"Hip" as slang began around the late 1930s, so define which hipsters you're even talking about. Current ones don't even seem interested in jazz, the cretins.

I am talking about the contemporary ones. I first encountered Hipsters when i was in the army 14 years ago. There was a Hipster bar/eatery near my army base and i used to frequent it. I kinda liked the subculture but i never got into it. I got a renewed interest in them now.

Walking to work today, I was passed by four hipsters on roller-blades. They were carrying some film equipment. They are living the dream.

There are precisely 0 "Hipsters" here in the UAE. No sub-culture for it.

For the benefit of an older member, please give your definition of "hipster". When I was growing up the term was virtually identical in meaning to "beatnik".

But I've lately heard it used to refer to folks who more resemble the "yuppies" of the eighties, and usually in a derogatory fashion.

In every generation, the hipster is concerned with cool above all else, cool being extremely nonchalant in attitude, and deliberately counter to norm fashions. Current hipsters are also concerned with reviving certain retro emblems of fashion with a sensibility so ironic that it hardly seems a conscious thing. I mean, roller-blades, seriously?

To borrow from Wikipedia,

The hipster subculture is one of affluent or middle class young Bohemians who reside in gentrifying neighborhoods, broadly associated with indie and alternative music, a varied non-mainstream fashion sensibility (including vintage and thrift store-bought clothes), generally progressive political views, organic and artisanal foods and alternative lifestyles.

It is basically smart underachievers who rejected the rat race. The same rat race that their parents took part in.

Beatniks, then. Except they're not playing bongos or sipping espresso at coffee shops while someone recites poetry.

I wonder if the man-bun is a conscious echo of the samurai look? (just do an image search for "samurai hair")

Found this at wiki's article on "hip"

Hey you know there's a lot of talk going around about this hip and hep jive. Lots of people are going around saying "hip." Lots of squares are coming out with "hep." Well the hipster is here to inform you what the jive is all about.

The jive is hip, don't say hep
That's a slip of the lip, let me give you a tip
Don't you ever say hep it ain't hip, NO IT AIN'T
It ain't hip to be loud and wrong
Just because you're feeling strong
You try too hard to make a hit
And every time you do you tip your mitt
It ain't hip to blow your top
The only thing you say is mop, mop, mop
Keep cool fool, like a fish in the pool
That's the golden rule at the Hipster school
You find yourself talking too much
Then you know you're off the track
That's the stuff you got to watch
Everybody wants to get into the act
It ain't hip to think you're "in there"
Just because of the zooty suit you wear
You can laugh and shout but you better watch out
Cause you don't know what it's all about, man
Man you ain't hip if you don't get hip to this hip and hep jive
Now get it now, look out
Man get hip with the hipster, YEAH! Got to do it!
be hip not hep, coz hep is not hip

so just be hip and pray you don't slip!
