The Kelvin Timeline Starship Thread

I don't think straight pylons look good, but I do think they're a signature feature of the TOS version. It's what lets you tell the difference between it and the refit at a hundred paces (even the JJPrise kept the straight pylons). Still, my take's always been that my initial reaction wouldn't have been "What the hell do they think they're doing?" if they either squished the ship down to make it sleeker, or swept back the pylons, but not both. A very slight sweep might also make the ship look better without disrupting it's TOS-ness (like, keep the taper, but have the front edge near vertical and the back edge more angled).

Random contribution: the other night I dreamt of a Kelvin-era Federation starship that was a carrier - cruising through a purple gaseous cloud - with lotsa of shuttle bays running along a fattened neck, and secondary hull; and overall Kelvin stylings (ie: 09 Enterprise straight pylons, with slight curvilinear shape, blue bussards, in the vein of the Beyond Ent-A, and a non-rounded saucer, angled like a non-specific dodecahedron). A detailed dream, to a point / but slightly fluid / changing.

No narrative or storyline as such, more like a dream animatic / render - and overall, probably not the most efficient design / practicality - but I woke-up wanting to see another Kelvin-era movie forthwith!

Thanks for listening!

While it certainly doesn't have a dodecahedron shaped saucer, I could certainly see the U.S.S. Salcombe from Beyond filling some kinda shuttle carrier role. Especially if that cut out in the front end can open up.

Recently came across this concept image of an alternate Bridge to the Kelvin.

While I think the Bridge we got is near perfect for its era, I still do rather like this somewhat smaller alternative.

That’s what the bridge of the NX-01 should have looked like. Cramped and utilitarian.
I kind of imagine that's what early Federation ships were like. Mass produced, cheap, and quick to build.

Plus with figuring out how to blend Human, Vulcans, Andorian, and Tellarite technology, there wouldn't be too much thought put into aesthetics. Hence the cramped, and very spartan interiors.

The NX-01 was a different beast. It was supposed to be the shining achievement of Earth, with all the bells, whistles, and extra cup holders.

The NX Class was a Corvette. The ships that came after were Chevettes..... only faster.

I understand your metaphor. I think it’s just that when people say things like the interior of the NX-01 feels like a ‘submarine,’ it’s a little annoying because those people have clearly never seen what the interior of a submarine actually looks like. (Not saying that you said that; just when people say things like that in general.) And the NX-01 interior was certainly not like what Spock described in BoT, but that ship has sailed.

Oh, I'm with you that. I've never toured a sub, but I have toured a couple WWII era warships, the USS New Jersey and the HMCS Haida, and you're right, the NX-01 is nothing like that. Though I think that might just be a reality of production, at the time. Hallways needed to be so big to accommodate production equipment, camera's, etc.

We're there to ever be an actual series or film set during the Romulan War, I'd want them to go full submarine with the production design. I want cramped. I want dirty. I want only the most basic of necessities. I want it to look like a WWII Destroyer that's been at sea a little to long.

In the appendix of the novelization of "Broken Bow," there are a series of interviews with the producers and production designers of ENT.
"As far as the interior goes, we visited a submarine and got the idea of what confined space was like. We tried to make it a little more confined but at the same time a hospitable place..."--Rick Berman

I do think the interior of NX-01 is reminiscent of a submarine here and there, but still clearly a comfortable starship.

Could always be the bridge for the Daedalus class.
Could. Mix it with the bridge of the Franklin, and you'd have a perfect early Federation bridge.

I also came across these concept images for the Franklin bridge that I rather like. They'd work pretty good for a smaller SNW era ship.

Plus, the best shot I've ever seen of the Engineering set for the Franklin.
