Jaylah rocks, and I'd love to see more of her. Not because Star Trek "needs more women", but because she was a very impressive character in Beyond.

She was great. And yes I echo the notion that she should join the crew moving forward (and the movie leaves the door wide open for that possibility). Especially since, unfortunately, Chekov is going to be gone. And it'd give the crew another female for Uhura to interact with, which is a nice bonus.

I loved Jaylah. I want to see her in the new series, but unfortunately that won't happen. Still, if she isn't back for Trek XIV, I will be bummed.

Her friendship with Scotty is awesome. It's essentially mutual respect from one engineer to another, combined with that comfort one gets when they find someone they can connect with on an intellectual level.

Oh, I definitely want Jayla to become part of the crew.

My husband said that Jayla was his favourite part of the movie. Then he said how he was disappointed with Uhura this time around. He said she didn't seem nearly as strong. I said, "Well, she is going through a break up. That makes everyone a little...muted".

Anyway, when I told him we were all talking about how much we'd like to see Jayla as a regular he brightened..."Oh, I'd love to see those two working together and playing off one another!"

Is there a petition we can sign to make this happen? ;)

@Shanndee About Uhura: She seemed less strong?
That's... odd.
She was willing to sacrifice herself to separate the saucer section and save the rest while having to stay behind with Krall. She was the hero there. A few minutes before she beat up a couple of aliens. She keeps facing Krall directly and is brave enough to argue with him even though she knows that he might kill her. She breaks out of prison to send a distress signal. She frees herself and saves Spock instead of being rescued by him.
I thought Uhura was very strong in this movie.

That moment when Uhura shows up and saves Spock? Definitely priceless. A lot of people in the theater laughed, myself included, because the surprise on Spock's face was evident.

Uhura has consistently been one of the strongest personalities in the three movies. And obviously Saldana's intensity and presence helps. I think this movie actually showed her at her very best. I was amazed when I saw her completing the saucer separation, knowing that she has to stay behind with Krall.
That was so selfless.

Zoe's terrific . Her expressions are so subtle but powerful and completely believable. It would be great to have her and jaylah working together in the next film.
