The Halo Novels

I just finished reading Greg Bear's Forerunner Saga Trilogy, which showed the Forerunner-Flood War and the destruction of all life in the galaxy. It was brilliant. Well, except for the second book, which was a complete waste of time. But aside from that I was completely blown away. This wasn't some video game tie-in this was true fiction. It was tragic and beautiful and the word choices were incredible. I'm a big Halo fan, and this is by far the most interesting story in the franchise.

If you want the full truth about the Flood and the Forerunners, this is the place for it. It also mostly stars the Diadact, the Halo 4 villain. I can't recommend it enough. Except for the middle book. I think you could skip it and miss almost nothing. Complete detour from the plot.

What other Halo books are good? I read Fall of Reach and remember really liking it. I read Contact Harvest but I don't remember it. I read the Evolutions anthology and remember liking most of it.

Fall of Reach is easily my favorite of the first 6-ish books, but I have fallen off of caring about the Halo mythology deeply enough to actually read the newer novels (heard great things about the Forerunner books).

Turns out I'm not as fond of the lore if Bungie isn't crafting the world.

Personally, I liked Fall of Reach, Contact Harvest, The Cole Protocol and First Strike. I've read the first of the Forerunner series, but don't remember many of the others.
