The inevitable has occured... the Red Ring of Death (Xbox360)

I've had my Xbox 360 for over a year with no problems. I thought I'd be one of the lucky ones who would never have to experience the classic error. But I was wrong. Today I go to play some Halo 3, and all I get is the damn RROD. The purpose of this thread is threefold:

1. rant :scream:
2. Who else here has had this problem?
3. Yeah, I 've looked online, but in your guys' opinion, what is the best way to solve the problem?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. :(

Contact MS as they will repair the RROD for free, as a matter of fact any fault you get with the 360 just phone MS up and tell them its the RROD, i had two of their repairs fail on me just outside their new 3 month warranty and both were 1 red light, and both time i just said it had 3 RROD, and they fixed it......i think now they are just replacing the Mobo and DVD drive as standard now......and make sure the box is a plain and not the actual 360 box....its all quite painless really.......you put your 360 only in a box and seal and stick on your shipping labels that MS either email or send you.....you contact UPS and they pick it up and deliver it back to your door.

Its that simple.....if only we did not have to do it multiple times..

I had my original launch 360 right up until the end of 2007, then it got the RROD, so MS repaired it for free, and its failed 4 times after that right up until October 2008 when i got sick if it and ditched everything 360 related......But just recently i decided to have another go and purchased a new 60gig version, and it seems to be a lot quieter and when you play the games from the HDD it produces hardly any heat.

Just finished Mass effect(WOW, what a ending)....

Anyway i hope you get it back quick.

Just call 1-800-4myxbox and go to "technical" whine about the rrod and they will send you a box(on request) to ship it back for free replacement-I had mine for 3+ years(out of warranty) but they took it when it died. No charge. Just hang on to your hard drive.

Yeah, they expect you to use your own box now.

Not only that, but I was able to print the label at home for my GF's son and he was able to ship it off right away, didn't have to wait for a label in the mail. And this was about a month ago. I'm not sure why some of you are being told to wait on a box and/or label. I guess must depend upon which rep you get on the phone or something.

The biggest problem was the rushed nature of the 360's development, and Todd Holmdahl being a barely functional retard when it came to the industrial design.

I'm saving this for my OH if he ever gets the RROD on his xbox. It's nice to have a name to blame.

I take it that you probably don't have any kind of working relationship with Holmdahl?

I'm just utterly amazed that he and J Allard are still holding onto their jobs after the comedy of errors that was the 360's development cycle -- and the whole billion-dollar catastrophe that has been the RROD saga. When system yields have a 68 percent failure rate off the lines, you don't rush the system to market. You shut the lines down, you go back to the design, and you find out why in hell two out of every three machines are failing. (Of course, Robbie Bach slashed the testing budget, so there wasn't even much room for quality debugging work. Brilliant.)

Well, J got banished to the land of Zune anyway... and I'm sure the Xbox 720 is going to have a much longer testing cycle too!

Not quite -- he was stretched thin during the 360's development because he was put in charge of Zune, while at the same time he was overseeing 360 development ... but, as of now, I believe he's the chief technology officer of the Entertainment & Devices division.

I think when MS do release date next xbox you will see very poor initial launch sale's because people will be waiting to see just how reliable it is......i doubt people will rush in again after the fiasco that was the 360, that's going to be in the massive amount of RROD owners minds for some time to come.

I know i wont be touching the next xbox until i am sure its relaible.

I took care of it earlier. I registered my console, and requested repair. I'm lazy, so I asked for them to send the box and label. ;)

So, I assume I should pack the console without the Hard Drive, correct? Or do I need to include that too?

So do you think I should call and bitch for a box, or should I just use my purchase box?

Well I don't know what the deal with my GF's son, he acted as if they refused to send a box. (I"m old, so he's an adult btw, so it's not like they blew off some 13 yr old kid.) Plus they told him to print his own label. Fortunately I had a box that was perfect for shipping. Like I said, I'm a little confused as to why some people are getting labels and/or boxes mailed to them when he was told he could get neither.

Man, that's just going to be an extra week you have to wait.

I can't remember why, but they told me specifically NOT to use my purchase box.

Microsoft's customer service isn't exactly top notch. I had to deal with 3 different people before I made progress because my "address wasn't showing up in the database."

A little follow up for me - I called Xbox support and apparently there is a difference between 'ship label' and 'ship box' on the online repair (:wtf:), but the lovely Indian lady I spoke to canceled my original repair for me and is sending me a box with label. I don't remember seeing such an option listed at the time, but I was rather pissed at the moment. :rommie:

I just thought I'd share in case anyone wanted a box but only got a label.

This is really weird. Do they know *why* all these RRODs keep happening?

Horrific and rushed industrial design of the box, including woefully inadequate heat dissipation for a CPU and GPU that, combined, generated enough heat to power a thermonuclear reaction.

When production of the systems reached its full speed, 68 out of 100 were coming off the lines as defective.

And they did such a fantastic job with the 1st xbox!! mine is still running strong (1st xbox that is).
