The Great Martian War 1913 -1917.

Feels like a lot of you are missing the point. This wasn't a retelling of War of the Worlds with World War I as the setting. This was a retelling of World War I, with an alien invasion as the setting. With a twist ending that gives the whole thing a more potent meaning than "cool mockumentary".

*Shrug* Just a tiny detail that isn't really worth arguing about in my opinion. Because either way you look at it, it was at least heavily inspired by it. And either way, it's really well done.

Where were the Russians? Further, why did the "Martians" only have one front?

I mean, it's like this. The "Martians" land in Germany (nice use of what I think was footage from the Tunguska impact) and march toward France. What's happening behind them? The whole Russian and Ottoman empires were completely ignored, along with Poland, Rumania and those portions of Eastern Europe to the east of the landing zone. Surely there would have been a second front.

Very enjoyable movie. Thanks for mentioning it. I don't have cable so never knew it was on.

Hmmm, good point. Maybe they're saving that for a sequel.

Yeah, I thought about this, and also about what the mass amounts of infantry were even doing... Were they just committing suicide? lol

I had to think about that, too. The tripods had shields, yet humanity waged a 4 year war against them and had victories (some victories purposely rigged by the invaders). The shields must still have been able to be weakened by conventional weapons.

I kept waiting for giant tripwires to be used against the tripods.

"Biopic" indicates a factual biography of a rel person. I do not think it means what you think it menas. :)

It's nice the UK gets cool stuff like this while we in the US get UFO specials and series about rednecks doing stupid shit. :klingon:

I can see how they could be pushed back with artillery, but not sure what exactly the charging riflemen were doing.

Getting killed mostly.

Back on sailing ships, centuries ago, Pirates used to fasten chains between cannon balls.

That way two balls, joint together by a couple meters of chain could cleave a mast off a ship, which is much better than putting a hole in the side and watching all the treasure sink.

It would have made more sense if they'd explained that a walkers shields would eventually short out after they're hit with enough bullets. As it was, infantry charges against an enemy that can deflect artillery shells is just moronic.

Hell even in WotW's the humans got in a couple of lucky shots.

Despite some quibbles though, I thought it was a fascinating story. Wouldn't mind seeing a companion book of some kind that goes more into war stories, tactics, weapons systems, etc.

I've just finished watching it. That was very cool! A quite imaginative and resourceful way to tell a story. And the twist(s) at the end is interesting.

Again, I found this more imaginative than a lot of big budget and cgi laden sci-fi films. Very creative. :techman:

Sounds good. I'm sure History Channel here will show it eventually. Maybe I'll send them an inquiry. I'm a little afraid they may wait until Halloween.

Agreed. I thought it was refreshingly creative. Btw, the observatory they used as a stand-in for the British observatory is actually the David Dunlap Observatory in Toronto.
