It is a paradox classic example, when they went there he had died and that was his grave, but then he managed to remain to die, then his grave in Trenzalore never existed, but for Clara able to save it in special Christmas she'd have saved him jumping on your timeline, creating a paradox.

We are talking about River's grave though not the Dcotor's and his grave still had to exist for Clara to have gone back and changed it. That's only part of that makes no sense. Clara had the Time Lords give the Dcotor a whoe new set of regenerations altering the future, but that meant she didn't get to though the Doctor's timeline to save him in the past.:vulcan:

In short since the Doctor didn't die there he had no grave there for them to visit and Clara could've gone back though his timeline to save him, since the 11th Dcotor didn't there. Then of course there the fact that Smith's Doctor wasn't the 11th Doctor but in fact was the 13th Doctor.

Very good. I enjoyed but ended up having a bit of a cry at the end.

I was in hospital on Christmas Eve getting another cancer check. This one was all clear thankfully (my last one wasn't) but I was left with no emotional defence for the end of the episode.

If this was River's last episode I think it was better than Clara's.

This board really needs a like function sometimes. Glad this check was all clear. Whisper it but some things are more important than Who :)

I'm giving it a Four - maybe slightly generous. A nice change of tone after the rather fraught last quarter of season 9. Capaldi and Kingston work fine together, and I thought the episode for the most part steered clear of the triteness to which seasonal episodes can be prone.

I might have liked it more if Moffat had addressed the fact that River was specifically married to Eleven and maybe had either her or the Doctor consider the marriage voided by his regeneration, to the other's chagrin. There's also the matter of him having spent four times her entire lifespan in a town called Christmas. Like Missy last year, River should be ancient history to him. Still, these are minor misgivings and the episode works as an enjoyable caper in its own right.

@Pindar: Glad to hear that you got the all-clear.

If River died in the Library why does she have a grave on Trenzalore?

I thought that wasn't her actual grave, just a tombstone with her name on it to mark the secret passage into the TARDIS?

And what's this "if" nonsense? River did die in the Library, this was made clear in the Library story and River herself references it in Name of the Doctor.

Surely not :)

It was good to see Capaldi playing off someone else. He should have had his own companion this year.

Regarding Trenzalore:

If the Doctor was destined to die there and not survive to give her the screwdriver, then how come River's data ghost was around?

Looks like his "grave" is still there - which would make sense considering the length of time he spent there.

"Gotcha" ;)

I think it was Ten who gave her the screwdriver — shortly after SITL, from his perspective.

Perhaps the Doctor was never destined to die on Trenzalore. He just hadn't figured that out yet.

Or perhaps his real death on Trenzalore is still coming.

Or maybe it's just a paradox and we need to be okay with that. :p

Clara died three times over, Rory was erased from existance and brought back, Moffat has proven repeatedly that can bring back anybdoy from the dead.

I must say, I'm dreadfully jealous of Alex Kingston. It's not fair how sexy she is at her age. I've never looked as good as her in my 20's as she does in her 50's! Not fair at all.

Thought I had replied this thread already. Guess not.

It wasn't a bad episode but not all that terribly interesting. I was tired when I watched it and had a drink so maybe I need to watch it again. But for a River Song episode that might possibly be her last I expected more.

You know, this Christmas we got both the Eighth and the Twelve meeting River... it really was an interesting Christmas for the good Doctor.

Who knows? I seriously doubt she met the Warrior, though.

And Eight knows her under a different name, presently. Who knows what will happen in Doom Coalition 2.

River had pictures of 1-12, can we assume she has met, or will meet, all of them?

According to The Eternity Clock, River has apparently met all of them. (Well, all but Captain Grumpy, who hadn't been created at the time the game came out.) She uses something like Retcon on them to keep them from remembering her.
