I suppose I'm late to the party on this one, but I missed it in theatre and only saw it last week after picking up the dvd release.
I really liked this film. It struck me that (sadly) this likely isn't the kind of film I would have watched when I was in my early 20s. Fortunately my tastes have improved as well as my sense of appreciation.
I loved the developing friendship between Lionel and Albert, and I really felt for Albert's situation and difficulty. I also quite liked Helena Bonham Carter's portrayal of the younger Queen Mother---I felt she really could have been like that in those days.
Edward really does come across as a putz here as well as a whipped puppy to Wallis Simpson.
My parents also quite liked this film and dad expressed that he hadn't realized that Albert's speech impediment was so pronounced. Mind you dad also acknowledged that he was but a young boy in the 1930s so his recall of such things might be vague.
All around an excellent film and I'm glad to have it in my library.
