The incredible Hulk

safarial

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
What are your thoughts, on this character?
What do you like about the hulk?
What do you not like about the Hulk?
What's your least favorite version, annd what is your favorite version of the Hulk?
What's your opinion about his supporting characters, ans the changes they have gone through?

My favorite version of the Hulk was the childlike Hulk of the 70s, when he just wanted to be left in peace and the military would never leave him alone. He would try to help people, but because of his temper or his great strength would cause destruction or frighten people, perpetuating his reputation as a monster. This goes back to the theme of his origin, when he became the Hulk as a result of saving a dumb kid from certain death-- no good deed goes unpunished.

I also liked the Intelligent Hulk issues, back when Bill Mantlo restored Bruce Banner's mind. The early issues were pretty good, when Stan and the others were still trying to find what worked best. I disliked Byrne's mindless Hulk, and later versions that devolved the Hulk into a villainous character left me pretty bored. I abandoned Marvel a while ago, so I don't know the details of what they're doing now, but nothing I've read in Previews or online has sounded very interesting.

I liked the grey Hulk. He didn't win by just smashing things, he would also outwit opponents. His fight with the strength enhanced Thing is a great example of this. It was much like the early Hulk who used similar craftiness to combat the Avengers in Avengers issue 1.

^^ I did get a kick out of how Ben still lost to him, even though he was actually stronger at that point. :rommie:

My first reading experiences with the Hulk were actually the Peter David Grey "Mr.Fixit" Hulk years. I enjoyed so much of what he did by adding nuance to the version I'd see on cartoons. That being the orign style green Hulk who was dimwitted and brutish.

I really liked the "Professor" version which was a win/win version of Hulk. The intelligence of Bruce wrapped into the savage strentgh of Green Hulk.
I've gone back and thanks to the Essentials collections read the first 75 or so issues of early Hulk and those do have a certain charm to them that only Stan could bring in that era.

I think I like the green, smart and cranky version best; basically the original version, colouring aside. I'm looking forward to seeing what Joss Whedon has done with him, though.

IO9 has just published an article including most of a CG Hulk/Superman dust-up.
