The King's Speech... Amazing film

I thought it was Excellent and everyone played their roles brilliantly. I never had a problem with Timothy Spall's Churchill because he's just one of those people where him as a character is so engrained in the group consciousness it'd be hard for anyone to make the role their own but I thought he did it without going too over the top or in to caricature.
Brilliant film all round.

(it was also interesting to see a young portrayal of Queen Elizabeth, since I'm so accustomed to see older portrayals like Helen Mirren in The Queen).
I liked that they had Mirren introduce the film at the Golden Globes last night; that was an appropriate choice of presenter (unlike having, say, Alicia Keyes introduce Black Swan; I still don't see the connection there).

I have just seen the film and I do agree Colin Firth, Geoffery Rush and Helena Bonham Carter should in the least be nominated.

On a side note, Derek Jacobi as the Archbishop used almost identical facial expressions and mannerisms to his 2007 Doctor Who role. The thought that the Archbishop was actually The Master did make me choke more than a little.

Interestingly I didn't see much of Yana or the Master in his portryal of the Cardinal. He played it much frialer and superciliously then either of his Who characters.

Plus, I mean, it's Sir Derek Jacobi. Saying that you can't see him as anything other than Professor Yana/the Master is a bit like saying you can't see Laurence Olivier as anything other than Zeus from Clash of the Titans. ;)

Saw this again over the weekend and have to say that I found Spall's performance as Churchill much less distracting. Perhaps it was the initial "shock" of seeing Wormtail performing a dramtic part that did it for me the first time.

Have to agree that Pearce did a fantastic job as Edward.. "Really? Doing what?" "Kinging!" :)

Oh I loved that bit! :guffaw:

What can I say that hasn't already been said? The King's Speech is a beautifully scripted film that is quite simply Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush's show. Without these two incredible actors working off each other to tell this remarkable story, I can't imagine this film being quite as good. My only qualm is Firth and his Pride & Prejudice co-star, Jennifer Ehle, couldn't share a longer scene but I realize it wouldn't really work considering their two roles.

I kept thinking of Claudius. Something about a stammer, I think... ;)

I saw The King's Speech today in a packed theater and I thought it was great. The Oscar buzz for this film is warrented. Amazing acting, writing, score, cinematography, etc.

I haven't seen all the Best Actor performances but it's hard to think of anybody being as good as Colin Firth. He was wonderful in the role and convincingly ran the gauntlet of emotions. Geoffrey Rush and HBC also deserved their nominations.

My only problem was accepting Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill. Had he been an actor unknown to me he might have been OK but his acting wasn't convincing for me to think "Winston Churchill" rather than "Wormtail".

Heheh. I thought Spall did a good, convincing job but all I could think of was Wormtail too. I thought it was cool when he got to do a scene with Gambon. I think that was Spall's first scene in the movie, I was thinking "It's Wormtail and Dumbledore!"

I would highly recommend this film.

That was Derek Jacobi? I didn't realize that. Though now that I think about it, the voice was recognizable.

It just won the Director's Guild award- those winners rarely fail to win both Picture and Director. Few exceptions.

Took top honors last night during the SAGs... All this hype has me worried there will be a spoiler at the Oscars.. We'll just have to see...

On a side note, Christian Bale getting best supporting at the SAGs was well deserved!

I have seen "The King's Speech" twice now and both times was just touched by the emotional impact of the film and the brilliant acting performances. The dude playing Churchhill is a little grating at times and seems to be one of the film's few weak points. The score is just great. I might go see this a third time on the weekend.
