The Hangover

I popped in this disc the other day to watch it again and, god this is just a fucking hilarious movie. Parts I still laugh at and much of it has to do with Zack G's "Alan" character. But, man I just laugh at this movie and it made me think about a couple things that've occurred in the wake of it.

First of all is Mel Gibson's now defunct cameo in the sequel following that Gibson grumbled how Mike Tyson (given his history in the public eye) was able to have a successful cameo and Gibson can't. Well, Tyson's cameo I saw with a degree or two of humility and even maybe a bit of self-depreciating humor. Not to mention Tyson's bad behavior is years behind him -rather than in the media just recently and is the type that also gets a lot of forgive and forget. Beating your wife, serving time/fines for it and showing a degree of "sorry" is easier to forgive than drunk rants on an entire group of people who've suffered from assholes for decades.

So ditching Gibson's cameo makes sense as his story is not even on the same bookshelf as Tyson's problems in the media.

The other thing is Zack G. (whose last name I won't even try and to spell) He's had at least two other "big" movies come out in the wake of The Hangover -where his role and humor was almost universally lauded. The first movie was one where he was helping some kid pick up a chick in a psychiatric hospital. Never saw it, but I believe his performance was fairly well reviewed.

I DID go see Due Date where he didn't have quite the same "spark" of humor he did in Hangover as Alan, despite seeming playing the same type of character and being under the helm of the same director and also having the perfect "straight man" to play off of in Robert Downey, Jr. I just think the movie wasn't well written and Zack's character was more "idiot stoner" and less "socially undeveloped simpleton." Zack had good moments in DD but just not the "spark" he had as Alan. (Though scenes where his character tries "acting" are good and I think even shows Zack's own range as an actor.)

Due Date just wasn't a well written, or directed, movie. It certainly had no casting problems.

Anyway, The Hangover remains one of my top favorite comedies of all time and Zack G. is great in it but he also has a great supporting cast he plays off of and I loved Mike Tyson's role in the movie. Can't wait for the sequel.

I don't think Mel Gibson's problem is the drinking, I have been drunk, I don't go around blaming the jews.

Mel Gibson is just a dick, drunk or not drunk, and I'm glad people in the film spoke up about it.

My wife and I must be the last two people in the world to not see this movie. Even my 65 year old mom saw it and loved it.

Hilarious movie. I can watch it over and over.

The guy in the trunk almost had me soiling myself I laughed so hard.

"He was so mean!"

I'm glad I saw I saw an R1 version, since the UK DVD has most of the naked guy in the trunk cut out. Oh, the blu-ray's uncut, and that double standard is infuriating (see also the upcoming Lethal Weapon set- 2 and 4 are hacked to pieced on DVD, but passed uncut on Blu-ray)

Ah yes, Ken Jeong. He plays "Senor Chang" on the show Community.

I don't think I have EVER seen him in something that didn't make me split my sides!

Trivia: He used to be a Doctor! He left private practice to become a comedian/actor.

In case anyone feels the need to own this hilarious film, the DVD is a mere $3.99 at Amazon this week. Blu-ray only $10. Lots of other sweet deals going on. Hooray for Black Friday.

Gibson may be a drunken bigot, but at least he's not an ear-biting rapist.

Yeah, seems kind of a weird comparison to make.

Anyway, I liked The Hangover. Comedy road-type movies are often great. The Tyson bits were the funniest parts, I think, apart from the scene where they first wake up after their big night.

I'll take an ear-biting rapist over a drunken bigot any day.

Tyson has done his time and his penance to redeem himself. Gibson was an asshole just a few weeks ago.

I had borrowed the DVD (or more accurately had the DVD borrowed at me) from my brother for months before I watched it, putting it off because I thought it was going to be the kind of mindless gross-out comedy that I just really don't enjoy. More fool me since when I did finally watch it, I was laughing me arse off almost all the way through.
Well balanced comedies are so hard to come by these days and I can't remember the last time I saw one. Tyson's cameo was hilarious, especially considering the guy isn't an actor by trade.

As for the thing with Gibson, I've thought he was a git since Braveheart. One of the most culturally insulting and wildly inaccurate films I've ever had to sit though...but that's a whole other topic. Anyway, I'm glad they showed him the door, perhaps it'll be a wakeup call...or if any of them happen to be it'll just confirm his prejudice.

So are you telling me I missed out on some extra Chinese nuuuuts?...I'll live. ;)

There's not a whole lot more nudity in the "uncut" version. It's another release where "uncut" means "stuff we took out to make our mandated theater running time but put back in for the DVD. Since we'd have to go back through the MPAA to get this movie rated again which is a timely and expensive process. So we didn't bother. Thus it's "unrated."

Unrated scenes include: more time between Doug and his future father-in-law during the fitting scene and again during the reveal of the car. Another scene during the walk-through of the villa and a bit longer scene for the "toast" (which I think actually ruings a bit of the premise of the movie), and a scene when Doug has to return the now ruined car to his FiL. There may have been a couple other little incidental scenes. Nothing too big. The only additional "nudity" or risqué bits comes from some of the additional camera pictures during the ending credits.

The scenes added to the "unrated cut" really add little to the movie as they never really pay off accept to maybe establish a couple character traits. (The scene in the villa, for example, only serves to further set-up how Stu's credit-card is watched by his wife and just how overall uptight he is. Something we learn about him anyway during the pre-day after scenes.) So you're not missing a whole lot by not seeing it.

(This is all unless, of course, another cut of the movie has came out since this movie's video release.)

Yeah, seems kind of a weird comparison to make.

I think the point is, one actually physically hurt people, and the other one shot off his mouth in an unpleasant way, but we're okay with the one who hurt people, but not so much with the one who shot off his mouth.

Kind of like how people are still having problems with Michael Vick being in the NFL, meanwhile there are players who are involved in deaths/murders of people, and that's okay.

I don't think anyone's saying it's OK that Tyson did those things, just that he's paid his debt and so that's an end to it. What Gibson did wasn't in the same league, no question. In fact I'm not sure it was even illegal but it was distasteful and showed him for the abusive bigot that he's always been and I think people are justified in not wanting to be associated with him. Indeed, from that report the only one making comparisons between Gibson and Tyson is Gibson himself.

Exactly. And as for people saying "Oh, but Tyson did his time and Gibson hasn't" - Gibson's offences aren't actually illegal or crimes. As is so often the case, being an asshole is its own punishment.

Tyson's also done his time. Both to society (by serving a jail sentence) and in the media (by showing reform and humility) also REAL time has passed since Tyson's incidents.

Gibson's just been running off at the mouth as an asshole, has done so recently and not enough time has passed for him to get him some "forgive and forget."
