I just found this trailer for a Lord of the Rings fan film called "The Hunt for Gollum". I think it looks like it could be good.

Link (Dark Horizons)

The visual style appears to be consistent with the films, including the look of the characters.

Yeah, that does look good if it doesn't get cheesy. If thry actually filmed all of whay was shown there in that trailer, and didn't just use clips from the Jackson films then I applaud them.

and it's out

just watched it, and I must say it's one of the better fanfilms I've seen
I thoroughly enjoyed it
That link isn't working for me. I had to use this one:

I just watched it, and I think that every fan of the LOTR films should watch "The Hunt for Gollum". It is easily the best fan film that I have ever seen. My only complaint is that the final fight scene was too dark, and I also had trouble hearing some of the dialogue. But other than that, I think the film is excellent.

I hope that the film becomes available as a download eventually, instead of just a streaming video like it is now.

Artists from Framestore (I think) worked on it. Framestore is a professional VFX facility in the UK and in NY.

I tried to get in on the project, spoke to the director, but they were already finishing up by the time I got a hold of them.

You can sorta download it. I just copied it out of my browser cache. It's a 300MB ON2 file, which FLV Player will play.

I recently installed the Ask And Record Toolbar. It gets installed separately of your browser, but creates a toolbar in the browser (IE & FireFox, at least).

Not only does it save pretty much any video, such as YouTube, the Hunt For Gollum and any other .flv, but it also has a convert option built in that allows you to change it to most other formats, even in the same quality, after the fact.

BTW, one of the best fan films ever.

Finally had the chance to watch it, despite having it on my hard drive for several days. :)

If you love the three films, you should definitely watch this. It does get a little ponderous and slow at times, but given the source material that's to be expected. This feels like something that could legitimately go in the middle of Fellowship. The only complaint I have is that the battle with the Black Rider is murky as hell.

Other than that, the production values are solid. The Orcs look superb, and the major setpiece battle (about 25 minutes in) is handled with some real flair.

I wouldn't mind having this as a DVD on my shelf.

Well, based on what I've seen in this fan-film and the recent Sci-Fi Channel 2-part film "Knights of Bloodsteel", I have come to the conclusion that Orcs are a cross-breed of human and rat. Which might be totally plausible. But Urak-hai that's a different story.

Orcs were originally elves corrupted by Morgoth during the First Age. Trolls were corrupted Ents.

Tolkien himself was never 100% clear on the exact origin of Orcs... He could't quite decide on which origin he preferred. It all had to do with the debate about the nature of Orcs - whether or not they were redeemable or not. And if they had been elves, then they were redeemable, and the mass slaughter of them was wrong. (post-ROTK, every single Orc was hunted down and killed) On the other hand there is a heck of a lot of Orc slaughter in the books. :) It was a question Tolkien never settled on.

As for the Ent/Troll thing, that is hinted at but never quite stated clearly. I see the Trolls more as Morgoth's attempt to create something equivalent of Ents - a counterpart if you wish. Because there is very little similarity between Trolls and Ents. (beyond their size)
