The Kelvin Timeline Starship Thread

There's also concept art of RED KELVIN
I kinda like the look of that.

With all this talk about the Kelvin, we can't forget to bring up its awesomely retro shuttlecraft.

Love the look of these things.

I know there are several fan made videos. This one I stumbled upon by Tobias Richter just highlights some of the beautiful ship work in these films:

I remember seeing that shortly after the film came out and I was amazed by how close his models were to the "real thing".

Tobias does amazing work and I really appreciate all of his animations.

Here is another fan made animation, though it is a newer ship model inspired by the Kelvin universe:

Speaking of fan made animation, @PixelMagic's work is outstanding:

Really gotta throw some love at the Bridge of the Franklin. It's simple and very straightforward. It lacks the cluttered, workhorse look of the Kelvin and it doesn't have the shine or state of the art look of the NX-01. I could really see the Freedom class being a mass produced ship, as opposed to the NX Class being something considered special.

I never understood the reasoning behind "old ships need to be small, and new ships need to be big".

The old ships probably had less automation, so larger crew requirements. They presumably didn't have replicators so they'd need to bring everything with them, so more cargo space needed. I'd also expect the engineering power reactors would be more primitive and less efficient (so likely larger and with higher fuel requirements). All of these things should point to larger ships.

Well sure. But before it kinda was a case of old ships were small and new ships were big. All the Enterprises from NCC-1701 to NCC-1701-E increased in length, if not total mass. The F is supposedly bigger than the E and the J is 3 miles long. Now what you say does make sense but I can't fault anyone going with the other idea.

This is a great thread!
I enjoy the looks of the various ships. I used to play Fleet Command, which as some neat designs, too.

The Eaglemoss models of the background Starfleet ships are kitbash-able. I wish there had been an Enterprise-A model.

Anyone remember the non-canon Aegis class?

Here's a controversial thought; I kinda like the Narada. Yes, the interior doesn't make much sense, as pointed out in the film, but the ship and what I think the idea behind it, is kinda neat.

That idea behind it being that it's a giant asteroid miner. What I think is that it opens up its "arms" and wraps itself around an asteroid, similar to an octopus or squid going after a fish. The arms contain all matter of tools for chipping away and breaking up the asteroid and sending it back down towards the main body to be processed. It's less a mining ship and more a mobile mining platform.

It's really the only way I can make sense of the design or the size.

In regards to its design, it's definitely way out there in regards to Romulan design esthetics, but it does share a few similarities to the drone ships from Enterprise. Perhaps they were all manufactured by the same design firm, as opposed to whatever firms design the Birds of Prey, Warbirds, etc.

There's always the noncanon Countdown/STO backstory that the Narada was upgraded with illegal Borg technology, hence the spikes. In the comics, the Klingons got hold of the technology and had Birds of Prey that looked like Narada but with wings sticking out.

Yeah, honestly, I hated the Borg connection. But that's me. I'd rather come up with a more creative answer.

I had no issue with it as a mining vessel as presented. The design might not look like a good combat form but it's not supposed to. The tendrils probably allow management of multiple asteroids at a time, letting the crew focus on what's needed.
I even like that its armaments may not even be technically weapons, but high powered explosives designed to break up asteroids. It's not like we saw them firing disruptors, phaser, plasma torpedoes, or any other known Romulan weapons.
