So seeing as how it popped up in the Underrated/Overrated thread I thought I'd see just what peoples feelings were on pineapple on pizza (who knew it could be such a divisive topic!).

We don't often give much thought to where our food comes from, the stories behind its development, etc. Here's a Time article from a few years back, about the man credited with first serving pizza with pineapple on it in 1962. This was written shortly after he died: https://time.com/4814056/hawaiian-pizza-pineapple-sam-panopoulos-death

Personally, I liked Canadian Bacon & Pineapple pizza when I was a kid, but it's usually not my preference nowadays.

I'm with the folks from the other thread who don't want it on pizza, but are willing to take it off and eat it separately.

Side story: From 1989 to 1991 I worked for a chain of pizza places in the Pacific Northwest, the late, lamented Pietro's Gold Coast Pizza. (Yes, I know there are still a few around. No, there's no connection to Quicksilver.)

Having a Hawaiian-style pizza on their menu, right or wrong, they naturally had to keep a lot of big cans of pineapple on hand. Eventually whenever they'd open one and drain the juice, I learned to pour the juice into a big beverage cup, take it home, and have it for breakfast. Everyone thought it was the strangest behavior, but hey, I was a bachelor working for a low-pay pizza joint. You gotta do what you gotta do.

Does that justify the existence of the Hawaiian pizza?

I think that people who want pineapple on their pizza should have it, and the people who don't want it shouldn't have it.

...and I think that the latter group should also get over this weird obsession with controlling what other people eat. ;)

spoken like a shill from the industrial pineapple industry. today it's pizza. tomorrow it will be our pimento cheese sandwiches and god forbid, if this goes on solitary sponges will be living in the damned things.

I only like pineapple with the sharpness offset by other flavors, and there's not enough on pizza. Citrus and starchy don't mix, I don't like it when they put orange pieces in pasta either.

Not on any pizza, just those pies with toppings like ham or Canadian bacon which are a complement to the pineapple. Then it's YUM!

I like pineapple where nature intended it, on the top of pineapple upsidedown cake

Yes! Someone gets it! If you want me to do fruits and veggies, serve up my pizza with extra sauce, onions, mushrooms, spinach, peppers, and (fresh) tomatoes. Then follow it up with that most glorious dessert. Cherry pie will also work.
