of rice!

Instead of an engagement ring their would be a severed head in Klingon Will's desk. And they would have been talking about the Praxis explosion before anyone else.

I always figured the Klingon news service was any bunch of warriors telling exaggerated stories to each other while insanely drunk on blood wine.

:klingon:

I don't know. Maybe getting the facts right is the highest honour a Klingon Journalist can perform.

:klingon:

Yeah, that's Klingon Charlie Skinner. ;)

They must have some sort of news, though. They seem to be well informed about politics and what goes on in other houses and the like if they want to be.

Are Klingons even literate? You are not serious, I trust. That is right up there with Lt. Valeris hench men from ST VI. What did they say about Klingons, "...only top on the line models can even talk".

They do have to 'read' and interpret the control devices on their bridge stations, and I believe they have Klingon language symbols on their uniforms / armor, if I am not mistaken.

However more to the point, yes they must have some news system and journalist would need to be part of that.

Being a feudal society it would make sense if only nobles would know more about economics, news and war strategies. The same way the dirty underbelly of IRL politics works. The Wikilieaks stuff was downloaded from a database to which high level diplomats had acces. the only difference being that they would not have independent journos looking into stuff.

In the novels, the Klingons have their own sci-fi adventure show Battlecruiser Vengeance. If there are Klingon directors, scriptwriters, producers etc. then yeah, there have to be Klingon journalists out there somewhere.

Remember that 90% of the Klingons we see in TV Trek are soldiers on military vessels, or peeks into the High Council chambers. You never see a day in the life of Klingons in their native environment.

Plus opera.

Yeah, OP, I think it's safe to assume that reading and writing are aspects of their society for sure.

Maybe the Klingon news service is more along the lines of "announcements" and "decrees," rather than what humans consider classical definitions of journalism and reporting. Seemed like that in Star Trek Online on Qo'nos

You do see Klngons doing day to day stuff in The Burning House.

In Day of the Dove, Kirk makes a comment to Mara about her listening too much to their propeganda about the Federation. So I always thought that Klingon "journalism" would be more propeganda, designed to further advance the cause of the Empire, or whatever leadership was in a position to manipulate the "news" to his advantage.

That reminds me...

Were'nt smoth-headed klingons more dishonorable then klingons in their original form.

The use of propaganda doesn't necessarily mean an absence of journalists. It wouldn't be the free press we've all come to know and enjoy but all mpdern dictatorships I can think of did have journalists. They mostly toe the party line or find an unpolitical area to work in (like sports) and some might even try to slip some criticism in between the lines.

The klingons with ridges have a tendency to be more honorable so it would make sense for them to have a more honest press.
