Just watched The Inner Light. Do you think the story works best as a single episode, with the dual timeline aspects, i.e. a few mins on the bridge = a few years on Kataan. Or would expanding to a 2 - parter have worked?

I'm not sure if it would hav needed to be 2 parts. It worked very well as the one episode. If it was 2 episodes it may have dragged on.

What's the cliffhanger here? That the crew don't believe they'll ever be able to stop the probe from mind-raping Picard?
That could work, but for the story to get stretched out to two hours Picard would need to take a more active role in the simulation and somehow become personally invested and involved in dramatic conflict. It's hard to believe there was no war on Kataan as the end approached; having such could provide an opportunity for Picard's character to, for example, be betrayed as precious resources are squandered and the end gets accelerated. The Kamins may have been worthy of having their knowledge preserved for posterity, but they don't have to have been free from the same dark side that pretty much all aliens have in ST to some degree or other.
