The Job Hunt

Starbreaker

Everyone share their stories about job hunting this year if you're out there looking for your first career or a change of pace.

I just had an initial interview with the Secret Service Uniformed Division yesterday. I applied back in October, took a test on December 1st, and didn't have an interview until Feb. 3. Everything went great. I still have to have a panel interview, polygraph, drug test, physical, etc. though.

I got a "real" job back in October than forced me to move back home. It's really not going well, and I completely regret moving away from all my friends. Sadly, my lease isn't up until the end of September, and I can't afford to break it.

So the last couple months I've been looking for anything in the area, but I'm having no luck, and I'm quickly going broke.

I graduated with my diploma a few weeks before the recession hit and I've been applying for at least 5-10 jobs a week (or, at least what I can depending on what's available). So far, nothing. I have had the occasional nibble but nothing worth noting.

So right now I'm working two part time jobs which is no where near cutting it financially so I'm hopefully looking for a 3rd part time job till I find something full time in my field, or at least as close to my field as possible.

I got a phone call on Friday asking me to start on Monday it is yet another temp job but at least its with the firm an not a agency.

Wow! That is really cool.

Better not mention the BBS though, okay... :shifty:

Wow, secret service? That sounds pretty impressive. Hope everything goes well.

I got my first job back in October, as an assistant English instructor in Japan. I have my plane ticket for the 14th of March and I pick up my work visa next week at the Japanese consulate in San Francisco. It's slowly coming together and should make for an interesting adventure. I'm looking forward to it immensely.

I work at a community college TV studio but my hours were cut so I had to find another job. I didn't really find anything except temp work. Now I work two jobs. I work at the college during the day and in a call center at night. Combined, I make good pay.

Still, the temp job is only supposed to last until May and there's a good chance I'll be laid off from the college after June 30. Technically my position was already supposed to be cut but was preserved because of the ARRA, so I'm on stimulus money.

I need to find a permanent full-time job by the middle of the year. My current situation is too uncertain.

I have a useless landscaping degree so I'm fucked and stupid so I'm looking for any job I can get that doesn't make me cook "food"at McDonald's. It sucks. When it gets warm I'm just going to go "fuck it" and leave the area and just find something somewhere.

I got laid off from state government back in May. Put in lots of applications and resume's..not even ONE interview or call. Went to my step-daughter's in Rockwall, TX for a while and applied for all kinds of things..not one interview...now I had to move my parents in with me, mom passing out and dad with his dementia, I'm now a care giver and job hunting has come to an end for awhile. Mom and dad pay all the house utilities and I take care of them the best I can. I'm 52 and don't know where my next job will be. I photograph weddings on the side but nothing solid so far for this year.

Trying to get back in the working world after all the freelance stuff dried up around here. So far, no go. Most of what's around here at the moment is peon fast-food and grocery stocker jobs; which I'd do in a heartbeat, but the general comment is "well we think you're over qualified" or "After working freelance for so long how do we know you'd be able to deal with taking orders from a boss"

I know I'm in college and I work part-time in a store. My heart goes out to you guys. Its not easy getting or even finding a job into today economy.

Eh. Even part time jobs can be hard to come by.

I lost my job last year after the company got into financial trouble and had to do some "redeployment". I started an advanced training after that, followed by an internship. The internship went well and executives decided to keep me a bit longer as a temp. However, my contract expires now at the end of February and I haven't found another job yet. I hope I will, because I could really use the money.

What really is pissing me off is the contracts I have done that as soon as I call them up for a job reference it's "We're not really comfortable doing that".

^ Why ? They can't deny you a reference, can they? I mean, it's not allowed in my country. You could probably sue them. The question is, what good would you get out of it? But I've never heard that someone isn't "comfortable" with a reference. Even if your labour relation wasn't good you should still be able to get a job reference. Or these people simply don't know how to write one. In that case you should try and write a reference yourself, which you show them. If they are "comfortable" with it, they can sign it.

I was laid off the week after I moved, and the week before christmas . . .
they probably did it then, or else if they laid me off after the 1st they would probably have had to pay me for '10s vacation time :(

now I'm on unemployment and hoping to find a part time job while I go back to school
