The I officially vow to not be spoiled thread

I spoiled Nemesis to myself, so the effect of Data dying meant nothing to me, whereas the people sitting behind me were legitimately in tears when it happened. SHHHH, I don't want to hear opinions about Nemesis. This is about "Star Trek."

So I'm going to vow to not be spoiled.

I'll watch the teasers, trailers, and any OFFICIAL broadcasts or previews, but from this day forth I'll do nothing to intentionally spoil myself.

You should, too. Think about it, it's the first Star Trek we'll have in more than three years of waiting.

Most the people in the audience will have a casual knowledge of Star Trek at best, as this movie is aimed towards the main stream. Don't you want the same experience they'll all get, or are they better than you? You can't have fun and be entertained if you know all the plot points. It's bad enough that I know Spock(s) will be in it, but I'm sure that'll be in the trailer so it's no big surprise.

The hunt for good spoilers is fun. Remember before Enterprise started, we would have a new CG render show up on the boards every week, each time looking convincing? There was even one ship that everyone was POSITIVE would be the NX-01. Remember how the entire Nemesis script leaked an incredibly long time before the movie was out? Like a year before, and no one believed it was the real script. Then in the theater, it was pretty much word for word the same? All that stuff is good fun, but this might be the last Star Trek adventure in a long time if it doesn't do well. $135M+ is a lot of money to gamble with, and if there isn't a huge payoff at the box office, it's sayonara for a long while. If such a thing happens, I'd prefer to have watched it unspoiled this time around.

So anyway, I'm vowing to not spoil myself anymore. :)

(Edit: This doesn't mean I'm unspoilable. If some a-hole wants to PM me with "Kirk dies in the end, and he's really dead! The whole universe is rebooted!" And I read it, then I'm spoiled. I'm just saying I'm not going to actively search for set pictures and insider reports anymore.)

Can we get promise rings with little white delta shield logos on them?

I know for a fact I'll read every spoiler that comes my way. I have confidence, however, that so many of 'em will be BS that I'll still be in for a few surprises on stardate 122508.

NEM spoiled Data's death for me. The minute Data's crass "replacement" showed up on screen, I knew it was all over for the poor guy. :rommie: So if the writing is that transparent, then no pledge will save us, but for what it's worth, I'm swearing off spoilers (as I always do for any movie or series where I have any respect for the writing at all - I only read spoilers for shows where the writing is so ludicrous it hardly matters what happens).

The only way to truly avoid spoilers until you see the film is to avoid the internet--or at least any websites with message boards connected to Trek, science-fiction, comics, or genre entertainment in general.

I guess that pretty much leaves just the porn sites then...
:cardie:

I could make that pledge, but who am I kidding? When the NEM script leaked I swore I wouldn't read it. Three days later I was devouring that thing.

I'm weak, so I accept I'm probably gonna know as much as the internets will tell me when I walk into the theater.

Please, when spoilers finally do leak for this movie I will be all over them like maggots on a dead guy. I don't care if I end up seeing the first showing on opening night and know exactly how it turns out. Trust me, if the movie really is the masterpiece Abrams is promising, then it'll still shine even with full knowledge of what will happen.

I will not read the script beforehand. I imagine it will be nearly impossible to avoid all spoilers, especially as a mod in this forum. But I will not actively seek them out.

Which leads me to a thought. What do you all think about having a pinned thread at the top of the forum for spoiler whores? Good idea to try and keep the spoilers in one place or not worth the effort?

I will proudly add my name to the list.

I do not want to Trek XI to be spoiled for me.

Because I learned my lesson waaaaaay back when "Generations" came out. It was really the first time I had access to the internet. And the first thing I did was to find the first search engine I could find (Webcrawler) and look up everything I could find about Generations. I searched and found PlanetRiker (http://planetriker.treknews.com). That's how come I am here now! I scoured PlanetRiker and because of my lust for spoilers, I eventually relized that I had spoiled the entire freaking script to that movie. (PlanetRiker was on his game back in tha day!!) I remember going to the movie with a friend who was just as devoted to Trek as I am. And he sat there with this awe on his face at seeing the Enterprise-B, Kirk's death and the destruction of the Enterprise-D. And me, the guy who spoiled the whole freaking movie, sat there bored out of my skull. I have always felt ashamed about ruining the movie for myself.

Since then I have vowed to not spoil another movie moment ever again.

I avoided Superman Returns and Star Trek: Nemesis like the plague.

I think that's an excellent idea! I don't want to be spoiled. I want to see this movie completely free of script and fx knowledge.

A good idea, but spoilers are going to spill into other threads regardless. An example:

Poster 1: "I hope Kirk kills Nero in the coolest way possible!"
Poster2: "Kirk doesn't kill Nero, since Nero also has a scene with the elderly Spock played by Nimoy."
Poster 3: "Oh noes, spoilers!"

I'm with you, Matt. I have no interest in advanced knowledge of the movie except for official releases from Paramount.

It's difficult to avoid spoilers while viewing a discussion board, but it can be done....I hope.

I ruined season three of the new Doctor Who because of reading BBS. That kinda sucked.

I don't want to do the same with this movie. It was nice for the TOS films to not know much of what was going to be in the film. I want that surprise back.

The question is, when do I stop reading this forum?

Which is where spoiler code and mod edits comes in I guess.
I know it won't be easy but I think we all need to try and keep the spoilers to a minimum in here leading up to the movies premiere. It's not a problem yet since none of us know anything. Once info starts leaking we'll figure something out.

I'm aboard for avoiding spoilers. It's what I've always done, anyway. I prefer to experience it the first time in theaters. I will read and/or watch any officially released info, but I always try to avoid anything that goes beyond that.

I'm going to try my hardest this time... I completely ruined Nemesis by finding a blow by blow description of the whole movie online. It wasn't too bad until I hit the theaters a year later and discovered the website was 90% accurate. I want this one to be as big of a surprise as the previous 3 TNG movies were... yeah, that's going to happen

Well, Paramount is already doing a better job keeping things secret for Trek XI than they did with Nemesis. A complete plot synopsis for Nemesis was online 17 months before its release. We're 13 months before Trek XI's release and there's barely any info at all.

So far most of the 'spoliers' have been nothing but 'rumors' and we all know that 'rumors' have nothing to do with reality in any way, shape or form.
